2016 Fiat 500X Trekking - Redline: Review

- Take everything you love about the 500 hatchback and add more space, a nicer cabin, available AWD, and a higher seating position and what you have is essentially the perfect vehicle for the SUV hungry US market. Buyers wanting a small SUV with an Italian name should look no further, but remember that some more mainstream players offer better refinement and practically, while also being less fun.
I have it and I am extremely happy with it.
I am Italian, living in Toronto.
If you buy a Fiat, you do it for its character and design.
Dude, don't compare a Fiat against a Mazda.... Don't say blasphemies!
FIAT 500x, I adore you!
We have on too
It’s lit
I had a 500L and CRIED LIKE A BITCH when I gave it back off lease.
Andrea De Paola tell more about your 500X ?please please
Tell me how you feel about it in 6 years.
Fiat is still one my favorite car brands.
I have a 2018 500X Lounge - have 44,000 with nothing but tune ups - and basic maintenance - finally considering some new tires. Really love the car. - Wish I had the AWD but I don't - I can live with the FWD and the Chrysler made Trans - works fine for me. I frequent several outdoor gun ranges which are all combinations of gravel - dirt - grass you name it... Works just fine.
Dude what are u expecting power like a Mustang.... is a 4 cylinder bro
I've had my 500x for exactly a year now, and I love it. But I would not get anything above the Pop trim. The turbo engine with the six-speed is just amazing compared to the horrible automatic that is also in the Jeep. If you're worried about snow, then just get snow tires- they work better than all-wheel drive anyway.
Regarding reliability: all I can say is my experience has been very good. I put 80,000 miles on the smaller '12 500 in 5 years and only had minor problems that were my own fault. The 500x over the past year has had no problems at all.
Leighton Mann
Just no.
Leighton Mann , you will love the 9 speed. It is actually a manual transmission with an automatic clutch. Learn to use the manual mode and you'll have the greatest driving fun.
I have heard that the auto has been reworked and shifts much better now, though personally I like to row my own and control where the turbo is in the shifts.
Thanks for this comment , the fiat community needs stories like this ❤️
Besides the clearly erroneous details in the review (see comments below for examples, one that stood out was the comment that Fiat 500 car doesn't have back seat--it absolutely does), I think the review was great visually--but it was misleading and clearly, he has a bias (comments like "the clearly cheap start-stop button--who says that it is a button!) if not is misinformed on some more technical details about the Fiat 500x specifically. I encourage prospective buyers to test it out and or watch other reviews. At times I was not sure what he was reviewing it for, the typical American road and use or a European raceway. This is a very fun car and be prepared to have people say "wow" when they enter or see you driving by.
I owned a Juke for 4 years and I hated the turbo lag on takeoff. Just got the 2016 500x Trekking and I like the takeoff a lot more. Haven't had to really nail it to get around traffic yet. I will say it is a lot more enjoyable to drive with the seats that don't hold you in, the less noise in the cabin and the suspension isn't as stiff.
Fiat's have always been a great driving car, with a ton of functional style. Reviewer is misunderstanding the multi-air engine and how the shift program is designed for reduced energy use. Needs to improve technical knowledge.
Your video review of this car is probably the most viewed of any on the topic. Good job.
Love the X...and the FCA brand!
Why am I enjoying the sound of that engine? I think it's funny just to listen to it.
It sounds like it's in pain.
DRJGD666 Poor engine. I shouldn't enjoy the sound but I'm sorry.
He's so right when he said it reminds him of the four cylinder engines for a decade ago. This engine and transmission are trash, if FCA doesn't do something soon they will lose customers
Andrew DeLorenzo Agreed. I can't imagine anyone want to hear this engine.
Andrew DeLorenzo it's not a race car. The 9 speed has been worked out pretty well, and I had it in the 2015 200S AWD and. Ever gave me a problem once it was flashed it was shifting a little hard in beginning when brand new. The engine was picking up fast there for what the car was
I really don't understand why everybody in the US prefers the slower 2.4 n/a engine.
The 1.4 turbo is a lot more lively either with manual or auto transmission (a DCT in fact).
It has more torque and of course a lot sooner due to the turbo, making it a lot more fun and easy going than that 2.4.
The 1.4 has also better mileage if you don't keep pushing it too hard..
You even call the 2.4 the "beefier" engine, although it only offers more power than the 1.4 above 5500 rpms or so.
On normal driving conditions (let's say between 1300 rpm and 4000 rpm, the 1.4 offers always more power for less fuel.
I just don't get the US market.
sadly, the 1.4t is only available with FWD, and the manual transmission, in the base model of this car, in the US anyways.
I'm owner of 500x trekking plus great small crossover! one small problem= the transmission ...but i love this car so much!
180hp/175lbs ft of torque. about 2900lbs AWD. 0-60 around 10secs. 0-60 should be around 7.5 and less.
Considering my Civic weighs the same amount and does 0-60 in 6.5-7 seconds I agree completely. My civic has 174hp/162ft lbs of torque.
0-60 is 7.8 seconds. This reviewer is an idiot.
www.caranddriver.com/fiat/500x
Michael Brown did you read it clearly? cause car and driver said that for the 1.4 turbo and manual not the 2.4 and 9 speed
Michael Earll even Edmonds says that is incorrect. They have the 2.4 at 9 seconds. No one who knows what they're talking about regarding cars says this thing is a 10+ car.
www.edmunds.com/fiat/500x/2016/road-test-specs/
JStream PC it's nowhere near 10 seconds. I have seen them on UA-cam around 7.5-8 this guy trashes fca products.
I think he was Expecting Honda Civic Type R Power I Know, I Know the Engine sounds like it's in the pain but at the Same time I like the sound of it Ik I'm Just Pitiful aren't I. Lemme know what you think.
Me too
This guy calls every Fiat "cute". They have character compared to most U.S Market vehicles.
Nash Gover they are similar to Jeep Renegade.
Alpzepta yeah. Are they any good? I’ve always wanted one.
Nash Gover well, it’s got fiat engine so they will be very unreliable. Actually Jeep Renegade used Fiat 500X body and give them a different look. Notice the Chime are also similar too.
If you want a real jeep then get a wrangler for a cute size and Grand Cherokee for Full-Size beast! These two are probably more reliable than Renegade because they used more Chrysler part than fiat.
I prefer the old XJ Cherokee with AMC 4.0 V6 I don’t care about V8 that’s much.
Alpzepta true. The 4.0 is bullet proof
@@alpzepta Fiat engines are not unreliable never have been.
I'm thinking I consider this as my first vehicle.
Did you end up getting it, if u did how has it held up? I’m thinking of getting one too :)
Drove the 500X as a rental the other day from Stuttgart to Munich.
It had the 1.4 Turbo and the Manual. I bet you the turbo engine is the better pick !
More midrange torque to cruise this thing: 230 for the 1.4 vs 175 from the 2.4 (it's not sporty no matter how much displacement you put in there). Also the engine was very quiet and refined. This 2.4 engine sounds like someones grinding next to your ear. I dont know if they dont offer that in the US but regarding to a test of the german adac you can get the 1.4 with a dual clutch transmission. The manual had a launch assist for the clutch so you almost can't choke it. Was a funny car but not my kind of taste.
oh should have watched the video further before commenting. Typical mistake xD
DxCBuG what country? u said manual and rental, so I'm guessing not the states
DxCBuG
Speaking of small crossovers, can you do a review of the QX30 by infiniti?
Hopefully soon! Be sure to keep checking our social networks for all the latest press cars we're testing :)
Redline Reviews hey bae
From MY perspective ( as a vintage FIAT & Alfa owner over the years... ) the Italian charm, personality and design make up for the ( slightly ) slow driving experience and coarse engine note. The Alfa Romeo Giulia just won Car of The Year over at Motor Trend. The Italians are back and they are taking BMW's lunch money...... ;)
1970borntorun Italian are back long time ago with Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini.
U don't buy these cars for quick acceleration..
You don't need to press the lock button.....that's why it's being "finicky" for you

😂this man crying about it being slow its only 170hp
I drive a slower car 😂😂😂
Look you buy a fiat because you enjoy being different not sexy not intimidating just different. You also buy a fiat because you don’t need the car to represent you or your status. Its a means of getting you from here to there and when you are done you can find your car in the sea of Japanese and ford and chevy vehicles which all look alike. You also like to have a good relationship with the local dealer/repair shop because you will spend a lot of time there. I bought a new 1984 fiat spider 2000 and it was showing rust within 8 months i went back to the dealer and they had left the states. The spider 2000 0-60 time should have been listed as why bother the interior was cheap the thing ran ok somethings will break. like i said you will know your repair people. But i would love to have one again. It was fun not because of performance but because of its fun nature. The 500 is the same. its fun,its simple, its simply fun.
Sofyan, your reviews are awesome!
Your Videos are amazing bro. Keep up the great work, love this channel!
Your reviews of coupes and performance sedans are right on. I'm afraid that your performance bent has blinded you on this one. Its a much better vehicle than this review would lead one to believe. Oh you can hear the engine...oh my.
Maximum screen resolution of this video is only 360p! Super grainy and washout look! Retro back to 1950s screen resolution of around broadcast 480i! viewing from cheapest black and white CRT set.
HW2800 that happens sometimes if you are early.. mine was only 360p, waited 10 mins and it's 1080p
Great review, Sofyan! The Fiat 500x sure seems like a neat little vehicle, but I do have admit that engine sounded like it wanted you to stop driving it. The 500x's engine just seems to noisy and intrudes into the cabin quite a bit.
Putting that all to the side though, the interior of the 500x looks fairly attractive. I like their use of more exotic looking materials, as oppose to the competitions black plastic norm (with a few vehicle exceptions). Also, while the exterior styling is definitely subjective, it has some pretty nice proportions, and is easily recognizable as a Fiat.
All in all, the Fiat 500x is for the person who wants to stand out from the sea of very similar looking vehicles. Not to mention, this vehicle offering AWD, is definitely going to bring in more buyers from the colder climates, too. Great review! Keep up the great work, Sofyan!

"The Quest To Record The Best!"
Do you think you will review a Jeep Grand Cherokee? Or an Subaru Outback?
What song is this. Thank you in advance.
The new 2019 and 2020 1.3 turbo with 35% more torque is a hoot! 210 lb/ft of torque at just 2200 RPM....just what you asked for in your review. THree less HP than the old 2.4 engine, but 59 lb/ft more torque. Try one!
What does sensationable mean?
insatiable
12:47 i can hear some pretty annoying idle vibration
Would you consider doing a review of the manual transmission of this car? It seems to be one of the few manual suvs left that isn't a Jeep (not that there's anything wrong with Jeeps).
What song is this. I'm dying to find out.
11:05 It sounds like you're hurting it. Poor lil' guy...
It sounds identical to the Golf on Nfs Underground
they should just make the 1.4 turbo standard and drop this. you would think a 2.4 with 180 is good but the fiat Chrysler engines are not good. and is the trekking a rip off version of the trailhawk?
Technically the 2.4 is not a fiat engine really it's a global thing, built in the states I think block was hyundai. Fiats own engines are good. The 1.3 turbo diesel was a great engine the old 1.9 td was unkillable and the 2.0l td is also great, not the best on fuel but a good engine.
Are these reliable?
Manny Garcia Mine has been great so far! I adore it!
Don’t buy one if you value your money.
Yes
Wow my sister is nuts now she wants to look and test drive this thing.
While I am very supportive of FCA styling, their smaller engines are generally thrashy disappointments. Your comments are exactly what I have felt. Fiat has historically relied on smaller engines that are high revving. This plays well in Europe, but doesn't work in the land of low-end torque and stump-pulling horsepower. If Fiat could learn this, they would be a much stronger player in this market. It merits note that Chrysler historically has always been at the head of the class with horsepower and torque (until the 1980's). However both marques share one thing...disgusting quality. Reliability has always been lacking in Chrysler and Fiat cars. Too bad, because now they have styling that is head of the class.
riverexplorer, we only get low end torque with turbos, compressors or electricity. Not with displacement (unless we're talking 4000cc or more).
Any turbo engine driver will tell you that N/A engines are slow, precisely because they lack low end torque.. I don't understand why the US market is so keen o N/A engines, they need to be bigger, they need more fuel and in the end they offer less power where it counts.
Also, amongst FCA smaller engines, we find some 'Engine of the Year' models like the 900cc twinair and 1.4 multiair engines, which seems a bit different than your idea of "generally thrashy disappointments"
And I don't know about Chrysler, but you only hear about Fiat lack of reliability from people that don't own nor drive Fiat cars.
Thank you for the attempt to explain. But really bad turbo lag is something from the last century.
But even with lag, overall they provide a lot better acceleration. It's there, it's measurable, it's easy to experience. The sooner the torque, the sooner the available power.
What's really the point to complain about turbolag? Isn't that related of how fast it goes when we want? You just have to try one and the other. I really don't understand. It's night and day.
Maybe I misunderstand you, but injectors don't play any cooler role (not outside competition anyway). Maybe except for US, but manufacturers do compete for mileage for the past 20 years or more.
One thing is true though. Engines with at least one turbo are more expensive to build, so manufacturers prefer N/A to get better profit margins. Customers only look for the peak power figure like in this very same exercise. Common buyers don't examine torque curves, although they could easily feel the difference if at least they would try them.
I found a POP with the 1.4 turbo 6 speed and it is far superior. Full second faster 0-60 over the 2.4 with automatic. Love the turbo and many abarth upgrades work.
You complained a lot about low end torque, the transmission, the engine, and the poor fuel economy........but it comes in a 6 speed manual transmission which should solve those problems. You should’ve reviewed the manual transmission
that 9 speed makes cvt look awesome
Umm, no. But thanks for playing! lol
The nine speed is silky smooth. The cvt, of which there are many is not good, I have a 500x 2l diesel auto lovely car NO problems I also have a suzuki swift petrol cvt it's OK but just not a gearbox at all.
This needs the 8-speed Aisin auto and a turbo-4.
You mean that horrible one that’s in the new camrys and rav4’s ? Hells no
What is the redline on it?
6500
@@kilovwdude6457 You think?🤨
I agree that the engine sounds terrible. It's noisier than the 2.2 in my Cobalt, which is 10 years old.
Noisier than my old 2007 Hyundai Accent which was a 1.6L NA lol.
That transmission is horrible. Why does FCA still use it? They've had a multitude of issues with it and they seem determined to keep putting it in cars.
It's weird really, the ZF 8 speed that they use in other cars is brilliant
@@carsaregood911 the 9 is also ZF. I've had no problems with mine.
Horrible review. Stop comparing it to the 500. It's a different car. Automotive "journalists" like you were so hard on this because it isn't the typical box you're used to while expecting Ferrari performance. You all want americans to drive perfect boring boxes while all interesting cars die.
It does have 500 on its name so...
Leather looks “King Ranchish”???
shall we?
All Fiat needs to do is get rid of that 9 speed! With a good 8 speed I'm sure the 0-60 would drop to around 7 seconds, and I'm sure it would be more enjoyable to drive. As far as reliability, I'm not sure what problems others are having, but I haven't had one problem with my 500 cabrio. It's not my daily driver though.
I have the 2l diesel with 9 speed. Absolutely love it, can't fault it.
Just say it!!! Toyota pays your salary. Sales must be lacking. For a reason. Fiat is soooo much better.
The wife and i have been looking for a new driver for her and she loved the look of the fiat but we tested out the hrv also and i will never understand the love it gets after i test drive it.. It was just cheap and gross. Honda is losing it, but they gotta pay for the great reviews because personally i don't see it. And don't get me started on the rav4. Same thing. Sluggish and rough ride. I did not care for it. Toyota is going to be in the same boat with Honda soon.
You must be brain dead to buy a fiat.
@@wade1359 HRV is a bad CUV bottom line and you're also paying for the "Honda" badge.
The 500x came out in 2016 not 2011 Fiat didn't return to the states until 2012
Isn't Fiat's reliability the worst in the business? I feel like you'd have to have a lot of expendable money to decide that this SUV is a smarter decision than most others unfortunately .
That's my concern as well. FCA vehicles have some very comparable vehicles but the reliability is a pain in the ass
They're no Toyota or Honda but the newer Fiat models are fairly reliable. I think the brand gets a bad rep from its older models from the 70s and 80s that would break down very often .
Fix It Again Tony
I‘ve seen better Italian car with Alfa Romeo. Especially the Brera and Stevio are cool.
GTV Busso V6 are Great too. Just don’t see too many of them in America.
I swear I read "Fiat 200X Twerking"
Buy the POP 4cyl turbo manual with more power fuel economy Do not buy the one this guy talks about it's slow speed jerky automatic
the engine sounds terrible, i guess there is a reason why these car are so cheap after a year, or even new dealers are marking them wayyyy down. my 12 500 1.4 dosnt make this racket.
'it didn't always work' ahh, gotta love Fiat!
this is the jeep renegade
oh Fiat...it doesn't speak well for your reputation when eve the key suck, come on guys, I'm rooting for you and especially Alfa to do well!
Liked the video, another amazing review! But hate the car, I like the styling but the engine/transmission is just terrible
The Fiat brand would be great if they would dump the "nostalgic" look and have a new design language, and dump these crappy corporate FCA drivetrains, and use the WAY better Alfa drivetrains. They may be more expensive, but will be much more fun.
But it wouldn’t have had any of the features he liked.

Why does it feel like soybean is talking down to us as we are watching him? 🤨🤔
This guy is a really horrible reviewer. He gives too much of his personal opinion; which is absolutely irrelevant.

"America has a "sensationable" appetite for crossovers". "Sensationable"? Really? Sometimes you make me laugh. Try insatiable... You may want to test drive a dictionary every now and then. Sensationable... lol

Shut up
thank tell the truth
Only slightly better looking than one of the ugliest cars on the road, the Fiat 500L.
Absolutely hate this car horrible interior falls apart and feels horrible seats are horrendous for long trips
The 9 speed transmission is the worst auto in recent memory for me
Fiat/Chrysler JUNK. Run far away
suzigti92 is a hater in a Hyundai. bwahahaa
I'm knowledgeable. Unlike some people. Never owned a Hyundai but would take one over a Chrysler product anyday.
suzigti92 that's a cute and "safe" statement. But, you don't own an Italian car because Consumer Reports or your mommy tell you that it's proper and practical.
Owning and driving an Italian car comes from passion. You either "get it"... or you opt for what your neighbor (and everyone else on your block) has.
A suzuki fan are you.
a great review for a shit car, :p
32K for this pile. Fiat reliability is horrible.
Ivan Vojt is probably an econobox Honda fan boy.
Not to be rude but fiat cars are down right ugly and extremely unreliable. If Italy is so good at making art like the Mona Lisa, than this sure isn’t a masterpiece.
What a terrible shit box
