Seriously underrated Joplin piece
This piece is a bit better than Maple Leaf Rag.
Change my mind.
Debate me if you want. I am willing to hear whatever you have to say.
@@HasufelyArod I think the trio of this is better than the trio of maple leaf (at least more melodic) but the other sections of maple leaf are brilliant imo.
@@HasufelyArod I think Maple leaf rag is better than that, but this is good still. For my the best is Magnetik rag :D
@@marthur8011 i just heard Pineapple Rag and now I am in love with this piece
@@HasufelyArod Yeah it is pretty nice too.
Maple leaf rag introduced me to ragtime and I'm so happy
That’s so cool! For me it was Magnetic Rag
@Mr.SharpNumber1 ye funny enough I heard it years ago in a roblox game and tried replicating it , then shazam came out and I tried playing it found out the name and learnt the whole thing 😅😅
Same I can play Fig leaf rag and Maple leaf rag both now and learning other songs like 3am by paul baker and watermelon man by herbie Hancock. Hoping to learn the entertainter soon.
Brooo same here!!! I already learned Maple Leaf Rag and now I'm trying to learn Fig Leaf and The Entertainer! I never get bored of playing ragtimes.@@HenryBaker-g3r
I've been practicing this song for two months. THIS is what it's supposed to sound like?! Haha! Wow. You are amazing.
Jenn Hoff yeah he is
Oh holy this song took me 5 months
I bet if anyone tried hard enough, they could probably do it in a few weeks, but that's extreme dedication.
Josiah Fickinger great
@@willbrother9246 I learned only the second part to Sunflower Slow drag in a day or two.
Ragtime is by nature "mechanical" music because it is based on strong, march-style rhythms. I don't know what you mean by "letting it rip" then being "mechanical again".
I realize you probably won't read this but I have a question about one of your other pieces. In your recording of ragtime nightingale you had a very fun transition between the trio and final section but I'm not sure what you played since it wasn't in the original sheet music. Can you describe what arpeggio/notes you were using?
@@yummygopher1065 man you're like 7 years late lmao
@@mrassassin3963 yeah I was hoping he would get a notification but I guess not
Ragtime is super well read ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
i just had this stuck in my head AND I JUST FOUND IT OMG I FEEL SO ACCOMPLISHED
Same!!!!😆
SAME BRUH
Would like to pay my respects to Dr Cory. Your performances are an exemplary model I keep returning to. Your understanding and technique are awesome. As you already know this, I will finish by thanking you for your wonderful tutorial videos and sheer generosity. I'll keep practicing to try and achieve a tiny fraction of what you have. I think you are absolutely right about the Bach Chorales. Thank you sir!
he makes it look easy
Well, he's been playing for 40+ years....
That is incred how fast his hand move n th right spot
It kind of is, but you'll get there. I believe in you :)
This song is very well read
Still haven‘t come across anyone playing Joplin‘s pieces as beautifully as you sir. I hope one day you can upload these to Spotify!
Every time I hear this I imagine two fellas in a silent film participating in a number of antiquated antics
I'm learning this at the moment and OK WOW ITS HARD
Amanda Ransom sme
Amanda Ransom It's a LOT harder than it looks :(
+Amanda Ransom I bet its at least 200 hours or more of practice to learn this. If I had to take an educated guess.
+Amanda Ransom dude its that trio that is absolutely ridiculous
***** wow mature
the most underrated piece in history
On the score I have there's a note from the composer: "Do not play this piece fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast". IMHO this piece, especially the third strain, really rewards playing in a languorous style.
"Don't play ragtime fast" means don't play 140+bpm. Ragtime is meant to be played 100-120 bpm, and this song is doing eighth notes in the left hand. When you consider "slow" consider it according to how the music is written and the indicated tempo. People consistently complain ragtime is too fast, even when it's played properly! If the person sounds like they're playing to their limits, testing their virtuosity, then it's probably too fast. Otherwise, leave it alone.
I do think this piece should be played a little slower
@@abeycee7427 . . . because you have a Eurocentric bias as a result of hearing it played like salon music by classical pianists. You are, however, entitled to your taste which is, of course, subjective. Listening to historic ragtime recordings from Joplin's lifetime offers a different perspective.
@@MooPotPie Joplin himself writes on the music notation: Do not play ragtime fast. If you play it at a more leisurely speed, you get the beauty of the melody you lost at faster speeds
A very well-read piano piece, if you know what I mean...
WE MAKIN IT OUT OF THE EIFFEL TOWER WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Wait, you actually don't know?@@bloonyTheOriginal
It was really hard to play this piece even when I played it slow. You sure have skill to play it that fast
I love your piano. I can't imagine how great it sounds in person.
Rag time is just one of those classics that makes you want to listen to them for ever and ever until your able to actually play them yourself
Best i have heard. Just right tempo. Joplin would be proud!
Brilliant. Mr J would salute his hat to you - you nailed the entire meaning of the piece.
Ya
Beautiful interpretation

Your rag is always the best - your articulation is exceptional - clean and soooo smooth.
Just amazing . I listen over and over again . I only wish I had your talent . Thank you for this wonderful performance of my favourite Joplin Rag .
Another awesome filmclip to add to my favorites. Thanks Cory. You're the best :)

I simply LOVE Fig Leaf Rag. I listen to this all the time. It makes me happy and reminds me of fruit. I dunno why.🥝🫐🍇🍑🍎🍍🍈
I'm pretty sure figs are fruits
Ahh, ragtime is what first got me into the piano! Such a good genre! Have you ever played Frog Legs Rag by James Scott? You should take a look if you can, it's awsome :)
Very well read
I hate you
Oh yeah thats HONEY for my ears, you are feeding me with your skills
I don’t know how you do it, you inspire me so much Mr Cory!!

Hey, what’s that thing we’re all battling for?
One of my favorite ragtime pieces.
Cory Hall is a musician extraordinary.
great composer, great technique, great moment
Great job! I enjoyed this very much. Great tempo and style. (I'm a classical concert pianist/university prof). Sounds like you're having a great time with this, so I expect many others will too! Thanks.

So what are we battling for?
Dream island!
Dream island? That sounds like a disease!
Well its not! To quote the grey faceless robot, a whole square mile of paradise blah blah blah and the winner even gets to choose who comes in and who doesnt!
This is the first time I have seen this song played live. Well played and keep up the good work!
Perfectly charming performance, with some truly excellent left hand articulation. Tasteful octave adjustments too. Bravi!
Wow! Seemingly effortless, precise and nearly flawless! I would suspect Scott J is smiling!
Wow great job!
One of my favorite ragtime pieces!

Mighty fine playing! The style is so ON!!!
In my experience fig leaf rag is like ‘Oh yeah I’ve heard that before! What’s that song called again?’ Love the content and arrangement!

Thank you Mr. Hall.
This guy is good😀!
Silent films 🎶🎵🎶🎵🤩
Again, as great as always! But I am also wondering why you deleted your earlier video about the story behind the rag. I enjoyed reading the different perspective that was only offered on your video, and also liked the unique interpretation that made it your own, including the slower distinguished tempo. If it is not too much trouble, can I ask you to reupload it? Thank you for all your great performances!
Got to this video from the link on your website. Looking forward to the complete Joplin book. Loved sight reading and harmony and I hear ti May be bound up wonderfully like that one was. Truly, this book will make piano in 2020 be exciting!
Something's wrong. There are 39,000 views and only 301 likes. It should be the other way around!
39 000
BurrowMonster lol
Er - not quite sure how it would work out mathematically :) Otherwise agree :)
Burrowmonster I feel like it's a glitch
IT'S OVER 39,000!

Fun fact: most of us actually heard this song in many youtube videos but didn't knew how is it called or who composed it (turns out it wasn't Kevin MacLeod lol)

best songs 80s
Amazing interpretation, specially the 4th part. I played this song, almost ten years ago. Ragtime is very fun. But not too fun as brazilian music ;)
WOW! that was AMAZING! I've never heard of this tune. apparently, it was written by Joplin as a test piece. it's one of his most complicated rags the other is Maple leaf Rag? was it difficult to learn?
Fan-bloody-tastic. Keep it up.
Maple leaf rag: YOU CANT BEAT ME HAHAHHAA I AM THE KING OF RAGTIME
12th street rag: so, you have chosen death
This song reminds me a lot of early UA-cam videos.
Brilliant - good tempo!
I NEVER KNEW THIS SONG WAS THAT FAMOUS!!!
So cool
Bravo !
