ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this UA-cam journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. Great video! I would love a video on Value! It is so important. It has been awhile since art class, but I do remember my teacher, a masterful landscape painter, telling us over and over that "color gets all the glory while value does all the work."
Yes!! Your teacher was right. value is the foundation of the house. You can’t make it pretty if you don’t have good support! Added to the list!
@Pointebrush Yes... my son was just telling me about taking an image and putting it in black and white (on his tablet) then finding the values on a color wheel that he's turned to Black and White and using that to paint. You end up using all the wrong colors but it 'looks right'. ❤

@marcusdekker Value in art is the lightness or darkness of a color. In black and white, it is called a grayscale with white as the lightest and black as the darkest.

I have taken Alain Picard's class on painting the painterly landscape and he shows how to create thumbnails getting us to block our values and simplify to get started! He is running his portrait course just now and I know everyone who is taking it is awash in value studies and creating a likeness and everything to create a painterly portrait! I love your videos! Color theory is fascinating. There are many and so much to take into consideration. Also you will discover that if you are outdoors when the sky appears blue, it will drop that cool blue light on surfaces and cause warmer shadows. This is because the light from the sun has blue and ultra violet rays reflecting off molecules in atmosphere causing the sky to appear blue.. If the sky starts looking warm with sunrise or sunset colors, then you will have warmer highlights and cool shadows. Same if you are indoors. Many indoor light bulbs are warmer lacking in blue or violet light.. So highlights are usually warm and shadows cool. Go outside on a sunny day with a bright blue sky and you can see for yourself that the blue of the sky will make highlights cool and shadows warm. Just observation. Another interesting factor is, the warmest color red has the longest color wavelength. The longer the wavelength the Warner the color. The shorter the color wavelength the cooler the color is. That shortest color wavelength is actually Volet. Not Blue. So, yes, so many things to consider depending on the environment and time of day. Because light changes constantly.
