Stephen Colbert talked about The Beaver name change when it happened, he said it was a gross injustice and told his viewers "go to Urban Dictionary and define 'Canada's History' as the most depraved sex act imaginable involving moose antlers, maple syrup, and the Stanley cup," and I'm pretty sure that you can still go to Urban Dictionary and find such definitions
This is exactly how I already knew about that name change. The first thing I thought of when JJ brought up that subject.
Ahhh, so that's why a certain orange ra_ist wants to annex Canada!
"Lord Beaverbrook" is a crazy appellation for a Canadian. That's like an American being named Tex Eaglewing.

Canadians love to bring up 1812 to any American bullying Canada... "Better watch out, or we'll burn your White House again!".
Even before all this Trump crap, 1812 was still massively cared about. Canadians talk about burning down the White House all the time lol.
Then again I live 10 minutes away from Queenston Heights so maybe it's different for the rest of the country idk.

I can already hear the Germans typing: "HE WAS AUSTRIAN"
Yes, but his circle of friends wasn't. Their list would just all be nazis.
The greatest bit of national PR was Austria’s convincing the world that Hilter was German and Beethoven was Austrian.

It's not like Germany doesn't already have an entire rogues' gallery of Germans like him... Oh wait, they do.
Would the poll have been carried out a few years later, Justin Bieber would've been among the singers.
As would poseur crybaby Drake.
I was a bit surprised Avril Lavigne wasn't on this list. Especially since this list came out in 2007, when her album "The Best Damn Thing" was released, which was a significant departure from her Gothic, tomboyish broodiness the world fell in love with.
Both Justin Bieber and Drake have overtaken Celine Dion as Worst Singers from Canada.
Celine is a lot less well known among millions of people born after 1997/The Titanic Movie’s heyday didn’t experience that time (lucky them).
@@SheilaDeBonisMaybe I'm too young to remember clearly, but I never heard anyone say anything negative about Avril unless they were fans of her early stuff.
And somehow everyone forgot Brian Adams
My Uncle, Hunter is Canadian and he’s pretty scary he posts pictures of skeletons in motorcycles and says “you don’t wanna see my dark side” so I think it could be him
Gerald Bull would be my "goofy" pick. He was a super genius who dreamed of creating a Canadian defence industry to rival America's, but was ground down into madness by the impossibility of the task. He eventually moved to Iraq to make a sci-fi space weapon for Saddam, but was assassinated by either Israel or the US, neither of whom are willing to take credit.
I mentioned him in my iceberg video. He was a pretty dark character.
comic book character
I was thinking Bull would make the list too!
I was thinking of him too!
Bull absolutely should have topped this list, an amoral fiend of the highest refinement.
Imagine being called the Worst Canadian simply because some people find your popularity annoying. Celine Dion shouldn't even be close to this list.
She probably thought it was funny. Her music sucks, but she's got a pretty good sense of humour for what it's worth.
I ❤ Céline
An old work colleague was a VIP escort for Celine at Disney World. Had nothing but great things to say about her and the family and she even hand wrote him a thank you note at the end of her vacation. 10/10 seems like a great lady and hope she can overcome her health issues.
Celine Deon Beaver and newfoundland terriers are the only things I can think of that's is Canada
EA should never be as high on the list of worst companies as it is. They're definitely thieves, but there are rappers and murderers that deserve the top spot. They aren't even the biggest thieves. They just happened to steal a bit from many people
I'd like to nominate myself for worst Canadian. I didn't do anything wrong, I'm just not Canadian so I've already failed as much as I could've

I am Colombian, and my pick would be a surprise to nobody.
Pablo Escobar, the infamous drug lord who caused a lot of destruction and pain during the 80s. Someone who sadly has been turned into something of a romanticized figure by people outside Colombia who know him mostly through international news headlines, the Netflix series and very little else.
When I came to Vancouver as an international student, we introduced ourselves to the rest of the class on the first day. During my introduction, when I mentioned that I was from Colombia, one guy in the back of the classroom literally shouted "Pablo Escobar is from there righ?".
I am sure that guy was just curious, but I felt pretty awkward and embarrassed at the time.
If you're worried about PR, just point out the singer Shakira is from Colombia XD
Yea, I always thought it was weird, I even had students wear “Pablo” merch in high school. Pretty sure there were songs about him too.
Funny you say this. Just today my gas station attendant was wearing a Pablo Escobar t-shirt (I’m from the US)
I imagine if this poll were taken in the US, almost all of them would be recent politicians and culture war figures.

I'm German and this got me thinking about who the worst German would be if we don't count Hitler.
I quickly came to the conclusion that it'd just be another Nazi, probably Goebbels, Himmler or maybe someone like Mengele or Dirlewanger.
If we leave out all the Nazis, it'd probably be Erich Mielke, the former head of the Stasi, or maybe Erich Honecker who was the East German dictator for quite a long time.
Of course if you polled this you'd also get some recent politicians and annoying celebrities though.
Wasn't Hitler an Austrian anyway?
@saulgoodmanKAZAKH Not if you asked him lol. Back then most Austrians, including Hitler, considered themselves to be Germans, which is why the Anschluss was broadly popular in Austria. Of course nowadays that's different, but I think it's fair to count him as German considering that he would've agreed and that he was dictator of Germany.
@@alba489_yeah but that's like calling Elon American.
@josephross8753 definitely not lol
One person I thought of was Helmut Kentler, who convinced the West German government to place foster children with convicted child molesters.
The worst Norwegian is a character called vikund quisling. He was the deffense minister in the 30s who created a fascist party called ns. Ns was controversial not only for being fascist but also causing political violence. He later became the leader of nazi occupied norway which you could imagine how bad that is.

I don't think Germany would struggle to find their worst guy
I would put Luka Magnotta on a list of worst Canadian bad-guys. He was a murderer who sent body parts of his victims to elementary schools through the mail. I would recommend the Netflix series about him though.
I learned about him through one of JJ's Canada icebergs. Honestly kinda sad how desperate he was for attention, especially the detail he included where when he was caught he was reading stories about himself.
If we’re going with killers it has to be Clifford Olson. Not the highest body count in Canadian history, but he targeted children, somehow talked the RCMP into paying him to show where the bodies were hidden, and taunted his victims’ families from jail.
1 lunatic 1 ice pick
Robert pickton goes under the radar . 49 women gone. Course no one cares cause most of them were junkies
Who?
As a Quebecer, I'm pretty sure Maurice Duplessis should be somewhere on the worst Canadian list. There's a reason why we learn in school about the "great darkness" during his long term as Quebec's PM.
Not to mention that his government commited crimes against humanity against tens of thousands of orphans
I completely agree. I'm a US American, and I've read a lot about his oppressive reign in Québec.
And yet the people kept reelecting him again and again.
Premier!
#1: The inventor of "Canadian bacon". That's not bacon. It's ham.
Also, Hamadian bacHam gives pizza an aweful flavor. Idk how real bacon and Canadian bacon can come from the same animal, and yet have such different flavours.
It was actually a way to bypass some sort of trade regulations and get more pork to the states
@@Jabberwockybird If you're being serious (it's hard to tell over the internet, lol), the flavor of both is almost entirely the result of their curing process. The belly meat (where American bacon comes from) isn't "naturally" super salty and smoky, those elements are introduced into the meat by the curing process. Same thing for ham/Canadian bacon. I mention all this because, when I was a kid, I thought pigs were naturally salty, lol. 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂️
The inventory of pineapple on pizza was Canadian.
I personally like it, but I imagine that some people would consider him one of history's monsters.
It's bacon smarty, whether you choose to believe it or not.
Enough about Canadian rights, let's talk about Canadian Wrongs
In terms of worst Americans, a nod can be given to John C. Calhoun for his staunch and unwavering support for slavery in America. A good representative for that atrocity
He was pretty bad, like, he made Andrew Jackson blush.
Woodrow Wilson is the worst American.

I'd go with Jefferson Davis meself, but we think along similar lines. I probably just don't know enough about this Calhoun fellow.
Googled Conrad Black
“He has written eleven books, mostly in the fields of Canadian and American history, including biographies of Quebec premier Maurice Duplessis and US presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard Nixon and Donald Trump, as well as two memoirs. He has also hosted two interview shows on the Canadian cable network VisionTV. A political conservative, he belonged to the UK's Conservative Party, but also has some idiosyncratic views, including his support for Roosevelt's New Deal.”
Interesting fellow.
He is also a convicted felon who sucked up to Trump to get a pardon
I literally just finished reading his book on Donald Trump two hours ago. Honest. I was reading it because of current events, ya know. Anyhoo his book on DJT was published in 2018. Coincidentally (ya, right) he was pardoned by DJT in 2019.
Black was eventually removed from the House of Lords in 2024 for non-attendance. Wikipedia claims his response to this was that he wasn't aware of it and it didn't matter to him. I can see why he might not do well in a popularity poll.

I'm American, so some obvious picks for "Worst American" include John C Calhoun for being the face of Southern Successionism and pro-slavery and Nathan Bedford Forest for founding the KKK and inspiring other hate groups to form. Some more mixed picks that I could see being included would be Andrew Jackson for forcing many East coast native tribes to move to the Midwest and Andrew Johnson for intentionally butchering post-slavery Reconstruction.
One very polarizing pick would be Henry Ford. I say polarizing because he did so much right (creating America's first affordable car company, creating the assembly line structure, and making Saturday a day off from work) and so much wrong (promoting wage-slavery and widespread anti-Semitism).
Benedict Arnold, J Edgar Hoover

The worst Canadian was my 1st grade teacher at Eastview Elementary in Oakville, Ontario in 2002 for the one year I lived in Canada. She claimed to have been struck by lightning three times, didn’t believe in printing on double sided paper and didn’t remember my name until March. She made me have a bad opinion on Canada until I saw this channel.

7:19 Mussolini was not a nazi. “Nazis” specifically refers to the German fascist movement, which Mussolini allied with, but wasn’t a part of.
🤓
Nazis aren't fascists, either. They are Leftists.
To be a pedant, both Mustache Man and Mussolini were nationalist socialists, as distinct from Stalinist or Fabian socialists. They differed quite a lot in practice and rationale, with the Third Reich devoted to mystical racism.
People might call you "pedantic", but they would be wrong. The distinction is important. Nazis were explicitly exhorted to hate Jews. That isn't a part of Fascism, and Mussolini didn't care about Jews at all.
@dlineful You know, I was going to call you a pedant for that comment, but then I realized the more accurate term would be to call you a *Grammar Nazi*
Roch Thériault, AKA "Moïse" (born in Saguenay, QC in 1947), founder of the Ant Hill Kids cult, is a strong contender for worse Canadian in history.
I'm impressed he wasn't even mentioned on the lists. How to explain how bad he was? Imagine Joseph Fritzl had started his religion...
the fact that the magazine itself had to rebrand makes me feel a bit better for where my mind immediately went
I'm Brazilian, and ironically- though certainly not surprisingly- during the decades in which my country was a right wing Dictatorship obsessed with hunting communists under every pillow, the historical figure most often described as "The Worst Brazilian Ever"... was a guy from the early 17th Century that fought against Portugal in favor of Brazil. LOL
Callabar (1609-1635) was the son of a slaver and an indian, and raised with his father, but when the indians, after a lot of Portuguese oppression, joined the Dutch invaders who conquered the Northeastern provinces of Brazil, Calabar took the side of the natives, making an alliance with the Dutch.
They eventually lost and he was nicknamed "*THE* traitor", undisputed owner of the epythet.
In fact, "Calabar" was used as a synonym of Judas in Brazil for CENTURIES. Can you imagine? Dethroning Judas freaking Iscarioth as the hugest traitor in a Carholic nation???? 😅
During the Military Dictatorship, the notion of a civilian joining a small armed militia against the organised power weighted a lot heavier against him than the fact that he was fighting the Portuguese in favor of the locals.
It was not until the 1970s, 200 years after the fact, that a playwright questioned who the HECK were we expecting him to be loyal to, the empire WE rebelled against not long after?????
If it wasn't for Macdonald, the Canadian West would be US territory today, period.
For the US an infamous politician who is quite hated has to be David Duke. Especially since he was almost elected to congress and as governor of Louisiana. With his ties to neo-n@zis and as the former grand wizard really makes him an unsavory figure.
In France, a very disliked person has to be Maurice Papon. He was a collaborator in WWII and was the head of the police in Vichy France. After the war he ended up still being in charge of the police force in France under de Gaulle. He later would organize a m@ssacre of Algerians in Paris in the 1960s. He didn’t face any charges for what he did until decades later.
Why are you bringing up the US?
@@Bear-c4xBecause he asked for people to list who they think is their country’s worst person ever at the end of the Video.
I say the worst person in Irish history is a bit complicated, like Robert Peel, the UK Prime Minister during the Great Irish Famine from top of my head because of his brutal policy in Ireland causing millions of death and millions fleeing Ireland.
But if its an Irish person, that's probably a split between Eoin O'Duffy for his strong support of Nazism and Hitler and he was in charge of the Irish brigade that helped Franco during the Spanish Civil War, so you can imagine what he did in Spain. The IRA and the UVF leaders are also up there aswell for their roles in the bombing and terror campaigns on civilians during the Troubles
I think Lord Haw Haw would be a better pick than O’Duffy. O’Duffy’s politics fizzled out after his botched march on Dublin. Lord Haw Haw buddied around with black and tans and was alledged to have helped them out with the murder of Father Griffin. He went on to run an illegal radio show for the Nazis which tried to convince the irish public to join the axis powers before being hung by the British
It *has* to be someone born in the country of which they are the "worst (nationality)".
Worst that can be said about the Irish volunteers in Spain was that they weren't very effective. At least their hearts were in the right place.
Definitely Rose from “Titanic.” There was room on that door.
Hello J.J. The Acadians were not really expelled into Louisiana, but rather all across the US, then British colonie (and later elsewhere). The Acadians that were in the US either made their way back to Canada, or went to Louisiana, then a French colony. A full video on the topic could be very nice!
Many went to Haiti (then know as St-Dominingue), until the Haitians rebelled. 30 years passed between the expulsion from Acadia and the resettlement in Louisiana.
As an American, I think each person you ask will give you a different answer as to who the worst American is or was. If it were up to me, I’d probably say one of the Confederate bigwigs like Jefferson Davis, a truly awful President like Andrew Johnson, or a just a resolutely repulsive figure like George Lincoln Rockwell.
Having grown up and gone to school in Canada, and taken Canadian history through grade 12, it's much easier to come up with obvious candidates for worst American than worst Canadian. There were bad events in Canadian history, but they don't often have a singular bad figurehead attached.
Like...for Canada, you could name someone who did genocide towards the indigenous populations, but which one? I didn't recognize a single name on this list other than John A Macdonald (who as JJ says is a bit complicated cause also Canada wouldn't exist without him). In America there's a super easy pick--Andrew Jackson, trail of tears guy.
There was slavery in Canada, but like...before Canada was a country, back when it was a colony, and it's hard to point a finger at one particular individual. In the US, sure, there's an obvious figurehead for slavery, Jefferson Davis.
Or Woodrow Wilson, a Lost Causer protofascist?

Canadian World War 1 veterans: *profuse sweating*
Remember: WAR CRIMES ARE PATRIOTIC 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Honest question; Why did you write this? What's the deal with your WW 1 vets?
@@TroubleToby3040Canadian soldiers during WW1 were infamous for barbaric, cruel and inhumane treatment of enemy combatants and would be POWs, especially Germans, with things such as tricking German soldiers by throwing cans of food into trenches to lower their guard and then throwing grenades, extensive use of chemical weapons such as mustard gas, executing SURRENDERING German soldiers, and Canadian officers ordering that no German soldiers be taken prisoner.
@@TroubleToby3040 Well our WWI vets had no issues with enacting many of the reasons why the treaty of Versailles was signed due to the amount of warcrimes perpetrated by Canadian soldiers. Mostly brutal tactics including gunning down soldiers after they had surrendered. Shooting enemy combatants to wound them so their comrades would come to help and turn one target into many. It got to the point where the reputation had to be put down and so they added articles of war to the treaty.
@ WOW! I didn't know ANY of that. I'll look into it further, for sure.
I have to say, their actions must have been really noteworthy since soldiers of every army involved in every war have been known to transgress "honorable" conduct in the heat of the moment. It is, sad to say, inevitable in any war that goes on long enough.

After abolition, there was a minor scandal when it was learned that Mr. Ellis (a guard in the Don Jail) was still being an annual stipend to maintain his skills in case Parliament changed its mind.

Would you like the entire J6 list, or just the Shaman and the gallows guy?
@@hockeydude69 no, he meant actual traitors. The protestors aren't even close to "full confederate"
In Britain we don't really have anyone. Everyone is just great. No problems in our history at all.
John Lennon. There, I spoiled it for you
In Italy we have a long list of bad people, even longer if we consider the Italians that lived before the unification of the country. My 10 picks would be:
- Totò Riina (Mafia boss and involved in domestic terrorism)
- Rodolfo Graziani (Fascist general and war criminal in Libya and Ethiopia)
- Benito Mussolini (Duh)
- Licio Gelli ( Neo-Fascist leader, war criminal, organized fascist terrorism after ww2 and, on a minor note, taints my city’s name by having being birthed here)
- Felice Maniero (ruthless gangster from Veneto)
-Giuseppe Brusca and Matteo Messina Denaro (Sicilian mobsters under orders of Riina that committed heinous crimes including dissolving a kid in acid)
- Luigi Cadorna (ww1 general who regularly ordered executions of soldiers for “cowardice”)
-King Victor Emanuel III (allows fascism to take power when he had the chance to stop them and entered Italy in ww1 without the consent of parliament)
- Pope Pius IV Carafa ( Before becoming pope was the head of the inquisition and under his papacy he crushed all attempts of religious reformation in the country, just adding him to represent the Italians before unification )
Antonio Gramsci is the worst Italian
I might just not know Italian history that well, but I would say one of the worst Italians in history was Christopher Columbus, if not the worst, definitely somebody to consider
C'è un film su Cadorna - UOMINI CONTRO (1970).
Great video. My knowledge of Victorian Era Canada has increased! Side note: your outro music sounds like a phone alarm and made me jump and look at my phone. Neither good or bad, just thought you'd find it amusing.
Curious why Maurice Duplessis isn't on here. The guy that (allegedly) allowed torture on Orphans/used them as test subjects for MK Ultra. The Duplessis Orphans is a fascinating rabbit hole to say the least
Not only that but he was very dictatorial when ruling Quebec and I believe tried to ally his party with Arcand. From what I remember he was also a very moralistic guy outwardly despite his alcoholism.
Duplessis also allowed Quebec to remain a "only catholic" province and depending on the area catholic church ran public schools
There was a similar program in Japan which voted Oda Nobunaga as the greatest Japanese. He is known as the Great Unifier of Japan, but also as the Demon Daimyō, for his brutal tactics. So could possibly be listed as the worst as well.
I’m very surprised Marc Lépine isn’t on any of these lists. Especially when considering who they did include.
same with vince li
Didn't think JJ would have a beaver mag.
The national post being considered respectable is hilarious to me
"Beaverbrook" is such a Canadian name. I thought that it would be a parody at first.
Fun fact, the reason why Tennessee is called The Volunteer State comes from the War of 1812 (not the Mexican War or the Civil War, as people might assume).
That’s when they provided the most volunteers of any state for the war, wasn’t it?
Pretty impressive for a state that wasn’t one of the first thirteen. People have probably attributed it to a sort of frontier spirit many of those early Tennesseans and their sons and daughters might have had.

If it was voted on today... Nickleback would replace Celine Dion
I think Celine Dion would/should still win between those 2. She is atrocious in my 100% subjective view😂
90 seconds in and I'm expecting to see BOTH Trudeau's to be there.
12:18 - The Western left will, indeed, declare that creation of Canada was a nett negative.
I was expecting Kim Campbell haha
In Germany, the question would have to be "Who was the worst German who was neither a Nazi nor a monarch?". :-D
Nor an GDR polititian*
That's an easy question, it's JayStation.
Reading Sam Hughes’ Wikipedia page, and this man sounds genuinely insane. Some highlights:
* “Hughes was infamous for belligerently giving orders to troops and their officers and he publicly criticized officers in front of their men, telling one officer who was speaking too quietly for his liking "Pipe up, you little bugger or get out of the service!"”
* “When Hughes addressed one officer as a captain, only to be told by the man that he was a lieutenant, Hughes promoted him on the spot to captain.!When it was pointed out that he did not have that power as minister of defence, Hughes shouted "Sir, I know what I'm talking about!" and said if he wanted to promote the officer to a captain, then the officer was a captain.”
* “Hughes insisted on riding around the camp surrounded by an honour guard of lancers and shouting out orders for infantry manoeuvres long since removed from the training manuals like "Form square!"”
* “When John Farthing, the Anglican bishop of Montreal, visited Hughes to complain about the shortage of Church of England chaplains at Valcartier to tend to the spiritual needs of Anglican volunteers, Hughes burst into a rage and began to loudly swear at Farthing, making liberal use of a number of four letter words not normally used to address an Anglican bishop, who was predictably shocked.”
Lord Beaverbrook owned the Canada car and Foundry plant in Fort William Ontario. As British minister for war production he used this Canadian plant to manufacture 1,451 Hawker Hurricanes which turned the Battle of Britain and helped win the war. He also did things to foster and preserve Canadian art, fund Canadian charities and record Canadian History.
Imagine putting him on the list of worst Canadians.
Left wing lieberal revisionism... all founders of Canada are le ebil white make slave owners.
There are places in New Brunswick still named after Beaverbrook.
Justin Bieber and Justin Trudeau should have been on one of these lists.
To be fair, Pierre Elliott Trudeau is the worst person who happens to be Canadian
What did he do to you
Here in NZ it would most likely be Governor Grey. He served twice as the governor of New Zealand during early colonial history, and while in his first term he was pretty good, being friendly to local Māori, he angered local white populations by refusing to impose a constitution, so he got sent off to lead a war in south africa, and then he would come for his 2nd term and start the Waikato War, advocate for the annexation of French colonies, and set the stage for centuries of oppression and land "sales.".
It's only recently that he became a great evil, though. In my grandmother's day, he was a good governor, Grey. Similar to some of the people in the Canadian polls, his fall from grace is representative of the modern emphasis on Māori rights and reparations.
For New Zealand I'll make an unconventional pick and put forward a Maori man, Te Kooti, as worse than any single Kiwi of European descent. He was kind of a religious warlord.
Another possibility was the genocide of the Moriroi, but that happened too early to really be called "New Zealand".
I don't think the Christchurch mosque killer would be misplaced due to recency bias, but it's hard to really say he was a New Zealander.
So awesome to hear Propagandhi mentioned. An insanely influential band.
4:05 - Which brand of glue has your friend been sniffing? Fat Mike himself admitted that NOFX and many of the other bands on his label were ripping Propagandhi's sound from How To Clean Everything. They've been going since 1986. Maybe don't ask a 12-year-old next time...
The worst Canadian is J.J. McCullough because he says canadian culture isn't actually the most distinct, unique, sophisticated, cosmoplitan, or remarkable culture to ever exist. Also he isnt constantly complaining about Trump invading which is very uncanadian
-Real Canadian patriot
The people that reviewed Paul Bernardo's lawyer, and said that him breaking into a sealed crime scene to steal evidence was just him vigourously defending his client.
