SABICAS - UN GRAND MAÏTRE : SABICAS est un enchanteur. Sa vitesse de jeu, vertigineuse, ne nuit jamais à la précision du doigté, à la clarté des notes. Il passe avec aisance de la fougue à la douceur, de l'émotion flamboyante à la délicatesse subtile... Il est aussi virtuose dans les harmoniques cristallines que dans l'éblouissant jeu du pouce. Mieux encore, sa musique est si pure qu'elle laisse deviner des qualités humaines sans lesquelles son art ne serait pas aussi élevé. Sonidos claros y con mucho sentimiento. Los matices durante el desarrollo de las piezas, hacen que nunca se tornen aburridas. La velocidad y claridad de las notas, cuando es necesario, pareciera que fueran muy fáciles, pero sólo él puede ejecutarlas de esa manera. Me gusta sobremanera su toque.

Una increible, maravillosa habilidad para ejecutar la guitarra flamenca. Sus interpretaciones son esquisitas❤, fuera de serie !😊

I bought my first Sabicas record in 1956, when I was a 13 year old boy. To this day he remains my idol. Only Paco deLucia can challenge him

By the age of 17 or so the maestro toured in South America with the greatest flamenco dancer of all time, Carmen Amaya. He patented a crisp. infallible "toque;" the delivery was pure "duende." Some of his arrangements of South American music cannot be replicated. Absolutely, anybody that even uses the word flamenco should listen first to this giant. Long gone now, but not his music.

It's sad that people want to compare musicians of different genres and eras, although, I am tempted to say that Sabicas the greatest flamenco guitarist especially since he did so much to establish flamenco guitar playing as a concert form instead of simply accompanieament for gypsy singing and dancing.There are so many great guitarists, each adding something to the wealth of beautiful guitar music available to us.
You're right that comparing guitarists across genres isn't necessarily fair but I really don't think any other genre comes close to Flamenco in terms of technique. So if we were comparing by technique then Sabicas or Paco are undoubtedly the greatest. If we were comparing by expressiveness, the voice they give the guitar and things like that then we could debate it for years

Then again, they were true joint performances: She would dance and he would solo...not just play in the background for her. And he lived until 1990, performing for most of that time.

It's difficult to decide who had the better technique between him and Paco but one thing is for sure, Sabicas was able to play almost at his peak until a very late age whereas Paco declined after 30-35..

No sólo acompañó con su guitarra a los mejores, Carmen Amaya entre ellos, sino que dio el paso siguiente, convertirse en solista y compusitor, más tarde, de flamenco fusión con el rock.
Un apunte de lo dicho por el compañero Enrique M...la fusión que hizo con el rock fue idea y composición de Joe Beck. Con esa obra maestra "Rock Encounter" del 66...no de 1970.
Acreditado por el propio Joe Beck.
A mí no me interesaba esta música hasta que escuché a Sabicas. Pero la verdad es que tiene un sonido único. Más oscuro, abstracto y agresivo que cualquier otro guitarrista de este género.

Con niño Ricardo y sabicas empezó la evolución de la guitarra flamenca y la culminación es paco de lucia
José: Estoy de acuerdo que la evolución comenzó con Niño Ricardo y Sabicas, entre otros; pero no estoy de acuerdo con que Paco culminó esa evolución. Paco era rápido, una máquina, pero le faltaba sentimiento y matices. Hoy tenemos guitarristas flamencos muy buenos, no todos, y ellos deben ser considerados como se merecen. Muchas gracias.

Notice that Sabicas' guitar uses tuning pegs, not "machines" as with most other guitars. Not sure why, as there is no advantage as far as I know, since geared tuning machines are much easier for making subtle changes to the tuning...but the pegs are traditional. Other than that, his guitar appears to be a "flamenco negra" (dark body) which tries to maintain the volume and tenor properties of the traditional light color cypress body, while adding the greater sustain of classical guitars. Note that flamenco guitars have very thin tops, and reduced bracing, which enhances their resonance, making them sound brighter and also enhancing the tapping on the top.
