@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader What is the LIGHT CANNON effect? Can you provide examples? A quick Google search reveals no one mentioning this effect. References to this issue appear to be unique to this channel. I took a look at Dracula UHD, a film you suggested contained many HDR problems. Watching the film with HDR on and off reveals little difference on a high end Sony HDR-capable OLED display. Is it possible that you are confusing GRADE vs HDR? While I agree that a basic raw audio track might be a nice feature, the idea that ALL noise reduction for a public presentation is somehow bad seems woefully elitist or pretentious. A presentation with noise reduction is desirable. The technology is sound and it makes for an enjoyable presentation. I very much enjoy your channel but I am wondering if some technical confusion is leading you into apocryphal and unsubstantiated territory.
One of my favorite Christmas movies - seriously. I watch it every year while wrapping gifts. Don't remember when I started the tradition, but it's a good one.
On the recent 4k of Peter Weir's Witness, Arrow included the theatrical stereo mix as well as the original home video stereo mix. I really like this idea and wish they and other labels would do this more often. Options are great!

Greetings from Santiago de Chile. A few months ago it was projected a 35MM Theatrical version of "Barbella" taken directly from the vault. The group behind these exhibition is called Nexo Cinema that every friday and saturday they show movies in Plaza Cinema that for many years use to project double features programs and in the last twenty years they show XXX movies. They even show a 35mm theatrical copy of Giorgio Moroder's "Metropolis" and recently "The Changeling". Back to "Barbarella" I watch some videos of the showing and I was really impressed with the quality of the image considering it has more than 50 years. It make me remember a marvelous version of "The Exorcist" I had the opportunity to enjoy at the early 2000. Archival copies are amazing and every time I had the possibility of checking one I take it. Adiós, amigo.
I've never seen this movie, but that release sounds amazing, audio issues and stinky paper aside. Arrow is quickly becoming a favorite boutique label. (Tbh, Criterion's been a bit underwhelming in comparison lately.)
It’s a one of a kind experience for a variety of factors. This new 4K master is so stunning I think it’s a must. Arrow (aside from some audio issues) has really been the label to beat on deluxe boutique issues for 2023. Criterion has fallen behind dramatically. Indicator has carried on their great incredible work but focused more on deep genre titles.
Given the lead time, Barbarella was also likely influenced by the Batman (1966) movie, and the Batman TV show's massive success. It also has a comedic tone, and the bright colors, and 'odd' prop designs, and was also based on a comic book.
Crusader: The video quality is phemonenal! Me: Yes! Finally a worthy remaster! Crusader: Audio on the other hand... Me: (sigh) Why can they never get that part right....

The new artwork on this Arrow edition of BARBARELLA psychedella was not so "pretty pretty", so I went with the original artwork edition. I saw BARBARELLA in its original theatrical release when I was in Jr. High School after buying Charles Fox's original soundtrack LP (which replaced an original score treatment by Michel Magne). I couldn't wait for this Arrow release and am super happy with it. The stereo boost was a big selling point for me as a long-time fan of the soundtrack music, which featured famed record producer Bob Crewe. I've got a Varese Sarabande soundtrack CD autographed by Charles Fox I've seen Barbarella in all it's formats many times and still screen it often as a double feature with Bava's DIABOLIK or Losey's MODESTY BLAISE - sometimes with Feldman's CASINO ROYALE (when I need a super music boost!). All three of these films have a groovy pop-art, love-child quality and all work wonderfully well as 1960's teasing sex farces full of psychedelic colors.
Yeah I would've gone with the original art too but it went OOP plus I was able to get this standard art on sale for significantly less. Those are perfect feature pairings and all have a similar vibe to them. The score is fantastic and immediately sticks in your head.
Don't want to say that there's a slight bit of censorship with this release however I noticed in the shot early in the film when Jane Fonda is still on the ship and walking around nude. When she disappears into the back and then emerges fully dressed. The full nude shot of her walking into the back has been significantly darkened while on the Blu Ray TV broadcasts and all other versions you can clearly make out all the details of her nude form walking away. This may be due to black crush however which is something that seems to plague a lot of 4k releases.
That's interesting. It looked fine to me and my first thought is that it might be a difference due to this finally using the original negative vs the old broadcast masters and video masters coming from whatever (likely interpositive) source they were using. Plus older masters are usually a bit brighter. But I will definitely check into it. I do agree black crush is going hand in hand with brightness issues in terms of HDR presentations these days. I see it occasionally but there are other times where I wonder if it's playing into an image I'm looking at.
From the point after she puts the weapons and utilities in the closet and exits, it only takes about a second or two. I could see her form with shadows on it. Lower definition versions probably weren't able to capture the shadows. I still prefer the 4k version.
Coming to think of the new artwork with the color palettes, do you think they trying to give it a 80s vibe? Those colors are very typical of representing the 1980s. Not exactly accurate to the film, but i do like the look.
Relating to 17:01, do you ever find it personally bizarre that nudity and sex is always more regulated than violence? I don't understand why the human form and people making consensual love in a visible manner encourages more censorship than people committing brutal acts on other people. I don't agree with censorship of either, what are your thoughts on this?
It is indeed bizarre. It was always more of a problem with US censors who were and to a degree still are terrified of it. UK censors were much more permissive and more concerned with excessive violence.

That's why when they gave erotic films like Emmanuelle and Vampyres a X rating in order for them to play in 'regular theatres', it was still notably censored, hence why uncensored and hardcore films in the UK were rated double X and triple X. At least films like Emmanuelle and Vampyres were released fully uncut in the US, even if they didn't play in a thousand theatres.
I find it very bizarre that they didn't do a straight transfer from the original Mono source. Even a company like Scream Factory which often uses downmixes of remixes, their copy of the Thing included the original Stereo mix, the 70MM mix and the home video surround remix which goes back to the late 90s. They were all separate transfers and they did such a good job that Arrow Video transferred them to their version of the Thing. It's fairly wrong that Arrow didn't do the same thing themselves for a sci fi classic like this, especially when boutique labels are supposed to be a catering alternative to the way the studios release their catalogs.
I might have to pair up Barbarella with Unman, Wittering, and Zigo. The latter was a hidden gem classic, but Barbarella sure has some foxy groooove to it. Nice to see you have a talent for singing as well Crusader. You'll give ole blue eyes a run for his money...😊
I love 8mm and 16mm just haven't ever got into collecting (I probably shouldn't since I'm out of space already haha ) 8mm digests are so fascinating and cool to look at!

I believe Arrow included home video audio on the release of "sixteen candles" and possibly "weird science".

That's fantastic!!! I've not heard of any Barbarella prints being screened anywhere so that's a very rare experience.
