    Excellent instruction/information, the walk straight and adjust 1 board left for a 2 board variance down the lane really gave me clarity. Thank you.

    You make a killer point about trying to go up the boards. My dad watches me practice up the boards all the time and doesn't understand how I'm able to stand in the left gutter and still get my ball to go up the 5 board. My rule of 7 is a rule of 5, but I line up with my slide foot, so it looks like I'm standing in the gutter.
    Another point to mention is thinking of a railroad track. If you look down a track, the rails appear to come together in the distance, and due to that, distance perceived is shorter. When people try to hit a mark 40' down a lane, they think the mark is a lot closer, therefore they have to angle it to that mark more than they actually do. Even when sliding on 30, my ball still goes pretty damn straight to hit the 10 board or so down lane, even though it looks like I have to throw it really far out to get it there.

    • @stephenrodwell3164
      @stephenrodwell3164 5 років тому +1

      Charlie Odom the reason you use 5 is because of your drift during approach, 2 boards left drift 2+5=7. The reason it is called the rule of 7 is because the distance between the centre line on the ball and the inside of the slide foot is 7 boards. All bowlers have a personal number and can work it out. There is a formula to calculate all shots using this rule.

    • @charlieodom9107
      @charlieodom9107 5 років тому

      @@stephenrodwell3164 wrong....I don't drift. The reason has to do with 3 things: The spot I pick on my foot to line up with, how close I release the ball to my ankle, and the angle I am bent over at the foul line.
      Since I line up with the inside of my foot, and the ball passes within MM of my ankle. It is only 5 boards.
      The board I line up with on my approach is the exact spot I slide, within MM. The only exception is when I shoot corner pins. I deliberately walk to my target.

    • @kylemoore7866
      @kylemoore7866 5 років тому

      Charlie Odom good point. As the ball goes 40 foot it only went right 20 inches. Or not even if sliding on 30 the ball probably laid down on 23-25 on really ball only travels right 15”

I am a rocket scientist (retired now) math angles are my thing and I knew it had to apply here. Your tips increased my score by 26 pins after using it for a month. House scores around 195- 225. was at 176!

    Just came across this video. Great information. I have always identified my start point with my feet using the outside of my right foot as a right handed bowler. Turns out that by sheer coincidence this works perfectly for the rule of 7 because if I start on 10 my left foot is sliding about 17. Sometimes our quirks work out! Thanks!

    This video REALLY helped me improve my game!!! My angle is actually 5, so I call it: ' Rule of 5'. If I want to go play the ball down on the 10 board, I stand on the 15 board, on the approach. Great video JR!!!

    Thanks soooooo much for doing this video. It will be a game changer for me. I've always drifted right when shooting at 2nd arrow from right and pull it left normally missing my mark. I found last weekend if I want to hit the 2nd arrow from right, I walk down looking at 3rd arrow from right which actually helped me to walk much more straight for once and then at last moment I try to roll over the 2nd arrow. Seemed to help. But this explanation might help me pin point the idea even more. Thank you.

    I find this “walk straight” technique is too hard for me. I have more success walking toward the arrow that I aim for. However, your point of figuring out how many boards the ball is from my slide foot makes sense. Thanks!

    JR, you are on the short list of advice channels I recommend to others if I can't explain something right.. you do have a tendency of getting technical which can throw off newer bowlers.. but between your other videos and some other channels it usually gets cleared up and makes sense.
    Keep up the good work!

    Nice. The only thing I didn’t hear was what reference point on your shoes you use, and from the graphic it looks like you’re using the center of the left shoe. I use the inside edge of my left shoe, as I find that more accurate.

      Al Farrow - agreed

    • @DGV_Tips
      @DGV_Tips 5 років тому

      Douglas Wobbema same...use the inside edge of the widest part, near the base of the big toe...allows me to at least start in precisely the same place on the “x axis”, and then I use the “toe edge” for “y axis” alignment. Now, what happens afterwards...well, I’m human!

    • @TheVlad1616
      @TheVlad1616 5 років тому

      Al Farrow it doesn’t matter really. If you use inside of slide foot, like I do, then your # will likely be 5 or so (since your reference point is slightly right of where 7 is calculated from). It is the same concept though. You need to determine where you’re sliding to be able to throw straight up 10, 5, wherever. Then you’ll know how far right your lay down is based on your slide - whatever point you use as a reference.

    • @DGV_Tips
      @DGV_Tips 5 років тому

      TheVlad1616 Yes, it’s all about a consistent reference point...my “point” was that the edge of the shoe is more accurate than the middle of the front of the shoe.

    • @KenClay
      @KenClay 5 років тому +2

      He says 7 from center of face to shoulder. Your left (or right) toe is not in line with the center of your face. The inside edge of your shoe where the big toe connects to your foot is in line with the center of your face (sternum,body,etc). If you use a different part of your shoe than that, then your number will be less than or greater than the distance from body center to shoulder.
      Also, some people have very narrow bodies (7).

    Great information JR. Seeing what board the ball is rolling on at the break point is difficult for me without a camera to record that board. With a ball speed of 15 mph, the ball is traveling at 22ft/sec and that means when I look up to see the board from my 15' target, the ball is actually hitting the pins. On the other hand, if look at the intended target down lane, I can see that board more accurately as the ball approaches. This knowledge of angles is great. In all my years of bowling, I have never heard anyone address the target set up system as you have. Just an FYI..... lane is 60 feet from foul line to head pin, ball speed is 15 mph, ball time to travel the 60 feet is 2.7 seconds.

    I wonder if any smart people out there could make an Excel sheet that calculates it automatically. Like where you enter your desired spot at the arrows, breakpoint and your drift (left or right) and it spits out a starting point.
    For those of us that drift a bit but have to play bigger angles because of our rev rate, it gets tricky. Drifting 4 left with a 500 rev rate when you wanna play 20 to 7 gets tricky for me ha

      Jeffrey Pelletier the leading cause of misses inside of target is late timing. When the timing is late the body tries to compensate by pulling down from the top of the swing. Easiest fix, start the ball a second sooner or find a coach familiar with the Mark Baker system of timing to assist in correcting it.

    I ‘ve never understood how you can stand at say the 22nd board swing the ball straight back and walk to the foul line and release it and hits say the 5th board. When I do it the ball goes straight down the lane to the pins. It follows a path parallel to the sides of the lane. some people have said to square your feet, hips and shoulders to the arrow that is your mark. If you do this, you will walk at an angle to the foul line. When I watch other bowlers, they appear to square up with the foul line but the ball goes toward the gutter and hooks back to the pocket. I’ve always heard “move to the left and aim at the same mark.” I’ve never had anyone explain how to do that. They always say “you just do and it works every time”. It would be nice if you could help me understand. Thanks in advance for you help. Bob

    So if i release my ball at my ankle which is say 3 boards instead of the 7, and i can ride 10 board all the way down does that mean i only need to stand 13 with my slide foot if i understand correctly?

    • @TheVlad1616

      Tony Barber yes, exactly right. To find your number this is exactly what you need to do. Find out what board you slide on to throw it straight up the lane.

    • @stephenrodwell3164
      @stephenrodwell3164 5 років тому

      Tony Barber under the Ritger training system the distance is calculated to the centre of the ball. If you place the ball on the lane and you slide foot next to it with a small clearance you can count the boards. Other training systems use other systems but coaches trained under Ritger will use this as the basis for calculations. If your release point is wider you can still use that release point to calculate your lines and angles.

    Im currently struggling with head pin spares. I am trying to line up on the left to knock the head into the ten and out of trying to hook past the head pin. Maybe this video is what I need to really think about,or do you have more tips? I always manage to miss left and completely miss the head pin when trying this. Thanks.

    For decades I have had a 3 board drift right. I have included it in my approaches. I did read an article that suggested drifters take the first step in front of the left foot for 4 step. It works because I start 3 boards left. What do you think of this?

    with the modern balls it is not necessary to walk the steps, just standing at the fowl line I can strike. why not? put some revs on the ball and just stand at foul line and shoot. how hard is it to roll 12 miles an hour?

    i have a question, i tend to release the ball a lil above the ankle and i usually dont roll in directly on the lanes, more throwing it (def louder sounds than the pros that seem to roll it) i just started taking bowling very serious and am averaging about 220...What would be effect of rolling ball and releasing at ankle, instead of releasing higher and seeming to "throw"it more..if you go to my page, you will see me bowling..any advice would help..

      @@Tenpindoctors You may need a video in regards to that. For instance, if I am targeting 8 at the arrows but playing 5 at the breakpoint do I stand 15 and adjust my feet left until I hit that break point? I am sure many of us would appreciate if you were to delve into this.

    • @jordanwiththeuselesscokeca69
      @jordanwiththeuselesscokeca69 5 років тому

      What he's saying is that if you want to play straight up 10, you stand on 15-18 (depending on your walk) and walk straight with a straight backswing, and with every board left of 17, hitting the same mark, 10, the ball goes out 2 boards farther. I think I got that correct, but that's the gist of it.

    • @williamfreitas7016
      @williamfreitas7016 5 років тому

      Upnet at 17 you’re playing straight so your slide foot should be straight.
      When you open up the angle of the slide foot is actually minute.

    • @epiphoney
      @epiphoney 4 роки тому

      Bowling beyond the basics has an appendix on the math. For right handed and 3rd arrow he has these boards to put the ball on at the foul line. He says to walk straight but turn your feet and body towards the target. Stand about 6 boards to the left. Not exactly a 3-6-9 system.
