That progress bar that slows down at the end reminds me of programmers making load screens, they speed it up until the last second and then you have to wait for it to actually load
This was genuinely such an interesting watch. It's always nice to hear someone talking about UA-cam analytics without being incredibly obnoxious about it.
The slowing down of the loading bar that MrBeast does is so strange. It falls into that gray area of things that aren't illegal, but feel just a little slimy. Even something like his thumbnails for example. People used to HATE clickbait, not only on UA-cam, but any website. Now, we're getting thumbnails where Jimmy is literally holding dynamite in his mouth. I didn't watch the video but I'm pretty sure that that never happens. So why is it okay to clickbait that? Because it's obvious that doesn't happen? Because it's MrBeast so we just accept it? Idk, I don't have a conclusion really, it's just interesting to think about.
Dude Perfect is pretty bad too. They cram a hundred products into every video and talk them up to their impressionable child audience but never specify they are sponsored.
MrBeast's videos are for extreme entertainment so a thumbnail that features an extreme version of something in such a cartoonish way just feels like a matter of style, simplicity and effectiveness to me. The thumbnails are clearly not meant to be fully accurate. It's not like they're, for example, putting a real, raw, image, but with a key part being completely changed. It's all made up to represent the video in an appealing way, just like the videos are highly polished. For example, when other people are challenged in videos, he puts himself on the thumbnail, simply because his face needs to be there and having just one face is more effective. The actual way in which the content happens is revealed in like 3 seconds and it matches like 80% of the expectations created by the title so it's not deceiving. At least, I'm saying this as someone that looks forward to every new MrBeast video, regardless of what it is, so it might be easier for me to look at the titles and thumbnails as mere "identities" for the video instead of literal promises. His last video is "World's Deadliest Obstacle Course". Like, that's obviously not LITERALLY the case, but does that really matter? That's more of an emotional trigger than a descriptive title, to lure you in to something that's actually cool beyond what's in the title, and it shows real obstacle courses so... is this wrong? Regarding the progress bar, yeah, it was unnecessary. At least, he seems to not do it anymore. Last time he did a progress bar, he kept the pacing, but removed the bar when the ad switched back to the video temporarily, which is fair, and probably has a similar effect without lying. I hope MrBeast doesn't get too comfortable with these types of things
@@smixqse Wow, I actually really appreciate how thoughtful your response was. I get what you're saying 100%, you could say no one is actually expecting people to die an the obstacle course, however, the thumbnail and title were made in such a way for a reason. They know the crazier a thumbnail and title, the more attention it will get. So it is still clickbait, but acceptable clickbait? idk. I guess the question is how far can you stretch the truth for it to still be considered acceptable. But like I said, no hate to you or Jimmy, just an interesting convo to have.
@@ZachyH That's indeed an interesting convo! Of course those things boost retention, click through rate, etc... but also, MrBeast's content is all about the emotional experience. You're not there for information, you're there to feel good. He "stretches" the content inside the video with sound effects, music, impact sentences... a bunch of things. He uses words like "exponentially", "deadliest", "biggest" or "physics-defying" inside the video where it doesn't make sense literally, but people don't seem to care about it, because they're immersed into the emotions that those words contribute to. Most people don't seem to mind the titles and thumbnails as well because while the content doesn't exactly match, the vibes certainly do. "World's Deadliest", "Most Dangerous"... those mean "extreme", and what MrBeast does feels extreme, so it's fine. "In 10 Minutes, This Room Will Explode" with a thumbnail where MrBeast has a TNT in his mouth? Well, in that video a room does explode, and the thumbnail means "extreme", "urgent", and "with high stakes", which are all feelings that the video evokes. "Ages 1 - 100 Decide Who Wins $250,000"? The 100 people didn't decide that exactly, even though the video includes a lot of decisions and ends with an actual final decision. The impact of decisions is still present, so it doesn't feel that relevant that they don't exactly decide who wins in one go. He might not deliver 100% on the content of the titles and thumbnails, but he delivers on the vibes and it all makes sense, so I guess that's why people don't mind it. Of course, he still has to have some amount of integrity for the content to work. I don't feel anxious for a contestant that might lose $800,000 if their reactions feel fake. If I'm interested in a video called Every Country In The World Fights For $250,000 solely because of the extremeness of having all (or most) countries of the world, he can't select like 10 countries and go with that. He has to fulfill the values that create the emotions, which is what makes MrBeast's content different from some clickbait content on UA-cam. Sometimes it's just to make you click, and the content is underwhelming. You don't feel satisfied. so uh i guess that's it and wow i typed out a lot

I actually found your channel like two days ago (and binged it), so I was looking up that site to see how much you made on your channel. I always love the “how much do UA-camrs make from the website” type videos both because I find it interesting and, at least in this case, I wanna see you thrive man. You’re a good guy and I want you to be able to support your family and stuff. Either way great video and have a good one!
God, I hate rotating thumbnails. I watch a video in my subbox (cause I don't go to youtube to search or get their recommended, cause the algorythm sucks) and then click the ones i want to watch. With rotating videos i always am like "Oh damn, new video" but then it's disappointment instead.
Really appreciate your honesty and clarity with showing your personal channel stats and revenue, this felt like I paid for a consultation on how to grow a UA-cam channel. I'd fully agree with the description: interesting!
Scott, Mr. Struggle. I dont normally comment but I'm insanely grateful for you showing how much you made on your vids! 99% of people wouldnt but its helpful to see how the platform is going.
on my many years on youtube, i don't think i have EVER seen a creator actually shown how much they made off a video, mad respect for your transparency scott 🙏
for the record im glad you're not dejected over the bison video's performance, as someone whos been watching your channels for years my favorite videos are the ones where you go on a little adventure because you have passion in your heart
Oh I love the idea of little description of the videos when you hover over them. Mostly because I hate that youtube acts like I was watching the video if I spend more than a microsecond pondering over the idea of watching it or just got distracted.
Ryan's videos are designed to look effortless, so it's funny to see how subtle the changes in his thumbnail are. Clearly something he puts a lot of thought into
11:01 I think I like the older version better for this. I think seeing your face in the thumbnail is better than blocking it off. Especially the eyes are good at grabbing attention to me
As someone who used to do UA-cam myself, I love getting current behind the scenes information on this kind of thing! Thanks for sharing your own experience with it too. I think the ABC testing is really cool, especially when I used to design multiple thumbnails, stick with one and just waste the others.
In defense of your 10/10 videos, i tend to put your videos in my watch later playlist because I WANT to watch them, but I end up losing track of them due to having a lot of channels I follow that provide content that appeals to me. a lot of the videos in my watch later are the kind of stuff that actively excites me, whereas your content is moreso stuff that I'm not aware of but the video gets me to enjoy the topic.
With the loading bar, it's pretty common for companies to do this practice. It goes fast in the beginning and slower at the end to keep you patient. You've probably seen this of you've ever downloaded a game, and the progress gets stuck at 99% 4:41
I think so. UA-cam cares a lot about watch time and retention so if they see people are “not fully engaged” it might fall to the wayside of the algorithm. But since so many channels have sponsors I would also think they programmed something around that. So maybe but probably yeah
Yes it lowers the average view duration. If you watch the entire video youtube tracks that as you watching 100%. Now lets say 10% of a video is sponsored and you skip. UA-cam will track that you only watched 90%. The more people that skip the sponsored segment the more of an effect it has on the average view percentage. Thats why the top UA-camrs like mrbeast do the sponsored parts during the challenge so that if you skip you're missing parts of the video.
@@willywillybumbum9851 In the past that also hurt the view duration or w/e metric(s) (SpiffingBrit did a video about how playback speed impacts video metrics), but of course YT is changing their algorithm all the time so who knows if it's still true or to what extent it's changed if it did change etc etc.
This was SO absorbing (lmao) - I love the “nerdy” behind-the-scenes vids. And you do a great job of walking the average viewer through the statistics and meanings behind different processes - if you wanted to do another few like these, more creator-focused vids, I’d tune in!!

It’s so funny that the master team behind Mr beast still hasn’t realized it’s jimmys face / brand recognition that gets people to click not his weird mannequin expression and photoshopped eyes. Like just have his face in the thumbnail, who tf decided ah yes the algorithm loves uncanny horror faces.
I actually like your thoughts on your past videos. I missed the Scavenger Hunt video and because you mentioned it, I'm going back and watching it. Pretty cool idea :) Love your work!!
I'm not a creator or even an in the weeds person for youtube but this was still so interesting!! thanks for talking through it all and showing the examples!
i hate the obsession w getting max views immediately bc i often times put off watching vids from some of my fav creators because im waiting til im ready to relax and have the time to give it my full attention, which sometimes takes a few days! it does not mean there is something wrong w the video!
This was a really interesting look behind the curtains. I don’t often think about all the work creators do behind the scenes to make a video perform better and how they work on me. Thanks for sharing!
I think a very important distinction that I assume the website has no idea of knowing is whether or not a given channel is getting above average UA-cam premium views (premium views earn you more), and whether or not the channel is in the Google preferred ads program. Google doesn't even tell the creator if they're in or what the requirements are, unless you're part of the partner Support Program... you just got to watch your analytics and hope you are in.
THANK YOU for the transparency. People treat numbers like they're intensely private and taboo to speak of. I think it's really informative and just plain interesting to see examples of actual results, not play some wild speculation game.
Genuinely like and appreciate the openness and the kind of "behind the scenes" of how this whole thing works. Trying to figure out all the analytics and stuff can be very overwhelming for new creators.
This is the first second channel video of yours i’ve seen, congrats on the first ad on this channel! :) Have watched all your main channel videos so glad to find this channel!

I'd fully agree with the description: interesting!
this aged well… mr beast is such a fraud
Scott, Mr.
Appreciate the shout out. It made my year. Honestly I may never be the same Joel after that.
4:16 this is so scummy.
I know he pointed out the differences in Ryan’s video thumbnails but I literally saw no change 😂
I think the difference in saturation might have been lost in the screen recording
Clearly something he puts a lot of thought into
View stats oddly doesnt show the dislikes on MrBeast most recent upload
This aged beautifully
11:01 I think I like the older version better for this. I think seeing your face in the thumbnail is better than blocking it off. Especially the eyes are good at grabbing attention to me
I always appreciate how encouraging you always are to smaller channels!
This video was ahead of its time
As someone who used to do UA-cam myself, I love getting current behind the scenes information on this kind of thing! Thanks for sharing your own experience with it too. I think the ABC testing is really cool, especially when I used to design multiple thumbnails, stick with one and just waste the others.
In defense of your 10/10 videos, i tend to put your videos in my watch later playlist because I WANT to watch them, but I end up losing track of them due to having a lot of channels I follow that provide content that appeals to me. a lot of the videos in my watch later are the kind of stuff that actively excites me, whereas your content is moreso stuff that I'm not aware of but the video gets me to enjoy the topic.
like a fine wine 🍷
Welp, you've encouraged me to get back to making things. It's not the encouragement i was expecting, but thanks, dude.
All these videos exposing Mr. Beast popping up again with the recent controversy lol
Yeah, even Food Theory’s video on Feastables popped up for me!
Yesss! Hovering over a video to see the description would be so nice
With the loading bar, it's pretty common for companies to do this practice. It goes fast in the beginning and slower at the end to keep you patient. You've probably seen this of you've ever downloaded a game, and the progress gets stuck at 99% 4:41
Bro was ahead of the game
This was actually super helpful and of course entertaining as always. Thanks Scott!!
The accurate description idea kind of exists as an anti clickbait browser extension
One of Germanys biggest UA-camrs - Rezo - designed and programmed with his team the Website Nindo. Did MrBeast just copy that?
Does it hurt the analytics if we skip forward past the sponsored segment?
@@LukeMillnerhow about if you increase the playback speed for some parts?
@@willywillybumbum9851 Better than skipping but still a little worse for the watch time metrics since you’re taking half the time off
@@willywillybumbum9851 In the past that also hurt the view duration or w/e metric(s) (SpiffingBrit did a video about how playback speed impacts video metrics), but of course YT is changing their algorithm all the time so who knows if it's still true or to what extent it's changed if it did change etc etc.
I swear UA-cam never pushed your VR video to me. I didn’t even know it was made!
This was SO absorbing (lmao) - I love the “nerdy” behind-the-scenes vids. And you do a great job of walking the average viewer through the statistics and meanings behind different processes - if you wanted to do another few like these, more creator-focused vids, I’d tune in!!
The prophecy.
11:54 I actually noticed this change back when you first uploaded it, I didn't watch it because of the different thumbnail I was just busy when I first got the notification lol
Love the youtube shop talk. You are inspiration for a midsize channel and making money. Thanks man
Just finished the movie theater seats video. Perfect timing!
Same lol
8:09 idk man, you might be right. But also, I'm about to leave....
I really appreciated this one! I’m super interested in how UA-cam advertising works, so this was a perfect cup of tea
Kids??? When did Scott have another kid? :D That's awesome.
I actually like your thoughts on your past videos. I missed the Scavenger Hunt video and because you mentioned it, I'm going back and watching it. Pretty cool idea :) Love your work!!
I will be downloading this video and watching it on my 10 hour flight! Thanks Scott!
I'm not a creator or even an in the weeds person for youtube but this was still so interesting!! thanks for talking through it all and showing the examples!
Scott says “pay attention when my ads don’t have a progress bar” and boom the add in this video doesn’t have one. Too funny
That loading bar trick was actually genius though, employing the standard loading bar strats
i hate the obsession w getting max views immediately bc i often times put off watching vids from some of my fav creators because im waiting til im ready to relax and have the time to give it my full attention, which sometimes takes a few days! it does not mean there is something wrong w the video!
This was a really interesting look behind the curtains. I don’t often think about all the work creators do behind the scenes to make a video perform better and how they work on me. Thanks for sharing!
so the title was clickbait? great. thanks for that.
Would MUCH rather have the hover-over description than the current preview/play-thru. Listen to the man, UA-cam!
25 views in 17 seconds keeping you big as hell
This is so cool as someone who wants to go into statistics for college. I had a blast Scott
am i the only one who liked the shrek thumbnail more 😂
Well good timing, I opened UA-cam to see my favorite thing
Scott just posted
I really enjoyed the bison video you should be proud of that one
Very cool of you to compare their data to your own. I am far from a content creator but I found this super interesting!
I like your titles that aren't "I tried this" because they feel creative and unique from all those other clickbait UA-camrs
Bros got superpower
scott "canary in a coal mine" mcstruggling
Aged like fine wine
I think a very important distinction that I assume the website has no idea of knowing is whether or not a given channel is getting above average UA-cam premium views (premium views earn you more), and whether or not the channel is in the Google preferred ads program.
Google doesn't even tell the creator if they're in or what the requirements are, unless you're part of the partner Support Program... you just got to watch your analytics and hope you are in.
1:21 the fact that his 6/10 is at 105M views just shows insanely massive his channel
I had this biggest feeling the title of this video was changed 😂 you showed me how to check and it has been changed 😅
What was the original title?
@@ChaksFM it doesn’t say but definitely changed one time, think it was the 26th of last month can’t remember now.
THANK YOU for the transparency. People treat numbers like they're intensely private and taboo to speak of. I think it's really informative and just plain interesting to see examples of actual results, not play some wild speculation game.
i could listen to you talk about this stuff for forever! i find it so interesting ahh
Genuinely like and appreciate the openness and the kind of "behind the scenes" of how this whole thing works. Trying to figure out all the analytics and stuff can be very overwhelming for new creators.
This is the first second channel video of yours i’ve seen, congrats on the first ad on this channel! :)
Have watched all your main channel videos so glad to find this channel!
That's sad that the VR video didn't do well; it's one of my favorites of your recent videos. Side note, I watched it in the middle of the night when it came out and then forgot who made it and could not find it for a while. Knowing that you changed the title explains why I couldn't seem to find it later haha.
So am not crazy for thinking that tiles and tubnails change.
they change all the time
you can add an ad bar into the actual video progress bar in youtube studio, brands won’t be able to complain about that because ftc guidelines state that you must declare what is an ad and that is the way that youtube provides
