  • When she first appeared on Australian Story in 2014, singer Megan Washington was on a high, having released a successful album and gone public with her "shameful’ secret - a serious stutter.
But in the years that followed, this multi-talented musician’s career stumbled as she tried and failed three times to make her next album.
Instead Megan channelled her energy into facing her fears and did the previously unthinkable. She’s embraced her stutter and become a voice actor, including for the popular children’s show Bluey.
And when COVID struck, Megan began making records again, this time on her own terms.

Megan you are amazing, not only at singing but at articulating your true feelings, stuttering aside you have the power to reach inside people and pull on their heart strings. You are inspiring, talented and a natural.

thank you for shining a light on this issue. As a 42 year old father it has been a demon in my throat my entire life. I can be the life of the party and out there or else I can be an introvert that comes across as rude. Meeting new people has always terrified me and even ordering food is terrifying most of my life. It is something that you always try to hide but as a grown man with kids have learnt to live with. Thankyou for showing the world a small insight to into this inner world we have lived with our entire life. It wont define who we are as people but it will always be there good bad sad or even funny it will always be a part of who we are!!! Ive done all the speech therapy and talking unnaturally for too long is not my thing either!!!!

Absolutely loving her story! Seems so fitting she's a singer in real life, and dealing with her stutter really fills out her Bluey role!

Thank you for not saying that stuttering is something to be fixed.
As someone who researches stuttering I am glad that in a few weeks the most powerful person on the planet will be a stutterer.

I came across Megan from the TED talk in 2014 and tried to find everything she had done. That wasn't easy back then but I knew I would see her again. Truly an amazing, authentic voice and presence with song writing that leaves an impression. With so much dross in the world to see a woman who can sit down at a piano and either tear your heart out or make you laugh out loud is a great gift.

I've already seen this on broadcast TV so I don't need to see it again, but I recall another singer who combatted stuttering and used a foreign accent to good effect as a means of getting around his stutter. He is Steven Zammit, a member of "Young Talent Time" from 1975 to 1979. He would use a fake American accent in order to speak fluently, and the trick worked for him. He was a brilliant singer who could sing any genre of song during his YTT days. The last time we saw him was on the 2001 TV special(later issued on DVD), "Young Talent Time Tells All".

Talk about ironic, how the word stutter starts with the dreaded “st” sound...

Of course Meg doesn't want to discuss her stuttering. It must have been traumatizing as a child. She did enough for so many by talking about it. She should do whatever makes her happy.

wouldn't it be a little contradictory for a person who stutters to set out to become the poster child for anything
