If you lose the latter, you'll just be sent back home without having voted. Simple as that. Why should the U.S be any different? (Edit: I should probably clarify that the 'voter pass' is not a piece of paper that allows you to vote in every election. If you are a Dutch citizen, you get one for each election by mail. It basically summons you to the polling station, although you're not legally obligated to vote. It's just an extra measure to prevent someone with a forged passport from voting.)
How hard is it to get ID there though? Here in the US, if your birth certificate and your social security card gets lost (for example, maybe a house fire), it's a hard process to get them back and they're required for an ID. You have to take time off work to go down to the SOS for pretty much a whole day and hope they give you another one. Not to mention for those in poverty, some states charge a lot for an ID or Drivers License. Voter ID isn't the problem, the lack of access to it is. If we removed all of these barriers to get a voter ID card, they wouldn't be remotely problematic. The problem is, the politicians fighting for Voter ID here already know this, which is why they aren't also fighting to remove these barriers. I got my ID at 18, it took 2 months just to get all the things I needed together for it, and I was lucky enough at the time to have the time to go do all this stuff. Not everybody does.

The majority of these things reek of white privilege--not the cohort that's affected by voter ID laws. Some of these items, like applying for SNAP and getting COVID-19 vaccines, actually do not require ID. And requiring ID for things like buying firearms and boarding planes is about safety. Requiring ID for things like cashing lottery tickets or getting credit cards is about fraud. Requiring ID for voting is about nothing but voter suppression, and lawmakers are supposed to maintain and expand our rights. That's their job. They're not supposed to encourage sales of firearms or furniture rentals. That's unrelated, so ID requirements for things like that is not a conflict. You have to consider the reason for the ID policy.
@@nycp1969 Unfortunately your comment is filled with so much contradiction. You cite safety as the reason for requiring ID for buying firearms and boarding planes, but couldn't you argue the same for elections? Wouldn't unfair elections be a threat to our safety? As a matter of fact, there is more evidence of voter fraud (no matter how small-scale) than there is evidence that requiring ID to vote = "voter suppression." I also believe it's racist to assume that black people are too stupid to figure out how to get IDs, or that they all vote Democrat.
@@GIJew Actually, I highlighted it that way to emphasize that our elections are very secure and not rife with fraud. Recognizing the outsize negative impact on a certain group does not imply a judgment on their cognitive abilities. It's a comment on their oppression and an encouragement to be an upstander. And the "colorblind" rationale is the most racist position possible.

Voter turnout is highly correlated with income and education (at least some education and basic income). People that are so far outside society and in poverty to the point they don’t afford any form of ID probably don’t vote at all anyways because they’ve got bigger issues to focus on, or probably don’t even follow the news/know that there is an election. These people obviously deserve support and aid to pull themselves up via government programs, more jobs and more community volunteering. But requiring identification to vote should not be controversial at all, doesn’t have to be a photo ID (even if like probably 95-99% of current voters have that). You could show your social security number, show a birth certificate or any other form of verifiable document to prove your identity - or bring a relative or partner to vouch for you. This is how it’s done in almost every country in the world - even significantly more liberal and progressive countries in Western Europe that all require identification to vote.

@Resident Alien You do need an ID to do just about anything other than walk around and breath. Not sure about breathing, It's just not a law that you must have one. there is little else one can do that doesn't require some form of identification. No one in this Country has any trouble getting an ID if they don't already have one, and are legal citizens.
It's funny how they say all those things, being an Indian Citizen which is THE largest democracy in the world, may have a growing economy but the still compared to USA the literacy rate is down by a whooping 25% (74% India | 99% USA), the difference in the average quality of life is significantly huge (the people you call underprivileged in US are more well off that 50% of the Indian population easily which is not a small number by any means). And even then with a population of over 1.35 Billion even the poorest of the poor are required to show a PHOTO ID when voting, having a Voter ID just makes the process a lot faster as it basically skips the verification process which as you can see in a population this large is very much needed. Also a PHOTO ID even in USA is required for almost everything, to get a phone, to open a bank account, to get a job, to get a house, to get a Gun (which i must say is also one of the RIGHTS afforded to the citizens), to get alcohol basically anything to a functioning member of the society and if you are not that maybe you shouldn't be allowed to vote, just like felons are stripped of their right to vote ( I might not be entirely accurate here ) even when they are legal citizen of the Country. Also to "All Americans have should be allowed to VOTE" - how do you tell if a person is american or not, on that account i personally know people in the states who have voted while being a tourist there and some who have been voting even while being a foreign exchange student, there goes the statistics of not much voter fraud argument down the drain, if you don't know who's voting how can you give any valid/well supported statistics on it. Let's take an example, you have a bank account, one day you decide to withdraw some money so you go to the bank and ask them for your money, they would ask you for some identification so that no bank fraud occurs, now if suddenly some person starts to demand it saying he doesn't have the ID or he lost it, should the bank just trust him and give him the money because they have had no such frauds (identified) in the recent years or ever. I'll let you answer that. Please don't be close minded to what just the media tells you open your mind and think for yourself a little, and you might just arrive at the answer yourself, or do some research, never make opinions on whim, those opinions will mostly work against you. Right to Vote is not a small thing you just give people, in US's case it's the right to decide who would manage one the most powerful countries in the world (whose decisions tend to impact a lot of countries in the world). It's not JUST a RIGHT it's a RESPONSIBILITY so please be RESPONSIBLE.
3:06 - this guy is full of crap! Plain and simple! You NEED to supply a government issued ID, as well as your birth certificate, and other forms of paperwork to apply for an absentee ballot! I've had to do it, so have my parents and my great-grandmother as she got older. If you go online you can see all the information you need to have to get an absentee ballot!
In my country, the Netherlands, you need passport, identification card or driver's license to vote, combined with a voterpass that is send by postal service. Before you can vote, officials check your voterpass and ID, and they compare your ID with your face, to establish that you are, who you say you are. This way we make sure people can't vote twice or that people vote on behalf of someone else without proper authorization. If you want someone to vote on behalf of you, we have a proper procedure for that. The voting process is arranged like this in most European democracies. It prevents fraud and I wouldn't want to have it any other way. Voter fraud destroys democracy from the inside and here in Europe, we think democracy is too important to let that happen. To me as a European, it is hard to imagine why this would be a debate at all in the USA.
The fact that a substantial portion of the population doesn't have ID is the real problem and not that the government asks people to identify. ID should be free and a must
But, of the population that is legally entitled to vote by our laws.. Nearly 100% have valid photo ID. The Significant portion of the population which doesn't have valid ID are not legally allowed to vote. So the argument is moot.
🗳According to the new poll, which was published Wednesday, an overwhelming majority of voters-74 percent-support voter ID requirements. Importantly, minority voters, the ones Democrats claim are most affected by the laws, are strongly supportive.
A substantial part of the people don’t have an ID? How are they buying alcohol, driving a car, flying on a plane, renting an apartment, buying a house, etc..? This is not a talking point. Almost nobody is most concerned with getting an ID because of voting. They are concerned with all the other things associated with having an ID. Has anybody ever met anybody without an ID and was told by the individual without the ID that their primary concern was not being able to vote? Um no. This is ridiculous to even be talking about this nonsense.
The problem is not presenting existing I.D. The problem is republicans are trying to create new barriers to discourage voting. Things like changing voting hours, limiting places and locations where people can vote. Creating systems that allow long lines hoping the disabled and weak would get off the line and be discouraged to vote. A person cannot even hand a bottle of water to an elderly person who is waiting on line to vote. Republicans consistently come up with a litany of nonsensical policies aimed at suppressing the vote

there is so many things you need to show an id for. open a bank. stay at a hotel. rent a car. fly on a plane. buy tobacco or alcohol. buy a house. rent an apartment. buy a gun. i just dont get it. how many people supposedly don't have an id?
Having an ID is required to: drive a car, buy alcohol, open a bank account, fly, obtain a job, apply for welfare, get married, get a cell phone plan, buy certain over the counter medication and much more... Not having an ID is a bigger problem than just not being able to vote. If you truly want to help people, then help them get IDs. If you want to undermine the integrity of our elections, then don't require people to verify their identities prior to voting...
The answer is no. If you are not responsible enough to Simply have the required form of photo ID. Then chances are you don't understand enough about candidates and how to vote. Have the ID or don't vote.
What you're saying completely does not make sense and in no reality does "simply" having photo ID indicates knowing who the candidates are. Also, suggesting "have the ID or don't vote" simply goes against what America stands for as a democracy where EVERYONE has the right to vote.
The same people who don't want Voter ID laws were the same people who wanted you to show a Vaccine Card to participate in society during the COVID "pandemic"..
With the comments being about 95% in favor of presenting ID to vote, please go to the ballot box this November to make sure we practice what we preach. Show your ID and vote "Right"....of course!
The fact that an ID is required to get a gun completely debunks the argument against Voter ID. Being able to purchase and own a firearm is a right just like voting, so why is it okay for purchasing guns but not securing and ensuring your vote counts?
People who wants gun will get ID cause they wanted. Most people doesn't have interest in vote. And if the ID they have to get it then they don't want to vote They will think ' Aha Politicians are corrupted anyway Nothing will change my life' and don't just vote.
@@magic90015 yeah, and if you want to vote, you should get an ID. I don’t see an issue with it. An ID protects your vote. It ensures it is you voting for you, and not someone else.
My other question would be why need another ID to vote? Let people use their driver license but provide the other ID as an alternative if the voter can't get a drivers license. Also the voter ID card if needed should be paid for by tax payer dollars and should be free. People shouldn't have to pay a dime to vote. It's their right as a citizen.
The whole point is to prevent criminals and illegals from voting. Saying that legal minorities cannot get voter ID even though it's not a difficult process literally implies that they're all uneducated. It's also a red herring fallacy that diverts people from the problem of criminal and illegal voting.
Only in America do you need ID for practically everything BUT the most important decision you can make as an adult: who should be president. Of course, we know the real reason why they basically want people with NO documentation to be able to vote. I mean, what kind of grown person doesn't even have an ID? How are they even legally driving on the road?
We have been using voter ID in Puerto (third world) Rico for many years with no problems. Why it can´t be done in the most developed country in the world???
I don't understand this. How can any person live in N. America and not have any form of identification. Unless they live in a forest off the grid. Then they wouldn't want to vote anyways.
Top-ranking countries on the democracy index like Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, etc. require photo identification. How come if it is anti-democratic?
The process with voting IDs are simple. I should first off point out that you are basically required as a citizen to have an ID. They are cheap to get printed. All the polling worker wants to do is verify that you are who you say you are with the picture, and enter your first and last name to verify that you are registered to vote(which is free). They can then click a button with your info selected to print your ballot. The problem here is that people are claiming that it somehow is oppressive when in actuality it isn't. If you can't present your valid identification, chances are that you aren't even registered to vote. Alternatively, you can submit a provisional ballot which will be processed manually. Chances are that it won't be counted unless EVERYTHING else is in order.
The requirement of photo identification should NOT be controversial and is NOT a burden. People use identification cards or driver's licenses to sign up for social services, get housing-whether public housing, rentals anywhere or home purchases, medical practitioners, labs and diagnostics, registration of every type, purchase a box store card, attend theatres or restaurants to prove they are within the age prescribed for a discount, purchase mobile phones, have a bank account, purchase alcohol, etc., etc. Requiring identification is common in this day and age. What's the issue?
I think for anything important like this/driving/tobacco/alcohol/firearm it should be required. Hell even some online bitcoin websites require an ID and various verification methods to use it. Paypal requires verification. So many things require some form of ID to use and all of a sudden this one is just unfair?
How do these people start a job, rent a flat, apply for a drivers license or in a certain age range even buy alcohol or visit a club? How do they enter another country? How do they return to their country? Why would an ID be difficult to access?
Voter ID laws are just as bad as requiring ID to buy Beer and weed which no one has a problem showing, therefore showing ID to vote shouldnt be a problem either.
Looking at the heated dbates from a distance ( Austria) I fail to grasp hwy having an ID to prove ones identity is such a politicial issue. In Vienna ahead of the elections I can either choose to vote by mail ballet or in person. Ballets sent to me have a individual identification signature in it, so it cannot be replicated or misused otherwise. In person voting takes not more then 5 minutes - including possible waiting - and it is always on a sunday , people rather spend a few minutes of their free time on a sunday then to take unpaid leave on a work day, taking part in an essential democratic process should not cost me! In person voting needs an ID, otherwise you cannot place your vote. Mail ballots are only sent to registred individuals, meaning regsistered in the national data base under the control of the ministry of interior - which is non political ecxept for the lead secretary. Voter fraud in Austria: never heard of it, factually not possible. R
I live in Indiana, the reddest state in the Midwest, and here all you need to get a license is a birth certificate (there are a lot of alternatives to this, obviously), proof of SSN, and two proofs of address. And that is only if you’re getting a license for the first time or moving in from another state. If you had a license before, you just need to keep your address current. Also IDs are free for those over 18 and BMV branches open at extended hours both on and before Election Day, with credential transactions being the only transactions allowed. We also have early in-person voting and they’re open on Saturdays. If you still can’t vote you just don’t want to.
This whole conversation baffles me i live in Germany and here you need to carry a ID with you if you are over 18 only expeption is your own house/property. If police asks you for your ID and you can't prove that you are who you state you are they will take you to the police station and try to figure out who you are and won't let you go until you or they can prove it. To anyone who thinks that's not true, actually it is i witnessed it 3 times now. I have never heard anyone here complaining that they can't get an ID or think it's racist. And believe me Germany has one of the slowest bureaucracies in the world. And every time there is a election you get sent a letter (if you are elegible to vote) stating where you HAVE to go to vote (you are not allowed to vote anywhere else) and there you have to give them said letter + your ID.
Let's see...you need ID to buy alcohol, nicotine, weed and guns. You also need an ID to buy a car, a house, insurance, fishing tags, hunting tags and last but not least, you need ID to prove that you're eligible to work in this country. So its only fair to require ID to vote. As long as you're a legal citizen with nothing to hide then it shouldn't be a problem. Anyone that's against the voter ID law either has something to hide or they were benefitting from not having one before
If we don't have photo voter ID laws. Maybe the question should be, what happens I show up at my polling center only to find out someone has used my name and voted for me?
Every eligible citizen when ID is not required means just anyone who is in the country and able to got to a polling station then ? Yep, couldn't be a problem with the surge in immigration, after all, if everyone who is able to vote is a citizen, then giving them the ability to vote will help make them citizens
It's strange that some people don't have a fucking Identification. No I.D no goddamn vote period. If you don't drive get a non-drivers license or is that also too hard.
Before voter photo ID, we need to know how many illegal immigrants live in America. MIT estimates 22 million illegal immigrants. Plus an open border policy at about 1 million new illegal immigrants per year.
If Democrats and media would shut up about voter id being racist and disenfranchising voters, and instead allowed people to look at this with common sense, this wouldn't even have been an issue...
Voting is our most fundamental right in a democracy. Imagine if a politician proposed that in order to have 1st or 2nd amendment rights you must legally possess a government issued ID that requires renewal every few years and must present any time anyone asked for it to prove who you are when having a conversation in public or any time you have a firearm in your home. Could you imagine how fast everyone complaining about voter fraud (that doesn’t actually happen) would cry that it was socialism or communism? The education system has fed middle class white america a dream that they cannot wake up from and it has turned into a nightmare for everyone else.. look at how desperate these people are to retain power yet these same people will look people of color in the face and expect them to not talk about slavery so they can pretend it will go away quietly!

You need an ID to sign up for government assistance.
We shouldn’t oppose voter ID based on wishful thinking. “I’m sure it’s rare, I’m sure people won’t abuse it, I’m sure all people do the right thing in all circumstances.”

I really don't think the people without ID even vote.
As a Canadian, i will be heading to a swing state with no voter ID laws and voting for Trump.
Should the type of people who don't have an ID or can't keep up with an ID really be voting?
I’m am from Mexico and is baffling the idea of voting without a proper ID as it is here.
In Texas, you need your birth certificate to get your ID, but you need your ID to get your birth certificate.
In South Africa we must show our ID cards. Why is this controversial? Only citizens and people of age should get to vote.
How do these people start a job, rent a flat, apply for a drivers license or in a certain age range even buy alcohol or visit a club? How do they enter another country? How do they return to their country? Why would an ID be difficult to access?
wtf, how do you make sure people don't vote more than once then?
“Substantial portion of the population doesn’t have an I.D” yeah those are called children.
This basically this is saying every citizen with an ID has the right to vote.
We should eliminate ID requirements for purchasing weapons too. Black folks should have the same right to protect themselves.
Every eligible citizen when ID is not required means just anyone who is in the country and able to got to a polling station then ? Yep, couldn't be a problem with the surge in immigration, after all, if everyone who is able to vote is a citizen, then giving them the ability to vote will help make them citizens
Voting is a right. It's basically a poll tax. UNLESS we get free ID's It's unconditional.
All the voter id law is saying is. “Show us proof that you are who you claim to be.”
The education system has fed middle class white america a dream that they cannot wake up from and it has turned into a nightmare for everyone else.. look at how desperate these people are to retain power yet these same people will look people of color in the face and expect them to not talk about slavery so they can pretend it will go away quietly!
you do need an ID to purchase a firearm. that literally throws your entire argument out the window
@@skylertremblay3395 what's funny is that since you responded this, specifically to an argument that I am not even making, it just lets me know that this actually snuck in past ignorance and struck a chord in that peanut sized brain.
I know you need an id to buy a firearm, I have plenty... if I wanted to draw a comparison to showing an id to purchasing a firearm, like you so idiotically pointed out, I would have equated that to having toi show an id register to vote...which you actually do not need, btw.
side note: you cannot LITERALLY throw an argument out of a window... that's a figure of speech.
Not only should voter id be compulsory the whole postal voting system system needs overhauled to prevent voting along tribal cultural and religious lines
Honestly, if you are not capable of a simple task as obtaining an ID, you shouldn't be voting anyway.
