Pewdiepie's letsplay series hit the reboot button and then a combination of Lore based SMPs, 100 days videos, and manhunts kept it afloat until around now where it's still popular enough to stay mainstream but has calmed down now. Still way more popular than the Dark Ages which was like 2015-2018.

Minecraft was really popular from 2009-2012, but then Minecraft had several small updates that no one really liked, and Minecraft lost popularity and was looked at as a kid’s game. 5 years later, in 2017, Philza, a streamer, died in his 5-year old hardcore world, and Pewdiepie started his let’s play series, which gave Minecraft popularity again. Minecraft started to introduce better updates, such as the ocean, nether, and Caves & Cliffs.
PewDiePie’s series revived Minecraft. Also 1.14 Villager & Pillager update helped cuz it changed the look of the game.

Minecraft became popular during the Covid Pandemic with rise of more and more youtubers like Dream and Camman18. It was a way to contact literally anyone in any language. Multiplayer servers allowed microphone chats and mutliplayer chatting to one specific person using the /whisper command. Since then, many youtubers have seen this as a way to get views. Fast.
