I also heard that 7 were for the number of waves that come in together in a set (I visited Nazaré with my Portuguese teacher and she is the one who told me that). I am looking forward to visiting again. We drove from Atouguia so didn't do the funicular but I'd love to try it. The views from Sitio are amazing! I was very fortunate to visit in February and see some massive waves, at sunset. I even have footage of the giant waves hitting the rocks below the lighthouse, from the beach in Nazaré and it looks amazing. It was a special visit... quiet, as it was February, but a day forever etched in to my memory! This was a really beautiful video Miguel, Obrigada ~
It was a beautiful day, albeit a bit cold when I started recording. 😀 Yes, the 7 waves is one of the "explanations" for the tradition, as well as the 7 colors of the rainbow, the 7 days of the week, and various religious traditions that include the number 7. The last time I saw the giant waves was in March 2020, just a few days before the first covid lockdown. It was my last road trip for a long time... I took incredible photos, it was during the Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, so the waves were about 20-25 meters high, and there were huge crowds near the lighthouse. Have a great week, Jen! 😊

É estranho que outros vídeos não mencionem Fuas Roupinho e a lenda da Nazaré, sem ela toda a história da Nazaré e até o seu nome teria sido completamente diferente. Todas as cidades portuguesas têm as suas lendas, mais ou menos verdadeiras, mais ou menos importantes, mas esta realmente influenciou todo o desenvolvimento futuro da localidade. 😊 Aquela sirene deve ter sido alguma fábrica... Ou isso ou a Rússia resolveu atacar Portugal. 😅 Eu quase fui a Nazaré no inverno em várias ocasiões, mas em todas elas havia chuva, e eu queria gravar num bonito dia de sol. Nazare is a gorgeous place. My family and I had the good fortune of visiting Nazare, albeit not when it was beach weather, but in December 2012, apparently about six months before surfer McNamara broke his own wave-riding record. We enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch accompanied by a tasty bottle of “vinho verde” at the Ribamar Restaurant, which faces the beach and is located adjacent (just south) of the Mar Bravo Restaurant. The building that houses the Ribamar is visible at minute 28:52 of the video, just to the right of the white Mar Bravo Restaurant building. A driver from Lisbon took us - first to Fatima, then to Batalha (where you took us on March 29, 2022), then to Nazare, and then to Obidos, before taking us back to Lisbon. He explained to us the reason behind the Batalha Cathedral being built and related a little bit of the history of Obidos, but did not mention the Fuas Roupinho, Legend of Nazare story. He simply described Nazare as “a nice fishing village where we could have lunch”. Unfortunately, we did not have time to take the funicular ride up to Sitio and take in the beautiful views, so thank you, Miguel, for taking us there.
Nazaré is one of the best places in Portugal to enjoy a delicious seafood meal, along with Setúbal and Peniche. 😋 I find it disappointing that nowadays so few Portuguese people know the Legend of Nazaré. 100 years ago most people probably knew it. This Saturday I will return to the Fátima-Batalha region, for a very special video (in a town other than those two), recorded at night. It will be published the following week, if all goes well. Next time you should also visit Pederneira, located on a hill on the other side. Pederneira has two beautiful churches and a viewing area where you have great views of the main town and the beach below. It was the original village where the fishermen lived. Up to the 17th. century Pederneira was on a large lagoon that slowly closed by sediment. When the fishermen went to sea the women worked the fertile lands for extra income. In fact the women often earned more than the men and even now they are often the main breadwinners. If you spend some time in Nazare and observe you will see that women always seem busy, spend time in groups chatting loudly and generally look more energetic, whereas the men are often laid back and don't appear to be as dominant or busy.
Yes, visiting Pederneira was in my initial plans, but it would have been such a long walk that I had to change the itinerary. 😅 But when I return to film the big waves I will try to include Pederneira. Ah, I didn't know that up to the 17th century that area was a large lagoon! A similar story to Aveiro.
@@POVTours I am not too sure but I think that the Aveiro Lagoon is still there and in good condition. I think that a good example is the Obidos lagoon which would have closed by now but to keep it going the authorities constantly do digging work to keep it open to the sea.
Ah, I've been wondering when there would be an episode about Nazaré. Thank you very much! I wonder if that church (or chapel) at 26 min is Santo António, built in 1861.
I was waiting for a beautiful sunny day with giant waves, but that never happened last winter, it was always cloudy and rainy on those days. 😅 Santo António is indeed one of the possible names, but I found at least two other names, and I have no idea which one is real... 🤔

Nazare is a gorgeous place. My family and I had the good fortune of visiting Nazare, albeit not when it was beach weather, but in December 2012, apparently about six months before surfer McNamara broke his own wave-riding record.
We enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch accompanied by a tasty bottle of “vinho verde” at the Ribamar Restaurant, which faces the beach and is located adjacent (just south) of the Mar Bravo Restaurant. The building that houses the Ribamar is visible at minute 28:52 of the video, just to the right of the white Mar Bravo Restaurant building.
A driver from Lisbon took us - first to Fatima, then to Batalha (where you took us on March 29, 2022), then to Nazare, and then to Obidos, before taking us back to Lisbon. He explained to us the reason behind the Batalha Cathedral being built and related a little bit of the history of Obidos, but did not mention the Fuas Roupinho, Legend of Nazare story. He simply described Nazare as “a nice fishing village where we could have lunch”. Unfortunately, we did not have time to take the funicular ride up to Sitio and take in the beautiful views, so thank you, Miguel, for taking us there.
Nazaré is one of the best places in Portugal to enjoy a delicious seafood meal, along with Setúbal and Peniche. 😋
I find it disappointing that nowadays so few Portuguese people know the Legend of Nazaré. 100 years ago most people probably knew it.
This Saturday I will return to the Fátima-Batalha region, for a very special video (in a town other than those two), recorded at night. It will be published the following week, if all goes well.

Boa tarde Miguel, rapaz estive aí em Nazaré num bate e volta incluindo, Óbidos e Fátima portanto fiquei aí pouquíssimo tempo e caramba como aí é bonito e com tanta coisa para fazer e passear , praias belíssimas , outro lugar para conhecer realmente com mais tempo e tranquilidade, mesmo porque conheci apenas o sítio de Nazaré a praia só de longe... portanto está marcado como imprescindível um retorno 🙏🙏 abraços e tenha uma ótima semana 👏🤝

Buenas tardes, me ha encantado Nazare, es un pueblo precioso con unas vistas y playas espectaculares. La historia o leyenda de la Virgen de Nazare muy interesante y encantadora. No puede imaginarse lo que nos hace disfrutar con unos videos tan bien realizados y explicados. Muchas gracias. Tengo una curiosidad, al final de la playa se ve como la desembocadura de un rio?.
Muchas gracias Rosa! 😊❤️ Al final de la playa en realidad está la desembocadura de un río (Río Alcoa), pero es un río muy pequeño y angosto, es difícil de ver en el vídeo. Creo que te refieres al puerto deportivo de Nazaré, que está muy cerca del río Alcoa.

Oi Miguel , este vídeo me proporcionou lembranças de minha viagem a Nazaré em 2016 , a cidade é linda , porem não tive tempo para percorrer esses locais mostrados no video ,na minha próxima visita a Portugal estarei visitando Nazaré e farei o roteiro parecido com o seu . em tempo informação "Lucas Chumbo surfa uma onda mutante 27,51 metros em Nazaré no 24 de fevereiro 2024.

Eu quase fui a Nazaré nesse final de fevereiro, mas as previsões indicavam chuva, por isso fui adiando. Mas vou tentar regressar na próxima temporada de ondas gigantes. A última vez que vi essas ondas foi em 2020, e o vencedor desse evento foi precisamente Lucas Chumbo. 😎
Еха, каква красота на океанския простор, в Португалия го видях за първи път, беше ми мечта. Малко завиждам и се възхищавам. И не е горещо, тук вече месец е 35-39 градуса😭. Назаре е голям курорт, но е запазил и уюта на малък град. А панорамата от върха на скалата е зашеметяваща. Не разбирам защо хората снимат непрекъснато вместо да се наслаждават на гледката, да не говорим за селфитата?

Здравей Марта! 🙌 Винаги ли е толкова горещо в България? Наистина се наслаждавам на лятото тази година, много меки температури, без горещи вълни досега. Изхабявам много обувки за една година... 😅 Току-що си купих нов чифт обувки за ходене тази седмица, ще ги нося във видеото, което ще снимам в събота. Много специално видео... 😉
Ще се опитам да се върна в Алгарве скоро, но ще имам много малко свободно време до средата на септември, за съжаление.

Next time you should also visit Pederneira, located on a hill on the other side. Pederneira has two beautiful churches and a viewing area where you have great views of the main town and the beach below. It was the original village where the fishermen lived. Up to the 17th. century Pederneira was on a large lagoon that slowly closed by sediment. When the fishermen went to sea the women worked the fertile lands for extra income. In fact the women often earned more than the men and even now they are often the main breadwinners. If you spend some time in Nazare and observe you will see that women always seem busy, spend time in groups chatting loudly and generally look more energetic, whereas the men are often laid back and don't appear to be as dominant or busy.
Yes, visiting Pederneira was in my initial plans, but it would have been such a long walk that I had to change the itinerary. 😅 But when I return to film the big waves I will try to include Pederneira.
Ah, I didn't know that up to the 17th century that area was a large lagoon! A similar story to Aveiro.
@@POVTours I am not too sure but I think that the Aveiro Lagoon is still there and in good condition. I think that a good example is the Obidos lagoon which would have closed by now but to keep it going the authorities constantly do digging work to keep it open to the sea.

Santo António is indeed one of the possible names, but I found at least two other names, and I have no idea which one is real... 🤔
