Regular trip time to Paris is 3h 35min instead of 4h 22min. The reason for the elongated travel time is the renovation of the Stuttgart-Mannheim HSL. This renovation ends on Oct. 31st. Then ICE/TGV trains will head to Karlsruhe with 250 kph again.
Have you traveled on the Cologne-Frankfurt line yet? It's a journey of less than 50 minutes (By car it takes 1h30 if you're lucky and driving very fast), and the route is rather astonishing, having a huge amount of tunnels and bridges, with grades of up to 4%. If you manage to get a seat behind the driver, it becomes a roller coaster like experience. Officially the top speed on the route is 300kph, but due to the steep grades you'll often go faster, especially if the train is delayed. One time my train reached 323kph.
Maybe it was a speed of a little bit more than 300 km/h. Thats usually the maximum speed on the Köln-Frankfurt line. To Paris they are faster with about 320 - 330 km/h.
@@Wakajce It is quite a few years back (2009 or 2010) so I might be misremembering, but the train had stopped just after entering the SFS going towards Frankfurt when it stopped for about 25 minutes. And I distinctly remember seeing the speed on the display passing 320kph once we got going again.
The Köln-Frankfurt line is equipped with LZB cab signalling which will automatically apply the brakes if the train exceeds the speed limit by more than a couple km/h. If you saw a speed display much over 300 then it was probably due to a sensor error (GPS position error etc).
When you have an "Flexpreis-Ticket" for the first class in an ICE or IC you can use DB Lounge and the DB Premium Lounge. These Lounges are at the bigger Stations in Germany.
Good to mention the difference between the two series of ICE3. Also worth noting : In the latest iteration, the nice lounge behind the driver cab was removed. It was possible to see tracks in front and turn the main lights off in this area. Very handy for sleeping, especially when I took an early morning train from Munich. Vision through the driver compartment can be blocked by the driver himself : by a simple command, the glass wall becomes blurry. First series of ICE3 also have 6-seat compartments in 1st class. The lounge with front (or back) view is present on the ICE-T trains as well.

There are some little cookies or chocolate bars that the staff is giving in 1st class, so there is a little snack, but it is something, right? :D I prefer the 2nd class seats. In my opinion the 1st and 2nd generations of the ICEs are the best. I love the seats (2nd class) there. You should ride them! The worst ICE is the newest 4th gen, because the seats and speed suck. You can book (even last minute sometimes) the Sparpreis on DB. It is very hidden on ticket mashines and website, but you can maybe travel cheaper. Greetings from Frankfurt, Germany!
In 2018 we traveled from Stuttgart Hbf to Paris-Est onboard SNCF's EuroDuplex, it was my first time being aboard that train. Btw, I'm from the Stuttgart region so I'm glad you visited the station! Lol

Hey Thibauld, Just took Amtrak, Acela, First Class, from Washington to New York today, Saturday September 12th, 12:50pm departure. Sorry your experience was disappointing. Mine was excellent. Really nice route! I'm impressed by the travel time considering the hinderances on the German side. The first class seats remind me of those in Railjets while the other interior details look more premium than in the Railjet which is itself more like the ICE 4 inside (except the seats). Really hoping to see you one day in Prague, there is a lot to see from the rail perspective like Regiojet and the Leo Express trains! I don't want your Czech(-oslovak) train experience to be based on that one Eurocity review. 😄
I like the ICE more than the TGV. I find even the second class much more comfortable (especially the head cushion) and the whole design of the interior is so much more nice and timeless than the TGV. A lot of the TGVs have a very outdated interior design. Also the ICE is more iconic on the outside, because we kept the same timeless design over the years and don‘t change it completely every couple of years.
Very nice trip report I think stuttgart could become a international hub when the new station is complete could have through high speed and other trains going south to Switzerland and beyond The train you rode was designed for channel tunnel because DB was supposed to make a high speed service from London to Germany which would have been good but in recent years the project was scrapped (we all know the real reason why scrapped 😒)
You get free meals and drinks in the DB Lounge in the major stations, unless you have a "Supersparpreis" ticket which doesn't include Lounge entry. Also, you can have everything from the Bistro brought to your seat in first class. But you'll still have to pay. You will get sweets or other small, single-serving snacks for free in first class, though, as well as newspapers.
Very cool video, thanks a lot !!!! I know that each seat has a screen which displays when it’s free or not. Do you know if it’s allowed to change seat ? I don’t like reverse seats 😅
In my humble opinion I love all German rail travel whether it’s regional or ice and when my wife and I get the opportunity to visit Germany again I’ll do what I always do and get the 7 day ticket for rail travel in the area I’m visiting this opens up the whole area to explore and in many instances the 7 day ticket is only a few euros more than the return ticket price from the airport to the city you are staying in plus you get tram travel as well
Yeah… 293km/h pendolino speed record holder, cross-european ready, soon operating to German at speed between 200-250km/h Polish SLOW train 😉 BTW, 293km/h was achieved on 3KV DC 😉
Fun Fact: The ICE 3 (Velaro D) is also called as ICE3, because the Design of the first ICE 3 had Bombardier and not Siemens, but all other parts ar from Siemens
I wonder, that people were standing in the train like they had no place to sit. Weren't they obliged to have a reservation in France? In Germany ICE-Trains often were overcrowded (before corona). We once came to a halt in Frankfurt Airport Station and the conductors informed us, that everybody without a seat has to leave the train. They pointed out, that the high-speed route ahead had tighter safety regulations and the train cannot take the route, if there are more people on board than the train has seats. Since only a few people voluntarily left, the conductors offered 25 Euros for everybody to leave. After it was clear, that there are still too many people on the train, Police came in and cleared the train from passengers without their own seat. After more than one hour the ICE went on....
I absolutely agree that the seats on these trains could be better. In fact, VIA Rail Canada uses the same seats that are used in 1st class on these trains in their economy class. That said, they are still better than the 1st class on ICE 4, which I found absolutely dreadful when on a 5 hour Mannheim to Berlin segment. Thankfully I only paid 64 Euros for a first class Paris to Berlin ticket, so I guess it wasn't all that bad. I did find the ICE 2 to be quite comfortable though.
Nice Video, but be careful: At 11:20 you noticed, that the ICE 4 is also designed for a topspeed of 320km/h. That is wrong. The ICE 4 only reaches 250km(h (it is planned to add another powercar to increase to 265 km/h)
A city iconic for all things automobiles and they still have generous allowance for all manner of trains and public transit. Detroit and Cleavland could have been the same way. This German city is a shining example of coexistence while those two American cities lose it all and rot into oblivion.
@@burgerpommes2001 in bigger cities the public transport is Generally better than smaller cities. Berlin, Munich and Hamburg all have very good public transport.
I really like the Velaro, it is now the only possibility to find a non-refurbished ICE 3 (yes, it is officially an ICE 3) with guarantee, the old first class seats are so much better! I frequently travel between Köln and Mannheim, and there are more and more refurbished ICE 3's, which are a disappointment in terms of seating... My advice would be to buy DB tickets in advance. When I go to France, I usually find tickets to Paris (from Mannheim, 3 hour trip) for about 40 euros in first class, I just book in advance. The Flexpreis is way too expensive and barely brings an average traveler an advantage (only the DB lounge and a possibility to use any train of the day, which is usually useless for a traveler with a set plan).

Since when lounge access is not included with a first class ticket?
I do agree with you that it is disappointing that food and drink are not included in a first class ticket. Other railways include this. Also; the lack of meals or even drinks make first class seem to lack value, especially when one considers that 2nd class is perfectly comfortable and much cheaper
Great review. Did you prefer these ICE D trains or the Eurostar e320 one? And one little thing to add: ICE Velaro D runs only France Germany for now (as well as some fully German services), the Germany to Belgium or Germany to the Netherlands are still ran by the ICE 3M.
I really like the Velaro D, its seats are still quite comfortable, especially compared with the ICE 4 (412) which don't even recline... unfortunately DB seats on ICEs seem to get more and more uncomfortable... Especially on ICs there has been a huge downgrade from the old seats to the refurbished seats and especially to the IC2
Haha, having the Mercedes-Benz emblem on the roof in the city housing the headquarters of the company is not ironic. It makes sense. Ironic would be something that seems opposite of what makes sense. Like having the emblem of BMW in Stuttgart. Hope it helps.
If you consider cars being a hard competitor to Deutsche Bahn, the Mercedes Star as a Symbol of road traffic on the highest point of a cathedral of rail traffic at least seems to be contradictive.
Never travelled in ICE train...though I have travelled in other type of trains to Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt few times. The train is crowded, if the video was made in september 2020 during this Corona times?!
Fun fact: After DB noticed, that their new and slow, incredibly energy-efficient ICE 4 is not a solution for high speed transport, they ordered a new generation of substantially faster ICE trains some weeks ago: 30 Siemens Velaro D trains.
Does someone know if the ICE 4 rides on the Köln-Berlin track ? Seems likely. My father and I are planning a trip to Warschau. Is Liege-Koln-Berlin-Warschau.
I remember watching a documentary from HR Fernsehen about the Frankfurt Paris service, and First Class passengers received complimentary food and drink in First Class on that ICE. I wonder if the service was downgraded, or it is only available on the Frankfurt services? Must do this route again at some point; merci! :)
To the author: it's not at all ironic that Mercedes-Benz has the rotating logo on top of the train station as only in America Henry Ford distroyed the passenger trains in Michigan and the sorounding states, in other parts of the world the industries worked together in a mix of solutions for all people as they were not only interested in money, like God doesn't provide enough. ;)) Other people see other value besides money. So Bravo Stuttgart, Bravo Mercedes, Bravo Germany, Bravo Europe !!!
Those seats look like a rundown version of the Railjet ones. Austria is lucky in that there are fewer passengers, so the product holds up better overtime. Also those headrests on ICE trains in first always look so droopy and tired.
The little plastic thing looks like an ash tray, from the days when people were allowed to smoke on trains. However, a plastic ashtray would melt.... maybe it's for sweet wrappers.
@@lzh4950 Mercedes owns the Brand-Name "Maybach". The Maybach Motorworks, which built the propulsion for the famous "Fliegender Hamburger" DMUs in the 1930s has been merged with MTU already in the 1960s, which is owned by Rolls-Royce Power today. So Mercedes-Benz has not been related to rail industry, since they sold the train manufacturer "Adtranz" to Bombardier in 2001.
Oh wow, tu as vraiment fait ta recherche des trains ICE. Je suis impressionné, c'est bien compliqué 😄 DB a totalement foutu le bordel avec leur système de désignation. Ils auraient pu juste continuer à compter les séries normalement. 😅
As you can see on 8:11 the coach is a "Ruhebereich" - "quite zone" in english. The partition makes the car more quite in the middle, where you usually hear the noise from more passengers like on the ends of the cars.
Could top speeds in Germany be restricted by outdated infrastructure? Because that is a major issue on British railways, where the infrastructure dates back to the mid-19th century and the trains can't travel faster than 200km/h as a result
On that route trains rech 250 kph twice - once over a distance of about 50 km between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, where even 280 is possible and once between Baden Baden and Appenweier (30 km). But of course 320 kph over 400 km is much more impressive. One point is, that Germanys southern regions are quite mountainous, so building hispeed routes is quite expensive. Another is, that distances between stops are shorter than in France, since in Germany is a federal country with several strong regional centers. Long distance railway is not orientated towards the capital, but between several economic centers of gravity.
BR is not an officially classificstion for locomotives and self propelled trains. Thisxakrinym is used by midel railroaders and buffer kissers and another Railfans. DB himself and the politic are not using this akronym for "Baureihe*" in his both papers and files. * built series.

I've taken the trip from Paris to Mannheim, DE a lot. Its always cheaper flying into CDG from Dallas, Texas and taking DB than flying into FRA. Interestingly, I've seen the Bundespolizei arrest people everytime. Are TVG trains nicer? I think my family would disown me if I took a french train 😂.

He meant iconic, is not a native English speaker.
Those seats look like a rundown version of the Railjet ones. Austria is lucky in that there are fewer passengers, so the product holds up better overtime. Also those headrests on ICE trains in first always look so droopy and tired.
But they are comfy as fuck
The seating is good but nothing can beat a TGV seat
I have an idea for a trip report, the train from Bergen to Oslo? It's a really scenic ride going from sea level to over 3500 feet above sea level!
I love Stuttgart
Hi, nice video! What are your top ten high speed trains in terms of overall experience (comfort, speed etc) in Europe?
Omg are those trains
yes
The little plastic thing looks like an ash tray, from the days when people were allowed to smoke on trains. However, a plastic ashtray would melt.... maybe it's for sweet wrappers.
It's not made from plastic, it's made from gray cast iron.
I love this train at 3:04
1:03 You wrote "how ironic" when you should've written "how fitting".
Isn't it a bit ironic, that the icon of a carmaker tops a train station?
Definitely ironic
@@outdoorolli5754 Maybach (which is owned by Mercedes) did make diesel engines for locomotives though I think
Je suis impressionné, c'est bien compliqué 😄
DB a totalement foutu le bordel avec leur système de désignation. Ils auraient pu juste continuer à compter les séries normalement. 😅
The Little Trigger is to put your Waste
Why do we have partition at 8:22 when it looks like the same coach? Is it some sort of silence zone?
As you can see on 8:11 the coach is a "Ruhebereich" - "quite zone" in english. The partition makes the car more quite in the middle, where you usually hear the noise from more passengers like on the ends of the cars.
Stuttgart Hbf is still a big mess, now worse then in 2020. It is so difficult to reach and even more to navigate through.
I hope California purchases either ICE or TGV high speed train sets
Velaro seems to be the winner. Siemens already has production in California
Could top speeds in Germany be restricted by outdated infrastructure? Because that is a major issue on British railways, where the infrastructure dates back to the mid-19th century and the trains can't travel faster than 200km/h as a result
There are Top Speeds in Germany, just not in that route. The Infra is not that old, but also outdated
Nice video, as allways!!! One question. The sncf 4711. Is this locomotive used as a Thalys???
if you buy ticket in advance, you pay 40 Euro/2nd class or 50 Euro/1st class, both incl. seat reservation. Thats not much.
Is there DB or SNCF staff on the French side on the train ?
both
BR is not an officially classificstion for locomotives and self propelled trains. Thisxakrinym is used by midel railroaders and buffer kissers and another Railfans. DB himself and the politic are not using this akronym for "Baureihe*" in his both papers and files.
* built series.
good job video in germany love train
At 8:27 you wrote that the fastest trip is 1hr50 - which route are you referring to here?
Love your videos, this one was so interesting for me as I'm very familiar with all the stops on this route, and would like to try this one
