Thank you Danielle and team for all the work you do, Elementary now, Elementary forever!
@@coldestbeer . Yes ElementaryOS targets the non computer savvy community but that's all right. If it gets people into open source then I think that's great. Folks have to start somewhere and this is a good start. It's why I love Linux. There's something for everybody and liberates people from the chains of MS and Mac.
@jeffseely86 I'm not against it, my first archlinux os was manjaro. But it made me realize how i couldn't fix things when it broke, sometimes you've to be thrown in semi-deep water to learn how to swim.
That advice on virt-manager graphic issues is really appreciated. I had that incorrect mouse position issue while trying to install NixOS Gnome edition
Elementary OS is just the type of thing that can be a heavy weapon in guiding people into FOSS. Why would I buy a Mac when I can have this for free? They've made it simple and elegant and this is just the type of thing I could give friends and family that are not computer people. No viruses, no money (or very little), and no instability. Perfect! And the code text editor is gorgeous.
Four things to install/replace: Install Pantheon Tweaks, Install Synaptic Replace Pantheon Files with Nemo Replace Pantheon Terminal with GNOME Terminal. Now you have reasonably sane defaults in EOS.
Way before I bought my first Apple product, the MacBook Air M1, I tried Elementary 4 and 5. It was extremely buggy on my AMD systems. Which was a shame because Pantheon was a beautiful desktop.
Personally I think Tiger had a lot more skeumorphism with the brushed metal and other realistic details, Pantheon reminds me a lot more of TouchWiz on old Samsung phones with Android Jellybean or KitKat
Tried it yesterday, never again. The Bluetooth was disabled by default, no way to switch between GPUs, very old kernel, lack of flatpaks, a lot of missing programs. No way to tweak the default interface(fonts, icons, themes, login page etc). So they took out the customization options of Linux distros and all the software that they don't endorse(paid mostly).
You need the third party tool Pantheon Tweaks to configure the desktop. Its locked down by default so if you want to enable the Ubuntu repos, you can do it through Synaptic.
@@NormanF62 they don't make it easier to add a ppa either. to have to install a new app that looks old just to be able to install some more software seems a little restrictive to me. This is infuriating when you have a large desktop screen and the newer screens come with touch controls. it doesn't do anything other than looking nice.
Yep if you install the Nvidia drivers on some laptops you lose your WiFi. I ran Elementary on an all AMD laptop with a AMD CPU & Radeon GPU and an Intel machine with no dedicated GPU and I had no real issues but on a couple machines with Nvidia GPUs it was always the same you could have Wifi or GPU drivers but not both. Godd video mate! For some reason I cannot seem to install the runtime updates. I click update, it does it´s thing and immediatly afterwards it automatically checks for updates and says I should update again. Other than that it seems to be runing just like 6.0.
Elementary OS could have been compared with something similar. For me it is Pop OS. They even look alike. But you know what? Pop OS is a front-runner. It has all that tiling capabilities, kind of rofi thing and nice fira fonts. Elementary OS lags behind.
I tried out elementary OS for the first time yesterday in a VM. It was so atrociously bad, I gave up only a few minutes in. Some of the design choices utterly baffled me, like the awful font choice and the window control placement.
There is no paywall, in that you can choose to pay what you wish, anywhere from literally $0 to $1000 or higher if you were so inclined. But you're not forced to pay for it.

All of this is voluntary, and compared to expensive paid for operating systems, where you will pay money for actually decent support, lots of linux devs will happily help a user sort out issues if they can. But so many computer users tend to act like they're entitled to instant answers and always free support. I get that the FOSS movement developed with openness and freedom in mind, but free doesn't always mean free of financial cost.
It's all behind the scenes. Unlike every other distro that you know, which just comes add features, changes stylesheet and fix bugs, elementary takes time to refine and discuss features. This refinement may not be visible to the user, but that is the point of it, to make the system seem like you can just forget it and not make you learn anything again because a button was moved here or there.
