As my trip through Guyana continued, I headed out to try something special: Guyanese Chinese food! Come with me and let’s see what Chinese food in Guyana is all about!
Guyanese Chinese food is Chinese food made using Guyanese ingredients and cooking techniques, so it’s a true fusion of the two cultures. To try some, my guide Stacey and I would be heading to the New Thriving Chinese Restaurant in Georgetown. It’s a massive restaurant and we’d be having roughly a dozen dishes there!

Inside, we headed back into the kitchen, where I saw the cooks preparing Peking duck, steamed vegetables, paradise fried rice, and more. The paradise rice contains pineapple, diced chicken, and vegetables. They serve it in a pineapple!
Next were Singapore noodles, which are like glass noodles. They pan-fry them in a wok with a sauce and then add vegetables. Then, they also made a sweet & sour chicken. They batter and fry the chicken and then stir-fry them in a sauce with vegetables.
We tried the sweet & sour chicken right in the kitchen. It was sour and sweet but also had some heat to it. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was like a nice glaze.
Then, they fried some eggplant they’d cut into spirals and skewered. They deep-fried them, plated them, and then added a sweet chili sauce on top.
The sweet chili eggplant was phenomenal! It was so soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. It was the best fried eggplant I’ve ever eaten! The sauce was insane! They followed that by making pinecone fish, which they batter and fry until it looks like a pinecone. Then, they top it with sauce and vegetables!
They also made some lightly fried beef and some rice with vegetables. I was loving the Cantonese cuisine with a Guyanese twist!
At our table, we had all of our dishes on a lazy Susan. I started with my coconut water and then jumped on the Singapore noodles, stir-fried vegetables, steamed dumplings, Peking duck, and more.
The Singapore noodles were beautiful and light, and the stir-fried beef melted in my mouth. The sauce was incredible and sweet, with a bit of heat. I also loved the lightness and tropical flavors of the paradise fried rice. The pineapple was fantastic!
I also loved the pinecone fish. It reminded me of a similar fish dish I’d had in Suzhou, China back in 2019. The sweet and sour sauce on it was delicious. The batter was perfect. The steamed garlic prawns were also incredible. There was garlic flavor, but it wasn’t super potent.
Then, we grabbed some of the wraps and placed the Peking duck and sauce inside, along with a crispy rice cracker. Everything together was heavenly. The skin of the duck was nice and crispy, just the way I like it!

interesting
Try real Jamaican Chinese food or Cuban Chinese. The best.
Your channel is amazing and I love how you enjoy your travels and you are so in tune with the different cultures. You interact well with people of all races, nationalities and cultures.
@@franchin5241 our real Guyanese Chinese food is different and we think it is the best. This one is new to Guyana, new immigrants opened up the restaurant,.
@@wandathornhill1221 all the Chinese food in the Caribbean is Hakka food. Same people who went to Jamaica, T & T, Cuba and Guyana. Cooking method the same except for some additional spices found in each territory.
When he said Trini Chinese food she said "careful" ! Lol. He already knows about the Trini Vs Guyanese relationship 😂. Big up Guyana 🇬🇾 that food looks Bess. Love in d house 🇹🇹✌️
she wasn't ready for that lol. they have better variety but trini chinese taste is another league
lol
Love from Guyana big up❤️🇬🇾
All love my trini ppl ❤️ 🇹🇹🇬🇾

I am from Trinidad and i could say that guyana chinese food is the best in the Caribbean and i hv been to almost all of the islands
Really Trini Vybz?
Trinidadian will be mad at y lol
@@arianayoung7537 nahh ,Trinis will argue who have better curry . But real Trinis or anyone in the Caribbean will tell u Guyana have the best Chinese food . That’s not debatable Idc how much Trini pride you have lol
@@antgambino7021 Nono
I not from there, I don't care?
As long as any foods eat good 👍 it's ok with me?
Bon Appétit
@@antgambino7021 First of all, it's probably the best in South America not the Caribbean & Idc how much Guyanese pride you have!!
@@arianayoung7537 Trini Vybz is ah Guyanese pretending to be Trini, ent yuh know how it is!! 🤣😂🤣
Guyanese Chinese is the best in the world the flavors and spices are so mouth watering, Guyana has some of the best chef’s in the world truly amazing and diverse country 🇬🇾 Proud to be Guyanese….
Love how u showed the diversity in Guyanese cuisine. Good job David!
So basically an American in Guyana trying Chinese style Guyana influenced food in Chinese restaurant while listening to Indian songs playing in background to be specific Punjabi songs 🤣 loved the hospitality of Guyanese people and food ... Your reactions are awesome 👍🏻😁
True definition of Diversity. 😊
Yup! You've summed up Guyana's diversity. Land of many waters and six people.
@@amazonwarrior7126 mate you are absolutely wrong or maybe you have wrong information. India doesnt have any national language but Hindi and English are the languages mostly spoken throughout India and official language for gov. Currently according to census of India , India has 122 major languages and 1600 other languages spoken in country but mostly spoken languages are hindi english Tamil Telugu maharashtrian Punjabi gujrati bangla kannada bihari etc from which Hindi and English are the most common one which you can speak in any state and atleast can have an answer. Now coming to South India there are 4 major languages under Dravidian language culture those are Tamil Telugu Malayalam Kannada but also deccani Urdu in Telangana also French and Portugese are there. There are many states and every state have its own language and south indian people prefer to speak in English but I have been to south India many times and everyone understands. They speak Hindi as well not as fluent as a North Indian but they understand what I'm saying or asking and give reply as well.
@@amazonwarrior7126 they don't refuse for anything . I dunno from where or from whom you got this kind of idea about South India but the reality is totally opposite ... They don't refuse for anything but as I said earlier they prefer to talk in their native language or English but every Indian knows Hindi but if a South Indian uses his native language in northern part of India people will not understand anything same goes for a Punjabi if he uses his native language in south India people are not going to understand anything so best way to tackle these kind of situation is to use a language which is majorly speaking throughout the country ie Hindi and English. I'm a hotelier and can assure you that your perspective over South Indians are totally wrong and maybe you just have wrong information.
This is how Guyanese cultures are, every ethnic heritage are important , well embraced and inclusive. The indians ( Indo Guyanese) are the descendants of India and still retain some of their cultures of music, spices and religions and clothing. The Africans (Afro Guyanese)here in Guyana are also the same but they are more westernized with their music and foods. Chinese are significant as well as British and European
Wish you had the Chinese food I grew up on it’s simple but when you think about Guyanese Chinese food that’s what I expected to see..wish she took you to one of the more local or “regular” restaurants…it would’ve been a simple fried rice with fried chicken and what we call red meat but it’s so so good! I hope you tried it while there!
Amazing Cooking. Love My Guyanese Culture. We all Celebrates each other Cultures. One Guyana.
I ate at this chinese restaurant several times when visiting Georgetown, amazing food and atmosphere. I recommend David also try the famous Indian restaurant in Guyana, awesome food! Much love from Suriname 🇸🇷🇸🇷🍹

Awesome videos. I saw u when u were there but was shy to approach lol 🇬🇾
Wow beautiful yay!! I’m second to like 🤗
Thank you David , stacy and Team for taking us behind the scenes in this fabulous Chinese /Cantonese New Thriving restaurant. The chiefs are versatile, well organised, and Wow, those colourful mouth watering foods have certainly hit my palette let alone indulging. Guyanese Chinese have been from the beginning of time in Guyana and I believe they are linked to the First people or indigenous people called the Amerindians who all have similar sauses and spices of the chinese from China. But on the whole, all Guyanese can relate to all ETHNICITIES here and have learnt culture, language , foods, and music which makes Guyanese as amazing people of such rich diversed communities.
The pineapple style foods look fantastic and I will definitely try that. If you suffers digestive problems, just eat pineapples and you will get an instant soothing of your stomach and pineapple drinks are healthy with meals. Love sweet and sour chicken. Lovely to see you David and Stacy together in these series. You gel well and BLESSED to enjoy world cuisines. ❤😁🙏👏
Looks good 👍 very colorful presentation 👌
In Guyana, as a little girl we used to have Chinese food as a treat. It was only on Sundays. Living in England for over 50 years, Chinese food is still my favourite. My Chinese friend over here usually buys me noodles and spices from China Town.
Now that is one awesome restaurant and a fantastic, professional chef who takes pride in his creation. Awesome video David
yes this was an amazing restaurant!!!
That is real chinese people not you Guyanese people stop talking credit for everyone food go make some egg balls

Hmmm 😋 beautiful restaurant. Can’t believe this restaurant existed in Guyana.
I am truly impressed.
@@amazonwarrior7126 I left Guyana almost 40 years ago, so much has changed since then. I went back 3 times, last time was 2010 and I didn’t have a good experience so it broke my mind from going again.
When they use the wok over the fire like that gives it that wonderful smoky flavor
Good morning David: First of all, I hope everything is well concerning hurricane Ian. Been watching the news and it already looks horrible but I don't think it would hit Miami because it veered off to the west and heading north but the outer bands will do damage to the area. So prayers are with you all. Sorry I missed the 'live' yesterday but I watched the replay. Very generous of you to give away the rings.Too bad you don't ship outside of the US. Now for today's video. David, it's a good thing you don't have hair because that flame would have burnt it off. Do you have any eyebrows left? Lol. I have a bone to pick with Stacy. Stacy, I have eaten Guyanese Chinese food here in Toronto and it is good but Trini is still the best in my book. I am glad that David chose NOT to choose which is better between Trinidad and Guyana Chinese food. Very diplomatic of him. Thanks David. That restaurant is just gorgeous and very inviting. Reminds me of Hong Kong of long ago but I don't know what it's like now since it went back to China. The food itself, OMG, looks so tempting and mouth-watering. Love what he did with the eggplant: gave me an idea. That's the one problem with Singapore noodles: it's endless. LoL. What's missing is some wontons. And for anyone who wants get that kind of result, always dredge the chicken and shrimp in CORNSTARCH. It seals in the juices and cook fast. My two favorite foods: Chinese and Indian. So David, another good one. I hope you give us a little history and culture and customs of Guyana sometime during your visit there. Good viewing. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode and I hope to catch you live today. In the meantime, prayers for everyone. Stay safe and may God bless you and your family and the people of Florida.🙏🙏🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦
thank you Judy!!! Appreciate you!!!
@@Davidsbeenhere you are quite welcome 🇹🇹🇨🇦
Hi Judy, I am in Toronto and you have to know which Guyanese Chinese restaurant to go to. Not all are the same. There are many in Scarborough, some good and some not so good. Some have cooks from China and not a Guyanese Chinese cook, and there is a difference in taste. You will only get the true taste from a Guyanese Chinese cook. It is simply the best taste that you will experience if you find one.
@@wandathornhill1221 hi Wanda. There is Asia Hut in Pickering opposite Pickering town center and there is Golden Star near Weston and Finch area. So yeah, Guyanese Chinese food is the best here. Problem is that all of the Trinidad restaurants here are all Indian. No Chinese. So if I were in Trinidad, I would say that Trinidad Chinese food is the best , although it's all Hakka. So I will give the Guyanese credit for their Chinese food here. Thanks for the info. I am in downtown Toronto. I hope you are having a great day. Thanks again. Maybe we will chat again in the comments section here.🇹🇹🇨🇦
Not to be biased or anything but I had Trini Chinese and Guyanese Chinese in Queens NY. By far, the Guyanese Chinese had the best flavor. BTW, There's also a New Thriving in Queens NY, not as nice as the one in Guyana, but the food is delicious. I do have to say, Trini makes the best roti/dhal puri..
Trinis cannot make Chinese food
Yuh never had it in Trinidad tho, so hush yuh biased skunt!
Trini Chinese food in NY could never be compared to Chinese food in Trinidad, different ingredients. Also David had Chinese takeaway in Trinidad as opposed to a restaurant on par as to where he is dining at in Guyana. Chalk and cheese as they would say.
@@jadea.2694 Still can never compare to the Guyanese they make it the best
Now yall would tell me is a fight start again with Trini an Guyana.....first is curry chicken an chicken curry....now is who have the best Chinese......really yall stop it an let's move on....
I think I need to move back to Guyana. This restaurant looks spectacular, I would definitely want to eat here.
Thanks for sharing these experiences Stacy.👍

I really enjoyed the Guyana series.
Very nice food, must try.
Love love love Guyana!
Ohh new episode to watch
🇬🇾🇬🇾 Chinese food is d best ..big up new thriving..
There are better chinese restaurents than New Thriving in Guyana. The "corner shop" restaurants cook tastier foods, although the menu is not so wide, and the prices are very affordable. Imo
Amazing job I went there a couple times
Amazing!
That Chinese chef is a beast, my boy steam all the veggies, and then fry everything. Could this be the secret?

Confirming that the food is 100% authentic Cantonese food. Even the banquet hall looks just like Jing Fong in Manhattan's Chinatown (one of the staples for over 30 years.)
The food looks delicious 😋
as a Guyanese new thriving is good but the best is a dutty chiney from a corner shop chiney... my fav is Maxim Garden in gt
Public comment. I am happy and proud of you McDavid and friend show guyana foods really nice.
I am so glad you gave EXPOSURE to Beautiful Guyana as always
It's nice you're showcasing the high end restaurants but you should also go to the comer Chinese shops that serve in paper bags. That's the working man mode which we love. Tear that paper bag and just eat. Having eaten here many times (as had visitors whom I've stayed with the hotel above) the resturant is for more westernised palates and glamourised.
Lim Kam was one of my favourites in NA. After work, I would take my daughter there. She was 3 years and she would always say, 'I want the red pork' . 😂. Even the vegetarian was 🤤🤤🤤.
I enjoyed watching this video..I wish I could learn also at least some of basic knowledge in video editing and vlogging as a well..
I am a fan here from the Philippines but I am working here in Central Africa...
I agree with her but I will go so far to say best in the world. The Chinese from all parts of guyana have the same taste and flavor. It's amazing.
That is real Chinese food!
Guyanese chinese food is the best ❤
What’s the name of the restaurant I want to visit when I go to Guyana 🇬🇾
New thriving restaurant it's a province on the east bank

This video didn't do justice to the beauty of that restaurant. Their food are ok and affordable. Alot on their menu too. If in Guyana a must place to visit.
Hope that you and your near & dear are safe given the Hurricane Ian Tempest on Florida.
