Milky Way IS NOT Blue so what color balance is best in Milky Way Photography? | Two Minute Tip

  • The Milky Way is definitely not blue but what color balance choice in kelvin should I set my camera for when I am doing Milky Way Photography? The answer is simply choose ONE and STICK WITH IT! The color choice in camera is NOT important since you are capturing the Milky Way in RAW. Being consistent will make your life easier and help you see and recognize the color of airglow in your night sky as you keep sticking to the same kelvin every time you capture the Milky Way. What is MORE IMPORTANT is what color you choose in your post-processing and that is ENTIRELY UP TO YOU and IS AN ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION not an accurate representation.
    June is the mid-point of the Milky Way Photography Season and marks the final month for Panorama Milky Way Photography. To celebrate that I am releasing a new Two Minute Tip video every day teaching a new aspect of Milky Way Photography! Today is Color Balance and tomorrow is Camera Practices!

      Haha yes! I hope so! In fact, I can't keep straight all of my long-form ideas I am excited to create! I covered all of these topics through my weekly live Milky Way Wednesdays but the audience was always small on those. I am excited for making quality, concise to one main lesson long form videos after this month of Two Minute Tips is over! :D Thanks so much for watching! -Aaron

    I always just leave it on auto. However, I come to realize though that because some shots will change because of that, and if you leave the color to "as shot" and you're stitching a pano, then the same color wont sync to the others with the other adjustments. It stays on "as shot" of course. So long as it's tweaked and adjusted a little to 'custom' the colors will be all be synced to the following photos before you stitch them. I fear if I set it manually and forget to change it back to auto for daytime (which would be an inevitable outcome) then I'd have to fix a lot of daytime photos, which is ok shorta cus I shoot raw for daytime photo too but still, just one less setting to have to remember to adjust back.

      You literally detailed a specific paragraph I had to cut from my final video because it was too long to include in the two minute tip! Well done! That is precisely the only time I have found that using Auto can cause a problem. With a bunch of single images I can always change it in post but I won't gain that familiarity with different auto balances each time. But exactly like you said, mid-pano when using auto you can get too varying of color balance to force you to try and fix in post. Sometimes as easy as syncing white balance first but i found in one pano where sand was involved, even synced to the same white balance color in post, I had some obvious merge borders where normally I don't get them. So consistency in capture is absolutely best! No matter the kelvin you choose. Thanks for your helpful comments, Q! -Aaron

    Thanks Aaron. Just found your videos. I love they are short and to the point. I filter for vids for under 4 minutes. I am tired of 20+ videos with 5-minute offensive-music intros, too much talking and less content that you have in your two minute vids. Great stuff, I know these are a few years old but still great!

      Thanks, Warren! I agree and just wish they were universally loved too. Those 2-minute tip videos did not get the same traction as others. Not sure exactly why. I am editing a video right now that will NOT be short. And my live stream Milky Way Wednesday is the opposite of those 2-min tip videos. But it is a classroom format and is meant to go an hour. At any rate, your comment makes me want to take the video I am editing right now and cut it down severely. I wonder if I can… nevertheless, I will make some more 2-minute tip videos to keep them coming for you and others like you who appreciate them! Thanks so much for the comment! 😃 -Aaron

    What about if you have a Astro modified (full spectrum) camera? What white balance setting would you use for that.

    • @PhotogAdventures
      @PhotogAdventures  4 роки тому

      Now that is a completely different discussion. One that I do not have the answer to. If you have one, you have seen how your colors are crazy in camera and that you have to white balance them back in post. In my non-astro modded camera my color is what I set it for and then I white balance to a preference. YOUR situation is nearly a color negative of what the camera sees and you do some extra legwork to bring the color back to a natural look. I have a friend who uses lightroom's color eyedropper tool to white balance to the truest white pixel he has in his image. That works for him, but he has to do it in post. I do not know what color balance he sets his camera to when capturing though. Not sure it plays a roll in his case since he has the astro modded camera. Hope that helps at all! Sorry I don't have a personal experience to draw a good tip from outside of citing my friend's experience! :D Thanks for watching! -Aaron

      Thanks! Something I have learned and happy to share! Choosing a specific kelvin is easier for me, but some people find it easy to go with 4000K using the Fluorescent option or when using tungsten it goes to 3200k but I just prefer setting mine specifically and 3800k is the color of my choice but it is NOT the right answer. Just the one I personally like. Thanks for coming back again, Peter! :D -Aaron

    I've been using 4500k. I've watched videos that showed how to adjust the white balance in Lightroom by moving the saturation and vibrance sliders all the way to the right and shirt the temperature and tint until the colors from the saturation and vibrance are in the middle. Then zero out the saturation and vibrance. So far that seems to work pretty well for me. It's not too blue, green or yellow.

    • @PhotogAdventures
      @PhotogAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      You just described my exact process for white balancing in post! I do that for each image and as you saw in my examples, while the number changes all the time it hangs between 3800k and 4500k. I tend to stick to global white balance changes to keep post processing easier, so I don't bring my sky up to a Roger Clark level of warm. But rarely - despite my one example in the video - do I go below 4000k. Thanks for watching, Carl! :D -Aaron

    Great tip, UNLESS you light your foreground, then fixing it in post is a nightmare. Thanks

      Oh? How do you mean?

    • @PhotogAdventures
      @PhotogAdventures  4 роки тому

      Agree with Qbert, depends on what you use for your foreground lighting. You can see in my thumbnail and in my examples I had two images that were low-level light painted. The natural color of the rocks coming off the white reflected light didn't ruin my color balance at all. What is happening in your situation? Do you mean some incidental red headlamp lighting? -Aaron

      @@PhotogAdventures I like to set my white balance @ 3700 and then use lights or a flashlight with a 1/2 cto gel, I run into fewer problems in post. (I generally avoid structures that are already lit). Every structure is different, this is what works for me most of the time. thanks.
