I remember when journalists were allowed to question everything and report as they concluded. We have now seen a journalist [perp-walked] for not just a misdemeanor, but after being saying he would turn himself in, upon request. These are indeed terrifying times and we must stand up for a free press.
Unfortunately, my conclusion after 30 years of thinking about the issue of organising human society is that there is no long term sustainable option; there are just cycles. The boomers caught and rode the best part of the wave, and we are now about to crash. And then we will rebuild. This is why I refuse to propagate my genome.
To my knowledge Shellenberger is correct about climate change and Zuby is well balanced. The irony if he is correct that he "failed" for being right which suggests the current way to "win" is by being wrong.
1:00 I don't understand why people on both sides refuse to accept the current nuclear is a "good enough" stopgap solution. We should have give all-in in the 90s and used that for fifty years until something better was invented, but instead we just kept using coal and gas while waiting for that same something better until maybe it's too late.
France and Canada both kept their heads and stuck with nuclear (esp. France, which doesn't have hydro like Canada). It's worked out well for them. Germany made the foolish mistake of dumping nuclear in favor of Russian gas, which nearly led to an immense disaster. It lost the gas and then had to build LNG port facilities in an absolute panic. They almost had to start burning wood for heat.
Always love to see Michael in interview as his point are beautifully articulated and are far more than just expanding his argument but also reveals more about the issues that motivate us in very real ways. I also notice that his bookshelf includes Tupy and Pooley's "Superabundance" which I think is one of the best books that pops the bubble of fear that so pervades the public sphere. I wish everyone would read it and begin seeing the reality of how civilization and the modern economic industrial system brings so much to the world. Cheers.
The problem with nuclear power is humans and politics. Just look up why Fukushima Daiichi blew up and Fukushima Daini didn't. Even so they're the same NPP hid by the same tsunami. Hell even Chernobyl was considered to be the safest reactor design until it wasn't.
Glad to see someone hasn't got the SMR fever. Sodium cooled fast reactors are potentially great but nothing is fundamentally wrong with present reactors.
Reliance on water for cooling means they need to be beside oceans, lakes, and major rivers (that don't dry up during droughts, so no nuclear reactor on the Rio Grande). This happens to be the most desirable and productive real estate - areas w/ large population. Need an alternative cooling solution that allows marginal/undesirable land to be used and makes it viable for those areas that don't have abundant water resources. And moving reactors away from populated areas also addresses NIMBYism.

Good interview and good interviewer! I’m very happy for Michael’s success

Because the bad guys crap on good ideas. And the good guys often fall for it.
The market has determined his Substack has value. Free market on the internet.

@gagamba9198 I believe Palo Verde in AZ is the only nuclear power plant in the world not located on a body of water
Nothing is wrong, per se, but if nuclear was done right we really could have energy ‘too cheap to meter’.

Asking questions like this expose your gig. You're a surface level guy.
Shellenbrrger is so amazingly intelligent. Please lose any political party. Studying insurance data and actuaries tells so much about USA.
How can a rogue go further rogue? Yes, expose those guys but not us?!
