    You join us this week at the North Centre and Detached Bastions and surrounding ditches, informally known as 'Devils Alley' to the locals, which formed an important element of the Western Heights defences, protecting part of the land front to the north-west of the port of Dover.
    They were built into the linear defences of the Heights and provided a platform for artillery and infantry with casemates below being used as barracks. Work on the bastion was started in 1805 though was left in an unfinished state until 1860 when a major phase of improvements to the fort as a whole was underway. By 1862 the bastion comprised two distinct elements (north centre, and detached bastions) built to a more powerful and coherent design. Both bastions supported some artillery until around 1900, after which their use for any purpose was intermittent; small scale re-occupation for local defence occurred in both the first and second world wars when the fortifications were mainly used as barracks for the troops travelling over the channel to France.

    Breath taking exploration, mind boggling the amount of Galleries and tunnels.Great to see the drawbridge counterweights in situ.Once again brilliant cinematography and narration from the the dynamic duo Em and Stu The battery drainage was spooky, happens quite often in haunted buildings!

      This place was an absolute bucket list explore for us, and it didn't disappoint, even though it took us 2 attempts to find a way in, it was definitely worth the effort! Thanks again for your lovely comments and support, glad you enjoyed watching 😊👍

      It's such an amazing piece of history, just a shame not more is done to look after it but I guess it always comes down to money..
      I'm sure it's probably deteriorated abit since the 1990s.. Thanks for watching really glad you enjoyed watching 👍😊

    I think out of all the explores you've achieved to date, this was by far the most interesting. There is no way I would go down there, but fascinating to see the interior.
    The internal architecture was amazing with the drawbridge and shooting galleries. Such a shame that time has taken its toll and its fallen into disrepair, but there again the overall condition is hood considering.

      Thanks Alice! This was a place we'd wanted to explore for a few years now, so glad we got the chance. Even after 2 centuries and so called modern progress destroying some of the previously impenetrable ditches its still incredibly difficult to get into! It's a shame it lacks funding to be looked after properly, I'm sure it would create alot of visitors to the area..
      For now we'll continue to live in wonder at its incredible scale and numerous hidden abandonment that lays beneath just waiting to be explored.. Sadly it defeated us on our most recent visit but we'll be back when the mud dries up! Lol.
      Thanks for watching as always 😁👍

    Have to be very careful in these ruins. Without a high density light, it’s too dangerous. Glad to see you have one! Thanks for the video this day. Glad to see you both back. Cheers Em and Stu! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸

      Thanks Martin, we always take at least 2 lights each when in these large dark places, like u say u can't be too careful as in the pitch black you'd never get out! It aways astounds me when people go in with just their mobile phone light! 😳 We had such a great day doing this, thanks for watching 👍😊

      It's genuinely massive and probably the biggest place we've ever explored, there was so much we didn't get to see, this really was just the tip of the iceberg! We're down there again next month so hopefully will find some more.. Thanks for watching 👍🙂

    Its a great explore !! Nicely done !! 👌Those steps don't half take it out of you, would have been cool to see the wall climb... But agree getting down again had a knack to it... I think I jumped in the end 😂😂

    • @ExploringWithEmAndStu
      @ExploringWithEmAndStu  7 місяців тому +1

      I think I pretty much sat on Stu's shoulders to get up the wall and his mission was definitely not something he'd have wanted me to film lol! Getting down was unexpectedly just as hard.. hoping to return again next month to try and get into some of the casemates south of the Citadel but we won't be attempting the pipe that's for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting, always appreciated 😊👍

      @@ExploringWithEmAndStu We've just done the Citadels casemates .. we will be going back soon too - the camera stopped recording on the final stretch so we kinda owe it to people to finish that one off .. . Its tough though as the hole to get to that part is so small I couldn't fit through it .. I may just wear a TShirt next time and hope that I can compress myself enough to get through it.. Chris managed to get in there but then the camera stopped (memory used up I think) .. he said its was soggy wet clay inside and not easy to get in further - we may hold off until the summer to finish that one. Yeah defo lots worth seeing in Dover 👌

      Thanks Adam, I bet the ladder was abit easier than the slippery slop we had to slide down! We're down there again next month to see what else we can find, hopefully a few of the old 'caves' around the area this time.. Can't wait! Thanks for watching 👍😊
