Glad people are bringing attention to this case. I moved to Atlanta in 1979 as a child. It was such a horrifying time. We couldn't go an inch from our front yard. Mom was yelling for us to come back. If you lived through it changed you.

I remember this well. I was a child living there in the 70s. This was huge news all over the news in the South. Many of us werent allowed to go outside to play unsupervised.
At my old job I toured the prison in the 90s where Wayne Williams was ,he was there polishing the floor right in front of us.
The children's murders were likely pinned on Wayne Williams, a black man. Its widely believed the Klan was responsible. Seems like some dna on carpet fibers didnt match decades later or something also.
The current mayor is trying to re-open the investigation.
He was convicted of murdering 2 young adults. There were 30 including these and the missing children .
He is up for parole next year.

Living in Atlanta then, I remember feeling physically ill whenever a news flash came on, fearing it would be a story about another missing or murdered child. Though a young white woman back then, I lived in-town and remember the dread and anxiety we all felt, as well as the frustration that no progress was being made. I had black friends whose children were never allowed out without adult supervision. One white police officer I knew started crying and his knees buckled when a new victim was reported. Visitors to the city regardless of origin wondered and worried.
The evidence against Wayne Williams was almost all fiber and hair analysis, which was covered at length in the papers and local media. When the killings stopped after Williams's arrest, the entire city began--slowly--to breathe again. Williams was very intelligent and rather eccentric (characteristics I share) and everyone I knew struggled between relief that the murders had stopped and disbelief that anyone could have killed twenty-three children without more evidence.
It is amazing that this hasn't received more attention in the national sphere, and I'm glad that it is at last. But I do believe that Mr. Packer is mistaken in his assertion that no one outside of the children's families cared. The city was traumatized. Admittedly, my family and friends were empathetic enough to see the tragedy in human terms, but even the openly racist people I crossed paths with were appalled. Of course I've wondered over the years whether a similar string of child killings surfaced elsewhere afterwards, but I haven't gone looking for evidence. Like most of the rest of Atlanta, I needed to believe that the monster was contained.

I believe two were girls, one of whom was a good bit younger and the general speculation was that her murder was unrelated. The age of the kids--mostly young teens or almost teens--also led to speculation that this was a pedophile at work. And yes, of course we all suspected the Klan. The two biggest arguments against that were that white men in that area would have aroused suspicion and that Klansmen would have bragged about it. People also didn't want to say much about the possibility of pedophilia because gay men were also being abused and victimized regularly.

Not to mention all of those children were not found. This is a tragedy. God sits high and looks low. Trust me whoever killed these children WILL REAP with what they have sewn. One of the childrens' Mother was on The View with Mr. Packer and said that her daughter was among the victims. She was found tied to a damn tree with her lip and ear cut off. Wayne Williams is an innocent victim. He was feisty and sarcastic, but definitely not a murderer. The Atlanta Child Murders were committed by several different people, not a "serial killer." Wayne Williams was used as a scapegoat.
Remember the murders of 10 year old Earl Terrell and 12 year old Christopher Richardson? Shotgun shells were found beside their bodies, but their causes of death were "Undetermined." According to police, a "middle-aged white man with a southern drawl" called Earl Terrell's home to say he had Earl in Alabama and asked for $200 by Friday, but no more calls came. Incidentally, white men were always being spotted in Atlanta's black neighborhoods. They didn't look suspicious because they were dressed as salesmen, utility men, insurance men, repairmen, painters, lawn-care men, plumbers and policemen. The killer or killers may be black, but Wayne Williams is innocent.
Over half of the Atlanta Child Murder victims were killed with guns of different calibers, but neither Wayne Williams nor his father owned any guns, and no guns were found in their home. Incidentally, 14 year old Eric Middlebrooks was killed two weeks after he testified against three juveniles in a robbery case.
Just before Wayne Williams was arrested, District Attorney Lewis Slaton publicly announced they did not have enough evidence to arrest Wayne Williams, but the Federal Government pressured Lewis Slaton into issuing an arrest warrant anyway. The Government needs to exonerate Wayne Williams of these crimes.

"Williams was only convicted of two murders and the victims were adults...", one was a known martial artist, a low-level dealer who shook down other dealers for money and drugs, yet Williams was convicted of killing him. That victim was +6", nearly 200lbs and a known athlete. Williams is only 5'"7 and weighed 145lbs at the time of his arrest and was a considered a wimp, but somehow strangled the victim, threw the victim over a 4' bridge guardrail without stopping while his car was going 20+mph. The murders DIDN'T STOP. Get the book "The List" by Chet Dettlinger with Jeff Prugh, it ain't cheap but it was written by two investigators who were on the case who were shut out of the ATL/ACM task force when they protested Williams' innocence and had pertinent information about possible suspects who new the victims 'intimately'prior to Williams ever being considered a person of interest. Those same suspects had a prior history of child sex abuse and at least two would later be convicted of multiple child sex crimes after Williams was already in jail. One was an upper-middle-class caucasian who ran a child/male prostitution ring for which he was convicted. This same person had city contracts at the time of the murders. He was one of the few non-black contractors that the city gave carte blanche back in the New south period. There were, murders prior to the 'official' timeframe that was not included in the list of victims. Several of those victims were also adults at least one was a female, they all grew up in the same neighborhoods as the victims that were in the official list and were killed in almost the same fashion as those included in the list.

The Atlanta child murders were covered extensively by the national press and tv news media. Both day and night, for weeks, that was consistently and justifiably the top story. The APD worked tirelessly to solve this case wich resulted in the arrest of Williams, not for the child murders but for two adult males, he then became APD's chief suspect in the child murders based on the M.O. from the adult case.
An overwhelming amount of circumstantial evidence, nineteen sources of fiber and hair found on some of the child victims and in Williams' home matched. Later FBI DNA testing of Williams hair and hair found on one of the child victims resulted in odds of 130 to 1 against the hairs coming from anyone but Williams. Hair from Williams' dog were also matched with dog hairs found on the same victim with a 99% match. The FBI stated that the test results were significant but because the DNA profiles were not 100% matching the evidence was deemed inconclusive. The fact that the murders stopped after Williams' arrest should speak volumes regarding his guilt. There were even eyewitnesses who placed Williams with some of the victims before they disappeared. All this evidence pointed to Williams but no, KKK members drove into those neighborhoods, coaxed or forced black children into a car and then murdered them without anybody noticing?

    • @pristineparr7509
      @pristineparr7509 5 років тому

Dog hair evidence is psuedo science and DNA hair strands were not that advanced then. A white man was seen with some of these children before their deaths so claiming the KKK wasn't involved is unfactual.

I think that the issue of whether Wayne Williams did or did not murder those kids is exactly what this documentary is not about. Because of the publicity and media chaos this tragedy eventually got, the story of these children somehow took a backseat and overshadowed by conspiracy theories. This documentary I think focuses the light back on the children and their families which is why Packer seemed reluctant to bring up Williams in the first place. It's not about him. We saw how the government responded through curfews, which made sense in theory, but kind of backfired and shifted the blame on the parents for negligence instead of putting more effort in finding the murderer(s). We see how vulnerable people are often put at a disadvantage and blamed for things that are not even within their control. And I feel that that's what we should be more concerned about right now. Not who these monsters were. But those whose stories we lost sight of.

I never noticed that Hollywood doesn't put black people in movies. They're 13% of the population, so why aren't they at least 90% of the characters in movies?!?

This whole interview i was thinking, compare Get Out to Shutter Island. Make better movies and they will get awards. I understand the movement but c'mon.

when your message is inclusion, when in reality, the actors are exclusively black, you’re being disingenuous. It’s fine if you want to make a movie that only has black people. Nothing wrong with that.
But you’re actively segregating shit with labels like “black Hollywood.” are we maybe as a society, struggling between representation and segregation?

I see what you're trying to say, but you are dead wrong.
The idea is to work towards inclusivity through understanding and context, but in order to do so he has chosen to put real people into real situations about real life. Why would he star anyone else? As for his other films, they represent a challenge and a invitation to a new way of dealing with representation.

Shadow Fox it’s not inclusive if you’re by definition, making it exclusive to a specific race.
There’s nothing wrong with him doing this, either. Just stop calling it one thing, and claiming that you’re doing another.

@@HLVEYT That makes no sense. First of all, he is trying to bring light to a disenfranchised and ignored people, and by doing so he is including them into the mainstream. When a vast majority of Hollywood's output doesn't represent them, they have to work towards making it do so. You are approaching the problem from the wrong angle.
