Yeah, but...We've had way more people like this speaking for every working person in this country, plenty of them over my 70yrs in this Realm...and not that far off of every working person refused to listen, time after time...in exchange for a personal pretty penny in most cases. Read on through the comments here & it's 100% support....but how many of the commenters here I wonder were commenting on vids about Jeremy Corbin.....that he was a Commie, an anti-semite, lunatic proposals, economy wrecker, last one leaving Britain turn the lights out shyte? A good many I'd wager...& `those` working people have no care nor appreciation for the collective, for the betterment of all...they are here..now..because they're personally being screwed rather than previously having the luxury of ignoring the many others being screwed.
Or in short...Eddie & Mick may well prattle on about every working person but most every working person doesn't give a toss 'til it suits.
I've been fans of the RMT guys like Bob Crowe and Mike Lynch, but this guy has a very shady past. All the smears that are normally made against Union leaders - being communists and extremists - are completely true about Dempsey. The stuff he used to post on Facebook circa 2015 was very extreme. His ideology was very much based around completely idolising the Soviet Union. I'm left leaning myself and used to be friends with him on FB. He seemed to be far left, clearly socialist, which is fine but then he started posting some very extreme stuff that 100% venerated the USSR and he absolutely did hook up with Pro-Russia separatist militia.

I’m a BT worker who was on a picket line yesterday, and there really IS public support for industrial action. So much. It was a real experience to witness firsthand people expressing it. We’ve all had enough, all of us.
This is four weeks later Matthew and there is still plenty of support for all of you out on strike. I haven't spoken to anyone yet who has voiced opposition to industrial action.
Mind, I've only spoken to other working class people...

@Matthew E. I'm not working class, but fully support the strikes and visited my local picket. As a health care worker, I understand that this race to the bottom with wages is just an expression of corruption and it can't be allowed to continue. I am reliant on trains and the strikes made my commute 3 hours long. But I consider that a minor inconvenience when we are dealing with the right to a fair days pay for a fair days work.

I find it extraordinary that everyone I've heard from the Unions has been articulate, unscripted & passionate in their beliefs. The flip side of the coin to our esteemed politicians with their sound bites & u-turn policies, that flounder like landed fish at the mere thought of answering*anything* truthfully.
The British public deserve better & I, for one, hope the Unions carry on fighting for the "common man"(us) & force change in every way.

Two years ago if you googled "how much money is in UK off shore accounts" the first hit was from Barclay's advertising their services! Cameron's father was a major player in this field. Official its stated that 845bn is held in British accounts off shore but the true estimate is closer to 11 trillion dollars..this was also available on google but is now subverted...people used to laugh at me thinking I was conspiracy nut but this is not becoming accepted fact.
The levels of greed are mind boggling, the city of London is essentially a principality which is used as gateway to the tax havens.

The original policies of the 'Left' (Labour Party) are unlikely to win many General Elections in modern times (Post-WW2) for 2 reasons - the Right-wing monopoly of mainstream media, which demonises the Left as Communists and Bolsheviks despite far worse humanitarian atrocities having been committed under the banner of the Right, and the comparative prosperity of the Working class since the turn of the 19th/20th Century, before which they were regarded as near slaves by the 'landed gentry'.
Not coincidentally, this relative improvement in the fortunes of the Working class coincided with the beginnings of the Labour Party!

As an nhs nurse I am 100 percent behind the RMT members, I have seen countless journalists and MPs trying to pitch nhs staff, teachers etc against the RMT, in reality we are in solidarity with them and other trade unions who will fight to the bitter end for better pay and conditions for their members. Its about time every hard working man and women started fighting back against the scrouges of our country.

Bravo, good point. Many in the EU were heartily sick of the UK holding up or critising "progressive" social measures, ie, minimum wage. It would be great to see a UK the envy of Europe on social criteria.
I know I would, I m French, and I live in France, but one has to realize that the EU is the weapon corporations are using to destroy all that was gained through strikes and demonstrations in the past. When I first heard about the strikes I was thinking it’s just a load of people being unreasonable and greedy, but the more I see and the more I listen to the discussion, they are 100% right. The media is trying their best to create divisions between the working class and make these people out to be what I originally thought, but their clear and educated responses are there for all to see. We as the working class need to support them, regardless of whether it causes us some inconvenience, because in the long run they’re trying to help us all. Keep up the good fight, you have my support.

This is the crux of the matter. What the tories and ruling classes and their backers in the media has been successful at is persuading the salesman on £50K that he isn’t a member of the working class. That he’s somehow middle class and part of the ruling class club. As you say, if you’re being paid a salary each month by your employer and paying PAYE at source, you’re a worker! The accountant, salesman, retail manager, all paid monthly by salary is in the same boat as the rail worker, fireman etc. We’re all providing our labour for a wage by our employer who keeps all the net profits for the shareholders.

We really need to find a way to destroy the tax havens & make the parasitical billionaires pay their fair share of the tax burden.
Yes, perhaps we should roll up the current tax system into a single tax on the monopoly of land and other commonwealth resources, i.e everything that existed before mankind, that has always been there for people to discover, and which is the communal property of all, which could include things that have been patented, like the formula for life saving drugs, for example. That way, in addition to properly funding our society's needs, we could also be returning all that excess, and clearly unearned economic rent, that the 1% currently accrue, back into everyone's pockets, by way of a citizen's income. My point being that we would be relieving the burden of tax from the productive sector of our economy, by shifting it onto the parasitical sector, which would be a huge stimulus for genuine businesses, providing goods and services that people actually need. Whilst, at the same time the cost of housing and rents would come tumbling down to affordable levels, and, with their citizen's income, workers in the gig economy would suddenly find themselves very much in the driving seat for a change, when it comes to negotiating better pay and conditions, since they would be in a comfortable position to tell their employers to stick it. Anyway, just a thought, but that could be one way of doing it, since there would be no way of avoiding, or evading that tax, simply because, if you are monopolising something, in order to extract rent from it, then you either pay that money back, or lose the right of ownership, and Tolley's tax guide would go from so many thousands of pages, to about two 🙂
And it just for this reason that the powers that be engineered our exit from the EU to avoid forthcoming financial regulations that would challenge tax havens and financial secrecy.

That's the key reason the rich fought so hard for Brexit - to stop UK finances being put under greater scrutiny through EU financial laws.
@@stephendavies201 Yes, very true, though perhaps that highlights their typical shortsightedness and inability to see past the next round of dividends and bonuses, as Brexit also potentially opened the door for far greater reaching reforms and re-nationalisation programs than would be possible for an EU member state. Oddly enough, UA-cam have seen fit to include a link to another interview Eddie did, over 5 years ago, titled "Eddie Dempsey, RMT, speaks to Labour Leave", in which he outlines much of this. It seems to me like the Tory Brexiteers are gambling on keeping any real socialists out of power indefinitely, which is foolishly arrogant, but that's just how they roll. OK, for the time being, they've lucked out with compliant neoliberal Kier Starmer, leading the Labour Party, but that could always change, and the Rees-Moggs of this world could find this a very lonely little island, in the long run.

We in Australia like in the UK are now seeing the results of the demise of the union movements. Loss of ability for people to negotiate for wages and conditions. Companies can screw down the workers and thereby increase their profits. This is the end result of globalisation. I just hope that the youth of countries around the world finally start to wake up. My grandmother and her father were involved in the Jarrow Marches of 1936 and in the same year my great grandfather started the first Trade Union (T&G) at Avon Rubber after 10 years of struggle for recognition. ✊ I myself was active in both movements. I hope the wider populis will support members and listen to Eddie Dempsey's words. 👍

Everyone lives off capitalism. We have no choice!
All main patents that power modern smart phones were developed in publicly funded labs.
And so was all the tech behind the Internet from TCP/IP and Ethernet to HTML, HTTP and DNS.
I also work in IT and comms and am old enough to have learned about these technologies as they were being developed in the academic sector, going right back to Mosaic and before that Lynx and Gopher.
The point isn't that capitalism doesn't produce things. It obviously does. But it doesn't do so in a way that serves society generally. It serves capital accumulation by those with capital. And if anything gets in the way of that, then it's too bad. Even if that means, say, permanently trashing our climate and the habitability of the planet to enrich the fossil fuel industry and its investors in the short term.

Capitalism isn't the ability to start a business. It's the differentiation of the class with capital who own the means of production with those who actually do the productive work in the economy.
It means that those with capital own and control all the work that workers do.
There are several alternatives. One that no one really pushes any more is widespread state ownership of industry (although that does make sense in natural monopolies like railways, energy, water, etc)
The better alternative for most other businesses is that they are owned and run by the employees not a separate set of people with all the resources, who do no work for their income and wealth accumulation.
This would be better for the vast majority of people who are actually doing the work AND it would be better for the economy because it would distribute more money to people in the economy who actually spend it into the real economy. Plus worker coops like this are at least as productive as top-down capitalist corporations (this has been studied fairly extensively).
The only people who lose out are the tiny elite people, the 1% or 0.1% with all the capital.
And sapping their of their financial power also saps them of political power and their control of the media, meaning we have a shot at a working, well-informed democracy.

That is a giant assumption, that is mostly wrong. Most capital, or the opportunities to get it is inherited. The idea that the poor are just bad at running their finances is insultingly wrong. It is nothing more than a right-wing talking point used to demonise the poor and shirk any social responsibility. I have been poor. I have been wealthy. I well understand both of sides of this btw.

Firstly, you have to understand that the capital class doesn’t work. It invests its capital. The workers do the work.
But sure, let’s say someone has a good idea and starts a business.
Then who actually makes that idea into reality.
Let me tell you, because I have started a business, yes, you do some work on the idea but the people who make the idea a reality are workers.
It is the workers that turn the idea into reality. People with conservative economic values say they value hard work. They actually don't. They value the capital that can buy that hard work much more. Which is why there is a massive gulf between the income of and wealth of those who own and deploy capital vs those who work for a living.
In the extreme case, no idea alone is worth the $300 billion dollars that Elon Musk is worth. Indeed, the idea that we should accept a society where one person can own billions while others are starving and cannot afford clothes and shelter is outrageous.

With respect (not just saying that btw), you don't know what you are talking about. First, you thinking about how a capitalist business is run. Sure, not everyone is ready to manage a team or do the finances, but not everyone has to do that. You have specific people with specific skills to do those jobs. What you don’t have is people being told that to do with no say in the matter. Nor that they work all day and that the surplus value of their work is then all siphoned off to owners who do no work at all.
Think about it. We use democracy to run countries. We wouldn’t dream of returning to monarchies or dictatorships. Why are you so keen that we spend all our working hours in a private tyranny where what the boss says goes regardless. If the boss says your job is being moved to China tough. If the boss says you being given a 10% real terms pay cut while the company is profitable, tough. If the boss says you only have 5 minutes for a toilet break every 4 hours, tough.
This is a terrible way to treat people, for the people as individuals but also for our society, but it is the one that makes a tiny elite most money. So that is the one we have.

They fail LESS often that capitalist businesses. As I say, this has been studied by researchers.
They also have better pay and lower staff turnover.

Capitalist businesses want to achieve one thing. Profit. Sure, you will find things like B-corps who try to have a broader range of agreed goals, but if they cannot make a profit, the other gaols are jettisoned.

I literally part-own and run a business. I suspect I have a better grasp of this than you think.
I also highly recommend a book called "Consequences of Capitalism". It’s a series of lectures from a couple of professors at a US university, Noam Chomsly and Marv Waterstone. It’s available as an audiobook, normal book and as a free PDF is you search for it.
It explains the downstream effects on our society and our planet of the workings of capitalism. The most dangerous one that we face right now, by far, is the climate emergency. BTW that is why I am anti-capitalist despite actually running a business.
The logic of capitalism demands constant and insatiable growth and profit no matter the external consequences. And the scale of the system means that those consequences are now threatening the habitability of the planet within a few decades.
Put aside all the issues of justice and democracy. Climate makes the case against capitalism on its own.

Elon Musk didn't do that. He was at the head of a team of tens of thousands of workers who did that.
And buying and selling retail stocks is gambling. It isn't the actual practice of capitalism.
The practice of capitalism is to take capital, but materials, machinery and labour power, then produce output products at a higher value than what you paid for the inputs.
That necessarily means that you pay workers less than the value of their labour, otherwise you would make no profit.
Then you take the new money you have generated and do if over and over and over again, accumulating ever more wealth.
Also, the first you heard about the alternative to the capitalist model of business ownership was when I told you about. You thought that the alternative to capitalists owning enterprises was for states to own them.
Can I suggest that before you reflexively criticise any alternative to capitalism, you actually take some time to understand what if you are defending and what it is that you are opposing when I suggest alternatives.
Let me tell you this as someone older than you (you describe yourself as a young person and I, regrettably am not).
Capitalism does not value you further than it can exploit you. If you think you are one of the winners in this system, assuming that you aren't already rich, then your chances of becoming one are extremely slim. Thanks to who I mixed with at uni, I personally know the kind of people who run banks, law firms, private equity houses, venture capitalists etc. These are the guys who run the economy. The fact that they are causing a climate catastrophe is just boring to them. The fact that millions are struggling to pay their food bills is meaningless. They think is just the proper working of the system. This isn't a class to aspire to.
Capitalism has your future in its crosshairs. The future habitability of your planet is in the balance right now. Capitalists don't give a flying f--k.
EVEN I am STUNED I have been impressed with Mr Dempsey and his General Secretary Mr Lynch, but this interview is the best I have seen yet given by this excellent young man, he is a massive asset to his union and his members. Well done this channel for the best set of questions and the way you handled his responses. 👏👏👏
