How to Improve Your Aim in VR FPS Games - VR Aim Training with ThetaVR

You can improve your aim in any VR FPS game, but following the traditional, pancake FPS aim training methods won't usually cut it. Because VR is so different from desktop games, you need to train differently. In this video, I show you the ins and outs of how to improve your aim with aim training in any of the most popular VR FPS games.
Although my personal favorite is Onward, what I talk about in this video applies to Pavlov, Contractors, Population: One, and every other VR FPS game out there which focuses on using realistic weapons (or at least somewhat realistic - looking at you, Pop1!).

Some Mechanical Tips and Tricks I've Learned to Aim Better Without a Gunstock:
1. When using a rifle, try to distance your hands as much as possible (e.g. if you're right handed, right hand close to your face, and left and as far as your arm can reach). One issue while shooting without a stock is the little shakes and jitters your hands have while holding near-weightless controllers. Due to a matter of angles, the further your hands are away from each other, the less these little jitters will actually translate into barrel movement, which can help with shot stability and more precision shots.
2. Aim with your front hand: as long as you keep your rear hand in a consistent spot relatively close to your face, when you need to aim, you can just point your front arm at the target. This allows for a "natural point of aim" aiming style, and if you practice a bit you can usually get to the point where you point your front arm at the target and the sights will be on it.
3. Trigger control and breath control do actually kind of matter. Not as much as with a real firearm ofc, as the trigger pull on an oculus controller is very very light, but you can still jerk the trigger. Same thing for breath control- not hyper important, but holding your breath, or waiting until you're breathing out to break a shot, can give just enough stability at long range to make a precision shot.
4. depending on your preferences, using the "virtual stock" option most games have can be useful to help stabilize shots. However, how these virtual stocks vary in quality from game to game. In onward, it basically snaps the rifle into your shoulder like a magnet, automatically lines up your sights, and greatly stabilizes any shot. This can be helpful, but also might feel annoying as it's a very overbearing and aggressive virtual stock. Pavlov's and Contractor's virtual stocks are practically useless. The game I think does it best is H3VR, as it makes it seem like you actually have a stock going into your shoulder without feeling "magnetic" like in Onward. Overall, it's worth trying out.
Any other tips that come to mind were covered in the video. Just some things that have helped me to aim better in my VR journey. Maybe some will work for you, maybe some won't.
H3VR stocks are the best
THIS IS ALL I NEED TYSM
Thanks! Brand new to VR and you are right there’s not the same level of creators making these. I appreciate it
Welcome to VR, you're gonna love it.
I want an update where this guy is now, also love you theta!
Great video as always ^^

This one will be a hit. Welldone buddy, congrats on 1000!
Excellent content. Your vids help keep my mind sharp for when I can finally return after training.
Dude thanks for making these videos man! They’re super high quality.
Nv had a 22 minute video pass by so quickly! Keep bangin on them questions for theta😎
This video was amazing. I was waiting for this type of content to come my way.
great video, will definitely help many with your simple explanations
BedsideSock approves, pleasure playing with you and thanks for the help 🤟🏽
I'll say it,: I only finally bought Onward about a week ago. And yes, I've already gone into competitive lobbies.
After that I have been spending a lot of time on the shooting range.
Focused mainly on getting smooth at reloading and using utilities.
I'm using a pro tube so there's been a steep learning curve but it's getting quicker every time.
One thing that has me hesitating in games is not team killing. Many times I've had a enemy in my sights and I've hesitated, and it got me killed.
That's normal, you'll get faster with recognition as you play more. One pro tip is to always look at your hands if you aren't sure - your gloves will be the same color as your teammates.
Brand new to VR i love long form informative videos i can just listen to while working out this video was good
Another first in the vr community. Thank you theta. I'm sure you've heard my frustration with my aim. Perfect timing!!
this will help me a lot with onward thanks
I always love your vids. They’re so cool and I’m thinking about joining a league team because of your vids.
Good luck man, :).
I’ve got no friends to play this game with, so I’m really trying to learn to rely on myself. This video is super helpful
I think people don’t realize that vr aim quite literally reflects off your real life gun skills. Your real life hand eye coordination, and your steadiness. One great thing I’ve learned for improving aim (other than having years worth of growing up shooting and playing sports) is target ranges, preferably the contractors range when you’re in the lobby and can activate the timed shooting
@@TrTriTrippin that’s a big issue too, muscle memory for shooting helps, otherwise the only way to help that is get one of those gun stocks. I practice before I jump into multiplayer by doing target practice and dropping my gun and raising to the ready and shooting as fast and smooth as possible, that way I get used to where my hands are supposed to be
I just came to this blog to benefit from the game for real life training 🤣
😂it really doesn't as holding a gun is much different than two controllers not connected to each other having gun knowledge does help with reloads etc. But aiming is not really the same except at its fundamental levels being good in rl will not automatically translate to good in vr I grew up shooting guns and still do but in vr its just not the same period
@@realname2490 Most competitive players use physical stocks so I believe that's why they said that.
You videos are like medicine
Interesting video. Food for thought
Hey! fucking love your videos! I have been trying to get into VR for a year now and finally purchased onward and the quest 2 which will be here early this week. Keep up the content im watching all of this!

@@TheLonelyViper “hello again it’s your old friend thota the hella thiccc messiah”
That stock looks super simple and extremely versatile (I mean this positively)
What I notice is a lot of more experience players go through a cycle where you always use rifles then eventually you start using lmg’s then after you dip your toes in you get addicted to being able to just shoot anything and then sometime after that you start to choose guns depending on the map then depending on the obj then depending on the situation like how they’ve been playing it’s really weird not really
Gotta love it 💪
Love this
So helpful video!
BTW Flicking is really hard to me seriously XD
When I sprint and see in front of enemy, I failed my flicking so I'm dead usually
Im late to this but I appreciate your vlog
If you don’t have a stock and can’t afford one, get a certain weapon and press the controller on your chest and chin, it gets the scope close and also helps stable aim, especially with a bipod. When laying down, you use the ground to stabilize the controllers (Certain weapons like the SVD and M16A4 scopes are too close, only good with bipod).
Most scopes over 2x are fucked without a bipod when you’re free handing
Vr community needed this
Nice video! Incentive for me to get to the range more often, and also to record and review my POV--I'll bet there are a lot of cases where I feel like I wasn't fast enough, when in reality I shot first but slightly wide. :(
Tip that I learned from resident evil 4 vr is to rest your aim hand on your offhand for stability
Lol shit bro, im 33 years old, ive been playing videos games for about 28 years. Now this VR is on another level. I found rifle mount for the VR controllers for improved accuracy, even Etsy has some for around $50 with a sling. I liked and subbed, awesome videos, keep it 💯
Right on, dude - thanks for watching, and welcome to the game.
Awesome.
How do you only have 3k subs? This channel should be at millions
Thanks man, maybe someday.
I've seen how Lmgs and snipers really require stock use. Rifles, shotguns and smgs don't really needs a stock I feel. I've become a rifleman only because of this with light shotgun use. I found I can snipe using a 2x scope pretty decently but in the end using a rifle is best. I've also got to see how underrated shotguns are. Primarily shotguns allow fast ttk and at times allows you drop more then one target in a single shot. Then allows you to hit moving targets more easily. Lastly more gear utilities like flashlights and more grenade, C4, stunning, smoke etc..
I use some weapons tilted slightly and I don’t use sights other weapons I do but I sometimes I go in to a room and eliminate Avery body with my gun tilted I don’t know if it’s because I know were I’m shooting or because it just less accurate and it just so happens it hits them this vid was useful but for some weapons
One thing I always try to do is to keep my arm facing the general direction of the enemy while reloading so I can reaquire the enemy. Also, do you think it would be a good idea to practice on gun club vr for onward. Some targets do move but a mostly stationary.
I haven't played gun club but if it's mostly stationary targets I doubt it will help you.
Would love to see what your thought are on ALVO
10:54 you're a mad man
Do u use a stock, what was the rifle u used in the range?
What’s a good app on be oculus quest 2? I’m trying to get better but I need something like this

Helpful cause I suck when it comes to aim
How versatile is the bowk? I know that the magtube is said to be very adjustable and can fit almost any gun in every vr game, but I have heard from some people that it can have tracking issues as well as having difficulty finding the magnet after reloading, does the bowk have any of those issues? btw thank you for the very informative video!
It's the industry standard at this point. Incredibly lightweight, no tracking issues to speak of, and moving in and out of the cups is way faster than anything you'll find with magnet-based stocks. @@ThetaVR awesome, thank you!
Love video any tips for contractors
Thank you. The only change I would make for Contractors is to focus heavily on headshots. Onward has a low TTK so you can kill quickly even with body shots, whereas in Contractors you pretty much have to hit them in the head to kill in a reasonable time.
@@ThetaVR thanks for feedback I play onward on quest as well as other VR fps I like the fact that you can angle your arms in and around windows and Connors and ducking enemies between pillars
guys in Contractors do you use stocks? i have one i use for Onward but im not sure how useful it is in other games.
Yep, in fact Contractors has a "stock calibration" feature that allows you to mold your gun grips around your stock. It's one thing I wish all VR FPS games would adopt.
@@ThetaVR Okay, thanks man!
Is there any Plattform to join competitive matches ? Like esea or esl just for vr.
The VR Master League: vrmasterleague.com/Onward
can anyone help how i can be more stable? i play freehand so im not stable at all. i started playing 1 week ago and i only have 18 hours so does it improve by itself when i play?
Your stability will always be a bit off if you freehand, that's just the nature of playing without a stock. That being said, you can improve your stability by practicing and being conscious of how you're positioning yourself. When I was freehanding I would keep my elbows tucked and hold the gun closer to my face, and I would crouch a lot so I could rest my elbow on my thigh.
Hi new here, my Onward game is downloading
Right on, welcome to the game.
I think aim alone doesn't make you a good player, but (IMO) having bad aim can make you a bad FPS player.
Competent aim is a requirement for being a competent FPS player in general in pancake games or in VR.
This video is literal gold - Great reminder that I stopped practicing aim this season and I've complained a lot about missing my shots but not worked to fix it.
As always great videos!
Thanks dude, glad this video could help you out.
Man, I thought i was getting decent at reloading until I watched you reload that LMG faster than I reload an AKM
Well, your first problem is you're using an AKM...
@@ThetaVR whoops, i was thinking of the AK-12. Still learning the guns, pretty new to Onward
@@westmichiganangler5419 All good. But to answer your original comment, I've just been playing for a long time. Practice your reloads enough and they become second nature.
im assuming u use a vr physical stock? don't have money to buy one but they seem cool.
Yep, I use a Bowk stock: BowkVR.com
bro, what do you think about using gun club VR for training the aim
I haven't used Gun Club before, but if it gives you a way to practice the motions and hand-eye coordination required for good aim, then it's probably useful.
@@ThetaVR in gun club, I miss some kind of practice of shooting a target more than once. Always that you shoot a target once it desapears.
Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.
Do the lmgs have limited rang I dumped 150 rounds into a sniper to creat cover fire and he didn’t even move
Nope, LMGs have the same range as rifles but some people will just sit and get suppressed. Make sure you have a foregrip too.
Is it on quest?
Do you recommend getting a controller stock? Or is that a gimmick?
Highly recommend it. I was a freehander for my first few seasons but I've been using BowkVR stocks for a while now. They're the best in the business, and you can find them here: BowkVR.com
@@ThetaVR awesome, thanks!!

Hey bro could you tell us your volume settings in onward
Just curious because of the new sound update
I have everything maxed out and then I use the system settings on my PC to adjust it as needed. But I'm still having issues hearing people and locating enemy shots because the new sound system is a little wonky.
@@ThetaVR okay thanks dude
how can i get on a team i have all the stuff to play i play alot of vr fps
I have some videos on joining the league, check out my Beginners playlist.
Pog
How do you use pistols with the stock?
You need to remove the controllers from the stock in order to use pistols.
One thing for newbies, even though the target audience tend to be former soldiers etc.... Learn to aim with your both eyes open. Seems simple enough but isn't, if you don't really engage in firearms.
Wish I had known this channel when I was just starting lol. Do you think we could ply together sometime I curious as to we’re I am to u and someone on the discord said you were the best player.
I don't know about being the best player, but you can join my Discord and participate in one of the locked comp lobbies I host a few times a week. You can join here: invite.gg/ThetaVR
Also, don't be "that guy" who is trying to run a dick measuring contest about who is best. Onward is a team game and the results that matter are team wins or losses. If you want to see how you measure up, playing casually isn't a good way to do that. Sign up for the league and actually compete.
Dude, you’re like the “what I’ve learned” but for gaming. (“what I’ve learned” is another Chanel that gives good tutorials on… life but he’s fkn good… like this) lol
Wow, thank you. That's a pretty big channel, hopefully I can have even half his subs someday.
Something I would add to more a physical thing than something in just in VR. Be hydrated! Drink water not energy drinks or soda. WATER!
My hands are too shaky to hold the weapon still. any ideas to help
Drop all caffeine.
Also consider getting a stock.
@@privateger no more soda 😟
@@privateger thanks
I've been using the virtual stock fezture for a few months now and i kind of swear by it but do you think it has a stratigic element?
I think it will hurt you more than help you in the long run, but it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're just playing casually, then do whatever you want. But if you're looking to compete, I'd stop using it if I were you.
@@ThetaVR why
@@bruhg3450 Probbably because the virtual stock limits your weapon manipulation too much
It's crazy cos I'm terrible with a keyboard and mouse but never have a problem in vr.
It's understandable, aiming in VR is way more natural than aiming with a mouse and keyboard. You're using your body in a natural way, whereas the mouse and keyboard setup is something you really have to train yourself for.
This dude reminds me of Paul Harrel.
You're technically making gun kata
I don't think I could get a stock if it's that much
Hey man, I haven’t played onward multiplayer yet because me and my friend have been practicing on bots, since we are new but would you recommend a ‘steady and slow’ play style or rushing to a better advantage on the enemy?
There isn't a single dominant strategy. With any highly interactive game the optimal strategy depends on what your opponent is doing and what you think they will do next. Sometimes aggression is the right call, and sometimes taking it slow is better.
@@ThetaVR Appreciate it :)
In onward the one who shoots first and has a gun pointed at the target will probably win, the chances get higher with a rifle
Everybody sleeps on the G3 LMG lol
U say noobs shud stick to rifleman, but I prefer marksmanship, class i like to weapons and maps, and love the sniping aspect of this awesome game
You should learn to play the game as a rifleman first, and then switch to marksman. It's important that you learn how to play as a supporting member of a team before you start playing as someone who hangs out on the edge of the map.
Not sure how many players use the 'whole body' for the game. Most probably still move with the control sticks only. If use use some 'run in place' system like VRocker, things tend to be a bit more shaky.
I just wanna say that it feels like 2013 again does it? People are still trying to learn to be better like how early cod was
you could always just rest your right hand on your left arm
Just got a quest and onward this week, probably the single least toxic community I've ever joined
There are some toxic characters, but it's much better than COD or other big shooters.
What game is this
It's called Onward: www.downpourinteractive.com
My eyesight sucks, so that’s my biggest issue, target acquisition
i just wanna be able to finish fallout 4 vr
Does one ever truly finish any of the Fallout games?
@@ThetaVR i finished fallout 76 and I never even played it.
H3VR is good for training aim
Do you reply to every comment, if so, nice
Not _every_ comment, but most of them.
This is the same in real life ...
You tell me what to do. But not how to do it.
Because it isn't as simple as 1-2-3. It depends on what kind of game you're playing, what your experience level is, etc. If you don't have enough information to come up with an improvement plan after watching this, I don't know what to tell you. The teacher can only show you the door, it's up to you to walk through it.
Easiest thing to do is just train with real firearms and then translate everything over to VR
