BMW xDrive All Wheel Drive System Explained

  • The BMW all-wheel drive system, xDrive, ensures your BMW has the best possible traction at all times, enhancing agility and keeping you safely on track, even on fast bends.
xDrive is the permanent all-wheel drive system from BMW: under normal circumstances, it distributes driver power between the front and rear axles in a 40:60 ratio, and changes this figure variably when the road surface or overall driving conditions change.
Acting virtually instantaneously and a manner so subtle as to be go virtually unnoticed by the vehicle's occupants, xDrive can direct up to 100% of drive forces to one axle. Enabling the driver to start up effortlessly even on slippery surfaces or steep hills, xDrive routes all power to the axles with the greatest traction. When parking, the system reacts to the need for high manoeuvrability at low speed by opening the clutch completely so the powertrain functions optimally.
At the first sign of understeering, drive power to the front axle is reduced. If oversteering is detected, xDrive directs more power to the front axle. Thanks to this dynamic redistribution of power, vehicle stability returns to normal even before the driver notices anything amiss.
Driving on a winding road or taking a fast bend in dynamic style is particularly enjoyable with xDrive: you feel as if your BMW is being guided along the curve. xDrive ensures that none of drive power is wasted on a loss of traction: every kilowatt of power is effectively brought to bear on the road.
xDrive is regulated by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and uses information from the latter system’s sensors to monitor road conditions. In addition, brake force courtesy of DSC is used when there is traction difference between the two sides of the vehicle and wheel spin is likely.

Have you had the drive-train fluids ( trans case , ZF and diffs ) replaced ? Did mine at 60.000 miles last year ( same as your model ) and the ZF responds better . Trans-case oil wasn't too bad either , but diffs oils looked fine .

@@npet6842 Yes I’ve changed the fluids using ZF fluids purchased from FCP Euro. I rigged up a 3-gallon gas can with a 12V pump mounted to the side, SOOW cord, big alligator clips, and a momentary on/off switch set up in ergonomically thump-push fashion. I dumped seven quarts of ZF tranny fluid into the gas can, connected to a remote 12V battery, transparent 1/2 hose, and then pump the fluid into the tranny. I have ISTA plus on my laptop, or you can read from the BMW dashboard, checking the tranny temp as you fill.

....until a guy with quattro shows up. A week ago bought a 2012 530d xDrive - and have had a 2008 A6 Allroad manual with 3.0TDI since 2017. Quattro doesn't slip. EVER. Even on extremely wet or snowy surfaces, iced tram tracks - doesn't matter. Just goes. It's just effortless torque and traction. However, with the bimmer - there are times the system slips, making the rear wheels "do their BMW thing" - making the car oversteer. Which is fun - but far from efficient - or safe - in case the driver is a loon. There are some qualities where BMW is above the audi - the AWD system is not one of them.

No, it's not. That is a unibody car which means all components - engine, suspension, etc, are mounted to the body. if you removed all parts from the body and connecteted them again, you would end up with a complete tangle of loose wires, hoses, and mechanical parts. Additionally - any attempt to drive would end up in snapping the driveshaft - it's not intended to transfer compressing forces ;) You could drive a body on frame car like this just fine though, e.g. Ford Crown Victoria ;)

It doesn't explain too much. There are different kinds of xdrive systems. It's hard to find the right info when buying a bmw. The same with quattro. So for example only in mperformance or M models you will find the high performance xdrive systems using central Limited slip differentials or for RWD a rear LSD. On most models you will find a cheaper drivetrain with torque vectoring by braking at most that is not efficient. The new x1 and 2 series have the cheapest layout and xdrive.
For xdrive and quattro a single lsd (audi uses torsen lsd) is not enough, as compared to a RWD. Si you need either more lsd's or some clever way for torque vectoring not by braking.
"The front and rear differentials in xDrive vehicles are typically an open differential design, thus relying on brake application by the DSC system to transfer power from the slipping wheel to the wheel with traction."The DPC differential features clutch packs on both output sides that are actuated by an electric motor. The clutch pack activates a planetary gearset which causes one wheel to be overdriven."

It doesn’t truly take much imagination to realize it wouldn’t be impossible to get two wheels to turn at different speeds even though they are on the same axel. Besides...if it didn’t actually work that way...do you really think they would claim it does? I mean, it’s not like they could get away with lying about it! Besides, it’s very similar to limited slip differential, which my car has. If one wheel loses traction it sends more power to the one that can handle it, especially made for cornering in track cars. @@thetechlibrarian not realy. it's mostly that our goverments are retarded and have dumb ides about how road safty works. so most people never get tought how to drive fast and how to drift cars. that means that they are not comfortable with theyr cars and they don't know how to react when a car is slipping. i was able to drive a e46 325i with bald summer tires in the snow just fine. but im allso a trained truck driver so i have knowledge about how to keep my car moving and what to do in slippery conditions. i will agree with you that hill starts and such are tricky but a decent pair of winter tires and there should not be mutch problem with RWD vs FWD.

Of course BMW'S traction control is great in the snow if you're from New England like me and have driven through snow your whole life, it'll get you there eventually but my xdrive car barrels through the snow and uphill with zero issues compared to my other rwd 328.
