It's amazing to me that the Argentines and the Italians were able to get more out of the FN49 and the M1 Garand with the BM 59 respectively than the US could with the M14. It does raise the question though why more nations that had FN 49s that may have been strapped for cash didn't try and do the same thing as Argentina.

In the late 50s or early 60s the NRA published an article (to include photos of the prototypes) on a proposal made by a private interest in the USA to convert existing M1 Garands into a configuration that closely resembled the BM59. The Department of Defense declined the cost-effective offer.

The story as I heard it, was the Argentine Army was funded to buy FALs, but the Navy was refused. Since the Navy did have FN49s, they came up with this mod to do it on the cheap for the limited number of rifles they needed. The conversation worked surprisingly well and gave the Navy an interim weapon that was roughly equivalent to a FAL, except did not offer select fire.

The BM59, even the 'E' variant is a great rifle. When JRA built these from original Argie kits with nice barrels/bores, I knew I had to grab one. Thanks much for watching, cheers.

sorry to be that guy.... but the rifle the IMARA used in Malvinas was the FM FAL, both the standard length polymer stock and the PARA model with folding stock. yes, FM, its not a typo or error, FM stands for Fabricaciones Militares, the Argentine state run company that made FAL under licence.

@@christiandtorres9843 nope, look at pictures from BIM2 they used Bm59's and some FN 49's, the FAL was the standard issue rifle, but the used the other two in low quantities.

Misha, the contract for the BM59E was for 2107 conversions. Also, the barrels were both cut from american made but also produced by SIAU in Italy. I would be surprised if yours has an american cut barrel but it would be possible.

I have a bm59E, with SIAU barrel, semi and full fire selector, thanks to the tricompensatore, the full fire is very controllable.

Will FN49 Argentine shoot higher pressure 308 as well as 7.62x51NATO or only 7.62x51NATO?

There’s a Vietnam vet that I join at the local bar once in a while and he has told me several times, and swears by it, that when he was in the US Army in Vietnam he carried an International Harvester M14. He says it was a select fire M14 with detachable 20 round magazines chambered in 7.62x51 NATO. I have looked them up and can’t find anything on them. Did he have a converted IHC M1 Garand or did IHC make prototypes of the M14 and he somehow ended up with one?

Sorry nope, i don't really check armlist. About the only thing I tried to get on there recently as a Finnish Lahti down in Ft. Smith that totally turned out to be 100% scam. As to mags, i really just have 5 or 6 myself, so don't have any to spare.
