    Just saw this and got to 14:35 when you mentioned the dates. I'm not surprised the weather was rough. It was just around then when the north of NZ (I'm in Auckland) got record rain. There were two days, about 3 days apart when, on each we got a month's rain. Two month's worth in 3 days. I suspect your timing was perfect - you just cleared NZ in time. We haven't had rain anything like that since. You were probably getting the tail end of the weather system over us in NZ.

      I am with you. It's hard not to be. And something like this is unattainable, just impossible for most people. Save your whole life, couldn't do it, speaking as a college graduate. You are born in to this kind of money.... usually

    Can you tell us more about how you used the snubber to take shock load on the boom? Thanks for posting this video, we will be making this passage once borders reopen. It's good to see how it might be, and we really appreciate it!

    Well kids, it's video's like this that convince lots of folks to go with a cat rather than a monohull! You just can't beat the stability and comfortable ride! Hope yours didn't suffer any damage from those rough seas.

    The mermonster is angry because you woke her, so you keep poking at her with a stick just for grins. Total married move. :) Enjoy your adventure - I just watched this from under the fluorescent lights of my office with windows that don't open. No wind, no waves.

    Like your approach to sailing--similar to mine--I have a 39' Pescott cat (Australian designed and built) which has daggerboards and is light--which means high speeds (mid to high teens, but not as much load carrying. At speed in waves over 3m we get the same bridgedeck slamming but the boats are designed to take it and of course we can just slow the boat down. Agree with you on going to the mast for reefing--keep it simple, complex systems are going to break at exactly the wrong time and that really can get dangerous. You're a great example of practical strong offshore boat out there doing what most people only dream of

    I'm not a sailor, I never set foot on a catamaran but a net of the same trampoline material between the hooves would not help to soften the waves that hit the boat underneath??

    I think it is because you have a fairly flat bottom between the two pods. I you have a rounded bottom that does not happen.

    The smoothest sailing video I have ever seen despite the dramatic descriptions otherwise. Well if 11 knot winds are "rough" in their view, they might as well stay home.

      It's a plastic foam-filled dinghy made in New Zealand. Called a Smart Wave 3500. Deep vee - good at powering through chop! With rod holders and a swim ladder. Heavy though - 250lbs without motor. We lift with boom crane. Cheers

    Really hate the fish eyed lens. The pounding on the bridge deck would get real annoying real fast for me. But cats make good speed and thats pretty nice. Why can't you put in a reef from the cockpit? For offshore that would be safer imo. A dodger and some sides would make the passage more enjoyable. I think I will stick to mono's but thanks for the video. I know that once your at anchor your cat will be much more enjoyable than a mono. Fair winds.

    • @elevatesailing
      @elevatesailing  7 років тому +1

      It's a GoPro - only camera we have. If you want to buy us a new one we can send you our address ;-). Tucking in a reef is easy - just loop a line through the ring at the mast - all cats I have sailed are like this. And cats are stable so it's not dangerous to go forward. I prefer to take salt spray and feel the wind on my face - putting in a dodger (which we have) takes away from the experience; putting sides would be even worse (and in the heat of the tropics, a full enclosure would be unbearably stifling). Yes - cats are loud. Yes - it's annoying on passage. But they are very fast. And we spend less than two weeks a year out in seas big enough to pound the boat hard enough to be annoying. We loved our mono for certain reasons and we love our cat for others. Cheers!

    • @RobFomenko
      @RobFomenko 7 років тому

      LOL... sorry for sounding judgemental. Just woke up. Been having a debate in my head on my next boat, cat or mono. Have had 2 monohulls. Sailed lots of cats, just little hobie cats. Not the same I guess. Just looking for direction either way. Since I can't afford a true offshore cat, I wil go with the Mono hull again. In heavy seas and high winds, I would still be uncomfortable sending me or someone at night to the mast. They ain't that stable. And one thing I know about cats is reefing is all important. But yes they are fast. Glad you love your boat. Thanks for the video.

      You're welcome. We reef down at sunset so we don't have to at night. Also we have jacklines rigged for safety if we ever have to go forward alone or at night. Good luck and fair winds!
