    One more point. There is a violin case and travel bag with which a violin can fit into carry on specifications. Its ridiculously expensive but if you can afford it its nice. Called a Trinity travel kit for violin. I wish I could afford it.

    Excellent video! It’s so hard to travel with instruments!

    Hi Alice - a great post with some good ideas. Just to add to your bonus tip of the coat closet…. I know it’s expensive but if you have a first class ticket many crews are more willing to accommodate a violin in the closet. No guarantees of course. I have a 5-string mezzo violin so it’s about the size of a viola. Even though its expensive it isn’t as bad as cello players who often have to book a seat for their instrument. Keep up,the great posts. Thanks!

      As a luthier, I'm curious - what's a mezzo violin? C, G, D, A, + E?

      Mezzo Forte is a brand of carbon fiber instruments! I have a video reviewing a few of them on my channel. They make acoustic and acoustic/electric instruments.

      @@ChronicallyMusical Ah okay! I was wondering since I'd not heard of them before and it sounds like a style/something in the family of the violin rather than a maker :)

    I'm going to work in Alaska for the summer, and want to bring my violin so I can preform. SO nervous about traveling for three connecting flights.

    Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought you said you travel with a cello and that you can store in the overhead bin. Even my violin case does not fit into the required size limits for carry on luggage. Do you have a foldable electric cello?

      Haha! Thanks for clarifying on my behalf! I've heard of a bass with a removable neck but I didn't know that you could do that with a cello.

    Any advice for staying in hotels with an instrument? I will be traveling in a few weeks and I may have some places to go where I can’t take my violin with me.

    • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  2 роки тому

      This is definitely a something I can address in future videos, but in general I try to keep my instrument either in a close or under the bed when staying at a hotel, JUST in case. You can also likely leave it at the front desk if you'd rather have someone monitor it while you're gone!

      Unfortunately I'm not experienced with this, but I'm guessing you would have to treat that as you would a checked bag.

    0:45, chronic illness, it's anxiety? I personally have Ankylosing Spondylitis (extremely bad, my spine is fusing two vertebrae together and anxiety is almost nothing compared to that) and I had to stand for 2 hours every 1 hour for 14 hours.... however: anxiety which I have alongside depression I could sit in my chair, but albeit, I had some diazepam 5mg x 2 to have to ease the issue. People looked over at me like I was a terrorist when I was standing up for more than 10 minutes and Christ Almighty did that *add* to my anxiety .....!!!
    And 7:49 - If you have a bullet-proof Musafia case like me (pllluuuuggggggggg) it'll be fine haha. But yes, standard cases, no. I had a cheap-ish instrument crushed due to travelling with a bad case. If you travel with an instrument worth thousands of dollars, and/or you have a strong connection with that particular instrument, then treat it like a person and buy a seat from her/him!!!
    I even got two meals because I bought two seats haha!
    Also, 5:42 .... how does your anxiety manifest? Are you just worried about your instrument..?? Because that's perfectly normal. My anxiety is clinical. I could receive $1000 dollars on a Thursday, get a job promotion, be honoured with receiving a Stradivarius, the perfect girlfriend and a mansion.. yet I still get clinical anxiety because it's a chemical imbalance. So I hope you count your blessings.Worrying about an instrument [and *that's it* ! ] is honestly nothing compared to *clinical anxiety* which requires *medication* and sometimes a week or more in hospital under observation, for seemingly no reason.
    Anxiety vs. worrying is a very real set of different things and shouldn't be taken lightly. I had to jump through so many hoops to "prove" I have clinical anxiety which manifests as involuntary shakes, head/neck spasms, something called "impending doom" ...and everything can be going just swell in your life. It's very *very* serious and not just worry over an object. I share your pain over the wellbeing and safety of an object, but if I had to choose between destroying my viola or getting rid of my viola, I would get rid of my viola in a heartbeat.. I've been through so much pain. I've even contemplated suicide irrationally. I hope you understand. Worry and anxiety (clinical) is very different, and the word shouldn't just be thrown around.

    • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  3 роки тому +2

      My deepest apologies if my flippant use of the word insulted you or minimized your experience in any way. That was not my intention at all. I know that personally I experience both anxiety AND worry (and I do try to bring humor to most of my experiences as a coping mechanism which I imagine can come across as insensitive unintentionally), though I have not been diagnosed with any clinical anxiety issues. I’m sorry you’ve had so much pain and struggle, I imagine it can be debilitating and traumatic for you. Thank you for the feedback. I genuinely was just trying to be helpful and offer some good suggestions for traveling with an instrument and did not at all mean to be insensitive. The chronic illnesses I have (I explain these in a lot of detail in other videos on my channel!) are undifferentiated connective tissue disease and inflammatory bowel disease. I did not mean to imply that my chronic illness is anxiety, and I will have to be more clear next time! Sorry about that!

      @@ChronicallyMusical Thank you for not replying with hate (as many UA-camrs do), it's very refreshing especially when one has a valid point. Well, I believe my points are valid.
      I hope you have medication and a lifestyle that can ease your conditions as well. Quality of life is the most important thing for any of us! Stay safe!
