    Very few people commenting seem to understand how this weapon works. Each of the smaller munitions launches a central large explosively formed penetrator at the target while several surrounding smaller penetrators spread out in a cone. These penetrators are small but have far more energy than a conventional projectile. The penetrators are traveling at at least 2km/s and could be moving as fast as 10km/s while a standard round, like a 50 caliber bullet, will struggle to make it to 1 km/s and these perpetrators carry more mass than any round would. The shape of the charge face as well as a cavity within the explosive itself is designed to form the copper into an aerodynamically stable shape and so the result we'd expect then from a successful test is a small hole into the tank, likely damaging quite a few of the internals and usually focused on the engine block, and an elliptical spray of smaller penetrators around the tank. Tanks deal well with even fairly substantial explosive charges. They do not deal well with small holes getting punched in them.
    This test was with a dummy load to gauge the performance characteristics of this weapon in some respect. There are very few single weapons you could drop to disable that many armored vehicles at once. In that way I think the role of something like this is obvious.

      @Law Dorherty It's not exactly relying on a massive shockwave to destroy their targets. MOABs work by having enough explosives packed in them to level a building. This on the other hand fires out multiple penetrators from above. Literally a shower of pain

      a shaped charge like those in HEAT warheads will produce a ~10km/s velocity jet, but those are designed to detonate point blank against their target. with even a few feet of standoff from their target, the jet will dissipate and rapidly become ineffective (see: slat armor). the skeets in the CBU105 are EFP shape charges that use a much flatter copper cone to create a more coherent projectile that can travel farther before breaking up. the downside is a rather large velocity penalty. that said, you are very right that 2lb of copper moving at ~1km/s is gonna punch a pretty nice hole through the top of just about anything.

  • @Obi3CH012

    The CBU-97/105 family is designed for neutralization not destruction. The "skeets" that get propelled into the air have a IR and laser sensor. They scan the ground for height differences and heat from engines. If they find any, they destroy the motorblock of said vehicle with a dart-projectile. Although there are some confirmed tankkills in terms of "blowing them up", keep in mind that this is most likely test-munition with a reduced charge so that the kinetic effects can be observed more closely.

      IR imaging only. Not laser. There are two types . Anti-armor, and Combined Effects. Anti-Armor will fuze fire the shape charge onto IR signature of metal. Combined effects also fuses for lower and smaller thermals of personell , and detonates a HE frag munition and incendiary zirconium rings.
      The 'Shake & Bake' approach. Poke holes with HE frag in fuel tanks. Follow up with incendiary to set spilled fuel and munitions on fire. Add some WP to create smoke and confuse survivors.

      They may not be "dumb", but they still leave unexploded bomblets that kill people. 40 bomblets at a time, even with small odds, leave a lot of UXO. It's a modern day equivalent of salting the earth. The 2008 Dublin convention bans the use of all such weapons, despite some bullshit exceptions with requirements this weapon doesn't meet. The SFW is big money and a big part of why the U.S. doesn't join the convention.

    Very interesting how the sensors direct the canisters to different directions to have numerous angles of fire on a single target. Super cool. Also for all the people complaining about the weapons ethics, I did a university paper on ethics in warfare. There are much more worse things for example, think of this cluster munition with smaller fragments meant for Anti-personal but the fragments are undetectable within the human body via x-rays by design, much worse (Banned by Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, protocol I).
    Another thing, there are about a dozen or so countries that haven't Ratified Protocol II of the Geneva convention, purposefully not saying signed, because the US HAS signed all 3 protocols but has only ratified Protocol III, meaning we only officially enforce Protocol III. Just check out a book, there were tons at my library. Below is a link to a map you can just wiki on who has signed what, check to see if they have also ratified it.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_II#/media/File:Parties_to_the_Geneva_Conventions.svg
    TLDR: Super cool weapon, quit crying about laws and bans, there are much worse things out there that you have absolutely no idea about just thank god they are not used against you due to our military might and ability to protect ourselves and retaliate.

    This is actually a terrifying weapon. It looks quite festive, like fireworks. It doesn't look like it does any real damage. However, then you start to realize that each of those things (Skeets) hanging on the parachutes have a scanner that looks for armoured targets. If it acquires them, it aims (calculates) and then shoots molten copper into the vehicles. And armour really doesn't like molten copper shooting in it at incredible speed. It will mess up electrics and occupants badly, disabling them both. Each of those Skeets also fires a ring of shrapnel around the target, so there will be even more free body holes for anyone standing around it. At the same time, it's almost invisible. It's like it has the intimidation factor of a mouse but the strength of an elephant. Underestimate it and you will lose both your vehicle and your life.

    • @duxd1452

      The BLU-108 submunition has a dual effect warhead, meaning it has both an explosively formed penetrator in each of the 4 warheads per submunition to kill armored vehicles and a secondary fragmentation ring to kill any soldiers in the vicinty of the vehicles. That second effect is what you see hitting the sand (well that and the remains of the munition and submunitions which hit the ground before the actual warheads because the warheads have parachutes). If you look closely you can also see the explosively formed penetrators hitting the armored vehicles. These are metal slugs with a small diameter for penetration. They dont cause a big explosion, they just penetrate metal quickly and efficiently. But anything behind that metal is very dead, even if the vehicle only has a little hole in it. And if it hits an engine that engine is gone. Or if it hits ammo it will detonate it. etc.

      That's the thing, these cluster bombs are purely kinetic, not explosive. The reason you don't see fires and explosion is because the tanks and trucks are empty and not filled with munitions and fuel. That's why they look unimpressive, but trust me, you don't want to be inside a tank while being targeted by projectiles traveling
      2-5 km/s designed to penetrate the thinnest armor of a tank (the roof).

      @@studentloans2488 No. I've seen this aftermath first hand, vs a humvee. Granted, it was not pressurized like a tank would be with NBC gear, but most tanks aren't buttoned up most of the time anyway.
      All the seats in this humvee were being used, but the projectile went part way through the inside without hitting anyone. The rollbars were hit, and it looked like they had been squirted with a small squirt gun, due to the splash of the penetrator, but the rims of the holes were plated in copper. This jet stopped before it got as far as the windshield (vehicle was hit in the trunk). The driver's seat had the surface nylon melted in a splash-like pattern, but it didn't go though to the other side, and I couldn't verify that that was caused by the weapon. It may have ignited something in the area temporarily.
      This cluster junk has less energetic material to form and propel the projectiles than an RPG-7, but that energy is split among about 12 small projectiles (anti-personell) and 1 supposedly-anti-tank projectile. It's an overpriced POS.

    Many an Iraqi and few Lybian soldiers did not live to contemplate a lesson. When your armored column is under attack by sensor fused weapons, DO NOT seek cover under vehicle! Run away from the side of the vehicle. Munitions are are fused for vehicle thermals. Well most of the time.If anti-personell combined effects submunitions are part of the delivery package, then you are screwed either way. If your armored column is being attacked by MK-20 Rockeye, then buttoning up in a tank may save your heathen behind. Then again it may not. But being a soft squishy human caught in open in beaten zone of MK-20, you chance of survival is practically zero. Best if your country or regime or group not fuck with those who control air and have ability to deliver those kinds of munitions.

    A lot of misunderstanding in the comments. These don't look very impressive from the outside. The small submunitions will essentially fire hypersonic metal slugs through the roof of the tank. From the outside it looks fairly harmless. On the inside however, there is pure carnage. Think of it like the entry vs exit wound of a bullet, except in this case the exit wound is made of hundreds of blitzing fast steel fragments. A mortar shell blowing up right above everyone's head is a fair comparison. Either way the tank is almost certainly disabled.

  • @NationalSniper
    @NationalSniper 5 років тому +1

    These are NOT banned. Please change the title. These are armor penetrators. Its like an air delivered M270 MLRS missile. MLRS is used by many NATO nations.
    I never understood the negative bias against cluster munitions. Most often by people who know nothing of weapons and warfare. Political correct nonsense.
    Yes bomblets can not go off and lay there and be a danger. But so can normal bombs and artillery shells. Even after 70 years dud artillery rounds and aircraft bombs are still being found in the ground in Europe. They can still go off when not treated right. And they do a lot more damage compared to a bomblet.
    There have been measures taken to avoid deaths. By making them bright colored so dud bomblets can be detected quickly. Also information about NOT PICKING THEM UP is widely available, so anyone who is going to do that is an idiot that chooses to put himself in harms way.
    Its like finding an old bomb and hitting it with a shovel.
    So I see no difference between cluster munitions and regular bombs, shells, missiles and tank rounds.
    Furthermore manufacturers are attempting to make the bomblets better, adding fail safes to make sure they will explode.
    The problem with all these weapons is not the weapon itself but HOW it is used. Used against armored columns is different from using it in a city.
    The effects of using conventional bombs instead could in fact mean MORE collateral damage and also more friendly soldiers dying by lacking good weapons to face the enemy.
    The whole point of a bomb like this or MLRS is defeating large groups of enemy armor. Having to clean up submunitions afterwards is better than losing the battle (and war) or prolonging the war as that would result in far more tragedy.

      This is a cluster bomb. It drops a a bomb, which drops decently sized bomblets. These bomblets have skeets which will detect where enemy vehicles are, and then launch a kinetic penetrator at the vehicle. That's why the vehicles *LOOK* like they're unharmed, but if you took a closer look at them, they'd be filled with holes from the skeets. The skeets are not explosive. The explosions in the air that you see are from the skeets being launched. The explosions on the ground are triggered because the bomblets are programmed to self destruct once they hit the ground, to prevent unexploded ordnance from hurting civilians.

    • @throngcleaver
      @throngcleaver 4 роки тому

      Every target in the test was hit at least once. Read up on the CBU-105 to see how the submunitions actually work. Without going into detail, they simply fire an explosively formed penetrator through the top of the tank. Much like a rifle shooting from above, but with 10 times the speed of a bullet. The damage is nearly all internal, ending with a dead or dying crew, exploding the ammunition or at least setting it on fire, and enough damage to the engine or fuel tanks to stop the tank, or other vehicles.

There should be no rules in war, it stops the soldier from being able to win the battle/war. The Japanese didn't care about rules during WWII, the North Koreans/Chinese/Soviets, didn't care about rules during the Korean War, the North Vietnamese/Soviets didn't care about the rules during the Vietnam War and finally the Taliban/Al-Queda don't care about the rules now.
