Do You Want To Own A Fennec Fox?

- For months people have been asking me to do a video about fennec foxes. Since they were still considered an Exotic pet at the time of this video, I have always been hesitant to make this because not everyone should own one. I am in no way advocating that you go out and get one if you have no experience with these animals, however, if you're going to ignore me and do it anyway, at least take my words into consideration and do as much research as you can before bringing one into your house.
This is NOT a dog or a cat so you cannot treat it like one. If you expect a pet that will cuddle with you all day and one that you can bring out for walks or out in public, this is not that kind of pet. Owning a fennec fox is best for someone who has the money to properly give them what they need, and prior experience so that you understand their mannerisms. Fennec Foxes can scream VERY loud, so do not get one if you live in an apartment or you will get complaints.
I will make a second part to this video soon, please forgive me for any mistakes or how I may look in this video, It was VERY early in the morning when I shot this. lol.
I may not know EVERYTHING about exotic pets and foxes in general, but I do have about 20 years hands-on experience working with these types of pets so please at least take my words into consideration before doing something stupid that can put you or a fox in harms way.
If you've never worked with foxes before, do that first to see if you really want one in your home. Join some of the fox groups on Facebook, Find Sanctuaries in your area or in driving distance, meet people on there who may live near you and see if you're able to go meet the fox in person. Ask them about the downsides, and their daily routines. Ask them how much money they spend yearly or monthly on the fox, find out if there are exotic pet vets in your area... all of this will help you decide. Remember too, when you travel, you'll need someone who is capable of caring for this pet.... the list goes on of things people normally don't think of before getting a pet like this...

I want to own a fennec fox
To everyone complaining about him owning a fennec fox: He's mentioned in one of the comments on this video that his fox is domesticated. According to him, Scout has always been with him, never in the wild. One of his comments says, "Scout comes from a line of over 20 years of captive fennecs." If that's true, Scout wouldn't survive in the wild. He's not going to set Scout free because it's, "wrong," to have him. He's said that not everyone should have a pet fox. He's not being cruel. He knows what he's doing.
Noctus yeah ik right... the fox wouldn't survive he doesn't hunting skills so ... and in some countries its legal to have fennec foxes
+Anon ymous This.
Anon ymous The one word you capitalized was wrong as fuck. it's "a lot" not "alot". What the fuck is an alot?
Fennec Foxes as Pets. ... Fennec foxes can be kept as pets, although they are not very common. They are petite, save for their enormous ears. They behave much like dogs, but since they are not domesticated, they do require careful socialization as well as precautions against escape.
Anon ymous but it's not a typo. I've seen too many people write alot. and this is UA-cam not college level english. I could not care less If I capitalized or not. at least I know all my words are actually words instead of this new language created by online commoners.
i feel like if a cat and dog had a baby...a fox would be the result
Lorena Bonita as I understand it, foxes are closer to dogs and evolved to benefit in a space where cats would benefit (so if you really wanted to over simplify it "a dog type evolving to be like a cat") and hyenas are close to cats and evolve to take the place of a dog
I mean this could be misinformation and I definitely simplified it a lot but yeah I thought it was pretty cool
Exactly wut ive been saying for ages! Theyre cat dogs!
Lorena Bonita EXACTLY OMFG
When your landlord doesn't allow dogs so you get a fennec fox
Since fox is almost to a cat and dog
Lmao so true I wish I had one
Me be like XD
LOL ahah
I want to get a fennec fox cuz they are good pets
Ever since I was able to meet and hold a fennec at a college event, my love for these small animals has only grown over the years. I still remember the little guy was so calm despite the heavy crowds, and eventually just climbed into the hood of my jacket and fell asleep. I was actually kinda heart broken when I had to ask one of the people who'd brought all the animals to remove him from my hood because I had classes.
Videos like this are quite useful for learning more about what they are like in a domestic setting. Perhaps someday, I'll make the attempt to finally adopt one. But for now, I should stick to having a couple plushies and doing my research about them.
9 years working pet stores, 14 years rehabbing wilds, and farming in the family. I can relate to everything you laid out. This was EXACTLY the kind of video I was looking for! Thank you for making it so cut and dried. I guess I'll put this one off...for now. :)
so a fenic is not for me because im a all around loud person
He is verey cute i love foxs.

I have no issues with wild animals living in homes as long as they get everything that they need and that the people who own them understand them as much as possible. I accidentally owned a wolf in my late teens and twenties. I was looking for a dog as a single young woman who live next to a rowdy bar and felt the need for protection at closing times! UGH such memories. I went to a humane society and explained my need and why I had such a need. The man said have I got the dog for you ! When I took my "dog " to the vet for shots the Vet was very concerned that my dog was a actual wolf! But he did immunize him and off I went. The learning curve was steep and very fast. But I did afford and learn to care for my guy. He was one of the best pets I have ever had. This was way back in the 1970's. I'm now 61 and I'm so very glad that I had Sammy my wolf in my life. At this point I have three poodles a Hissing cockroach and a Rough Green 🐍 snake. It's about all that I can handle financially at this point.
J purple ramen he had been previously owned so much command training was done. But it seriously depended on Sams mood as to if Sam wanted to listen or not. Also , I never could get Sam to understand that smaller animals ( like neighbors cats and smaller dogs) were not meals. He did fine with my boyfriends female Irish Setter but male dogs weren't acceptable to San as anything more than a snack. Sam had to be walked on a lead to toilet. He could not be tied out. He would go insane. So Sam was indoors with me or walking on a lead with me. He was a wonderful ,smart animal but he was a lot of work and also challenging to be responsible for. But I totally enjoyed him.
I don't need one. My orange cat is really small and won't get bigger, she has a weird purr, and the chases everything
then don't get one lol
Jøsh needs a New fren lol same tho fren
fennec foxes are NOT pets
raven serret read the description, he explains that not everyone should create a fennec fox
Karoline Barbará that means nothing, they are not meant to be pets .
raven serret neither were cats or dogs. no animal was mentioned to be pets but we domesticated them.
TheArtofThings and did I say I had a pet dog or cat? your argument is invalid. The must be cared for because they have been forced into domestication. the same should not be done with foxes or any other animal.
If people have been able to keep exotic animals like this, as long as they take care of them rightly!
**sees fox**
Ok, nothing can get cuter than this-

HOLY CRAP
Dude...I was working on my transmission for my van while having this video play in the background...and when he started telling us the story about the Arctic Fox...I went from lump in my throat, to eyes watering, to dropping my wrench and flat out crying...bro or Dro or whatever, dude I feel for you man, you did an excellent job and I'm so sorry to hear what happened to your Arctic Fox...
All these people are like "oh that's so mean, you shouldn't have a wild fox as a pet!!11!1!" But like he loves that little thing, like he said he really truly cares about him . For god sake you see him cuddling the lil dude, and he was whispering for scout.Hes been breed to be a pet. This is all he knows. And yes he does have instincts so he lets him out, he lets him hunt and be a little wild inside. 💝
I died at the adorable sound it made when you pet it
You have eyes that show a soul of an angel. Take care of that sweet sweet baby of yours.
😐
thank you for feeding it an actual diet suited to its natural needs unlike miss "I am vegan so my animals should if you think otherwise your comment is deleted"
I made a video about her too here: ua-cam.com/video/Z1iIHVVBgJM/v-deo.html
I love this reply lololol *thumbs up*
It's so obvious that you love him so much. He's blessed to have you.
I know this is an old(ish) video, but I have to say, I love how passionate you are about animals because everyone else I've met, just isn't bothered. I genuinely get so upset when I see people wearing real fur, or them horrible videos of animals being treated very poorly. I suffer from depression with anxiety and I can't work in a job that is customer based, I'd much prefer to work with animals as I'm a massive animal lover. I have worked on a farm, caring for rare breeds and I loved it. unfortunately, I was made redundant and I'm now jobless. however, I do hope to find the right job for me in the future :)
Take care :)
I too, have issues working with the public and dealing with people. This
is why I have such a deep respect and love for all the animals I've had
a chance to work with. They love unconditionally and know when you are a
good person and helping them... Good luck in your search for the
perfect job, just be careful not to get caught up in the politics of the
animal world and have fun with it!
PS: You better keep posting your music on youtube and sign up for their partner program if you haven't already or I'll kick your ass.
The Dro haha, my videos are very old now! I went to college and I got myself a Level 3 extended diploma in music performance, but I after I left, I lost all the confidence I'd gained :') I will try and post more videos soon, I just don't have the right equipment, such as a proper camera, but hey, you've got to work with what you have!
Pro TIP: Many of my videos are shot with my cell phone! I even edited some using it when I didn't have access to my gear. Mel also sings and had scholarships and gave up. She just recently began writing her own music again and I'm helping her so we can put a full CD together. you can hear her singing here if you haven't: ua-cam.com/video/HlCDSK7IIOM/v-deo.html
My point is, she kinda regretted giving it up for so long, you should keep doing it if you enjoy it and eventually you can make a career out of that!
The Dro My phone would probably do the job! Her voice is so soothing! she should definitely keep doing music because one shouldn't waste talent like that! I haven't given it up, as such, I just regret not doing it for so long.
It is something that I would love a career in, but I just feel that I'm not good enough, there's way too much competition out there! If you two ever travel to the UK, I'd love to have a jam with Mel 😅 her voice is so good, so unique :) Please, make sure she keeps doing what she's doing!
1. Don't make it vegan
Bethany Butler what the actual fuck? Im gonna pretend you didnt say that.
Bethany Butler okay. Thank god you were joking. That bitch that hurt that poor fox just to suit her own agenda should be publicly executed for her stupidity. I watched a video showing how bad that poor fox looked and had tears in my eyes almost immediately...
@@majorissues6604 ok
Dude, I will literally give this pet my arm.It is so freaking cute
People that care for animals like you do are amazing. We need people like you, people with true compassion, thank you for sharing!
Really informative video and I can tell you know what you're talking about. To some of the people commenting- Actually watch the video and read the description, seriously. He's clearly capable of caring for these animals properly, and regardless of your opinion on having wild animals in your home he's being extremely responsible about it and if you're going to give someone a hard time there are thousands of people more deserving of your snippy comments.
LOOK AT HIM AW OMG HE'S SO CUTE THE LITTLE SOUND HE MADE I'M SO AAAA
For some reason a fox always reminds me of a dog and a cat mixed up together
I have been researching Fennec foxes and a lot of websites say that they are basically a cat and a dog mixed
Ikr
Holy shit dude I randomly clicked on a fox video and recognized your name I loved Deadstar Assembly glad to see you’re doing good
I love how informative you are. I was hoping to find a video like this, not the usual "OMG look how cute it is!" and nothing that tells anything about the animal ya know? So thanks for making a video that makes sense!
Fennec foxes look a bit like a tiny kurama c: okay I'll stop being a geek 😂
Mika Wolf first thing I thought when seeing scout.
Mika Wolf Mini kyuubi whitout 9 tails😍
Mika Wolf nerd weebs
Such a wonderful video and what an empathetic young man you are. I was so impressed by your compassion and caring for animals. Unfortunately, too many people just buy pets on an impulse and then the pets are either abused or end up being euthanized.
The world needs MORE of YOU, you have a heart of gold.
Dunno why i watched this video since i don't intend to own a fennec fox, but this was a well-made video! I can tell you really care about the wellbeing of these foxes rather than sugarcoating it. Nice :)
To those who want a Fenic Fox but haven't dealt with wild animals much or don't have the resources to care for them properly just get a well made plush it's a much better idea then putting an animal in a situation where they may not be able to thrive.
Also, guy who made this video, I have a lot of respect for you. Thanks for sharing all this info and encouraging people to do more research!
"The only food he'll ever try to attack us for is-"

"Is pizza."

You did the best for your fox. It's so hard when one of your love ones sufferers, happy you're taking care of your post.
I felt your pain when describng having to put down Spooky. Its pretty evident just how much you care about animals. Found my way here from Reddit and was skeptical of the ethics of 'exotic pets', but see only care and concern from your stuff. I love you're philosophy of trying to give pets as much of the experiance as they would have in the wild. Great channel, mate. All the best.
Thank you so much! I've been trying to create a sub-reddit for my channel for a while now but I keep having issues. Hopefully soon! I would love to be able to educate people more into why these types of pets should be in the care of people who actually take the time to not only research, but to step back and realize whether or not they are really ready for an animal like this... I just see all the bad things that happen to them when they go to the wrong homes. I've been doing this over 20yrs and at this point, i just hope i can make some sort of impact by warning others early on.
Love how the cat's just like "Oh he's petting his fox.. I'll return later for my treatment"
Cats are worthless vermin
It's annoying to see that people only want a pet fox because of how cute or cool it'll be to show off. Honestly, it's nothing like a house pet, it's a wild animal, it takes a lot more effort and experience to actually own one of these and you better be ready for when it will most likely run off in the future. Think before getting a pet please and make sure you have what it takes.
when I get older, I want to own one.
well, now I know that when I get one, I won't let kids into my house. I've already been thinking that, but this video cleared it up . Thanks!
I want either a red fox or a fennec fox
I wish all pet owners were as responsible and considerate as you are. Great video! Very informative! Scout and your other pets are lucky to have you.
aside the whole concern about exotic pets and that whole discussion.. i can tell you're caring so perfectly for scout it makes my heart melt.
My friend has one of these. Her mom works with wildlife and got it in a charity auction. From what i recall, the previous owner abused it, but surprisingly it was fine with a bunch of teenagers interacting with it over the years.
Scout is great w people once they are holding him but he hates strangers walking into his room.
Thank you we need more people to educate people about excotic animals because most people don't do the proper research. I know this from owning my own excotic wild animals and educating my friends who get excotic pets and the majority of the time the have no idea what their getting themselves it. So thank you for the awesome videos we love you and please keep it up
I want to thank you for actually putting together a helpful video that isn't just "Don't get a Fennec Fox because they're too much work for you." Type of shit.
Fox be like: He talks to himself a lot....
Heck, I can't even take care of myself this well. No Fennecs for me I guess😆
Sam Wendt You and me both, so we wait until we are maybe one day ready :)
Oh snap, this was posted yesterday. Well am I glad to have been looking into Fennec Foxes at a time when such video was uploaded? Yes. Yes I am.

Although I don’t support people bringing exotic animals into their homes, you seem to seek the best for your animals and do it for the right reasons. I’m sorry about your loss of your other Fox
thanks. I do agree with you on that. I think very few people should own exotic pets. I never see people actually get experience before going out and getting an animal they know nothing about. I hope to help change that for some.
Some people get exotic animals not really thinking about their need, they buy them thinking they are cool.
I’ve never owned an exotic animal but I plan on owning a Fox in the future.
People need to take the time and do the research on how to take care of them before they do anything.
Highnoonhaiku May I ask why you want a Fox?
You don't want to own a fox? They're cute and are basically the gingers of dogs, the only downside is that god awful screaming they do sometimes.
I’ve always loved foxes I guess
I enjoy learning about them
Foxes have always been my favorite animal and when I learned your able to have them as pets I started doing all the research I could on how to take care of them
What kind of enclosures you need
Their diets
How to get them and all the regulations and stuff
The closets I have been to encountering a Fox is it the two that show up outside my house every once and a while and scream at each other. Also when one got hit by a car we got to take it to a vet then to a nature sanctuary.
Foxes are frequent visitors in my neighborhood since I live near the woods, I enjoy watching them walk around my yard and watching the pups grow up.
My plans on getting a Fox May never come true but I’m still doing research.
I don’t want to just get a Fox to look cool
I want to get one to take care of, to love and to have as an actual pet.
I’d never dream of getting an exotic pet just to gain fame and popularity.
Lol he's like "get that scawy thing away from me daddy, what are you doing to me!!" So cute.
20 SECONDS IN AND IM CRYING HES SO PRECIOUS
You have really moved me with how much you care for the animals you have. Thank you for giving your time to educate us about these little creatures! The world needs more people like you.
GREAT VIDEO !!! Sorry for your loss. The great thing of being human is a nice long life span, the sad part of being human is outliving your pets and saying goodbye. For everyone, make the happiest and best use of the time of whatever time you have left. Your pets are fortunate to have a wonderful dad like you !!! :-)
Duuuuuuuude, thing is adorable! The little sounds he made when you scratched his head in the first few minutes
OMG YOU ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE A FENNEC FOX!
Kendall DaWeirdo I KNOW
Kendall DaWeirdo did you even watch the video? They are very hard to keep and a lot of work. Nothing "lucky" about that. Keeping a fox shouldn't be a impulse buy.
I just died from cuteness but the info you gave is good c:
I would get a fennec fox but my house get way to loud and when I get my own house it could be a yes cause I'm a very quiet person and so is my boyfriend but he and I dont live together yet so till then I can't but it makes me happy to see someone who cares for animals
Thank you for making a very informative video about this. I didn't know that spooky had passed on. I have adored Scout for years and it's nice knowing more things about him and other animals. When the song What Does the Fox Say? came out I had always showed everyone the morning video of scout so they know what a fox sounds like. He's a darling little fuzzball. 💙💚
Thank you, for sharing Scout with your viewers. Clearly, you are a very responsible pet owner and I truly enjoyed the video.

I wanted to own a Fennec fox but after watching this video? I can see how I will have to wait until I am much older and ready to settle down more. I don't want to get an animal that is going to feel uncomfortable in my home and is spooked. I'll wait until I have the perfect environment for one and then we'll see one day. Maybe. :) Either way, congratulations on owning such an amazing animal. He's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful and you are doing such an amazing job with your furry family. One day I will build a room specifically for a fennec when I am much older, retired, and ready for something like that. For now, I will stick to my reptiles.
Completely agree kirkland... XDDDD
Don't get one. They're not domesticated
I appreciate your honesty. I hope people really listen to your words of wisdom.
You’re an awesome pet parent .. I wish there were more people with your mind set when it comes to owning any pet .. people like Sonia are the ones that ruin it for those who are really trying to give these exotic animals the best ! ❤️
Such a beautiful creature!! And you seem like a very responsible and loving owner of Scout.. I wish you and your animal family well :)
I wouldn't want to own one ,but I love watching your videos and learning more about these animals
Echo The Wolf Awh.....
Thank you for making this video! I am so sorry about the passing of your previous one. This was so helpful!
Can we just recognize how cute they are together.🥺🥰🥰
That is the cutest fucking noise at the beginning... But I do not want to have the responsepility of such a fragile animal.
Thank you for the educational video on scout. Please continue doing them. It's not the haters who complain about an animal they don't own or know nothing about, it's the dumb ass people that manage to acquire these beautiful creatures and unknowingly make them miserable, sick and even end up killing them.! Im a loving ferret mom. I hear all the same crap. It takes a special parent to love and care for our special furry babies. Your Scout is BEAUTIFUL. Thanks for the video
+Heather Silvey that is the exact message im trying to get across. thanks for understanding.
the fact that you can keep these as pets seems to good to be true
Thank you for this video. It's so cool to see someone with so much love for another animal. You seem like an awesome person.
You seem really smart and passionate about animals. Its really cool to hear you explain what its like to own a fox and your interactions with it :)
Someone needs to do a video on "so you want to own some ducks!" Because Ive had mine for a year and Ive never been so stressed in my life 😂 they're a lot of work. Incredibly messy, kinda expensive and when bird flu comes knocking ... Bloody hell. Love them more than anything in my life but they're work, more work than anyone would think.
I love how much you obviously love your animals so much! You seem like such an amazing human- im subbing!
Thank you so much for making this video! Several of my friends have been going on and on about how they are GOING to get a fennec fox, and I've been trying to tell them that, no, it's not just go buy one like a cat or dog, that this is a whole different undertaking. Because, heck, I've wanted one for literally about ten years, and I CAN get one, but it's a matter of whether I SHOULD. Too many people go and get these exotic pets because "oh, it's a cute little fox! Look at the big ears! They're so funny, they run around like mad!" But they also scream all the time when young. Thank you for making this, because I've seen far, far too many cases of people getting exotic pets, realizing they can't handle it, and either just letting the poor thing go into the wild or giving it up, which is pretty darn hard to do in reality.
I will be sharing this with my friends who are so adamant on getting a fennec.
When I first heard it's voice
I "awww"ed so loud my dog looked at me. She was snoring.
My hedgehog was triggered by the fox's high pitched noises. R.I.P.
Have you seen that video of the hedgehog without the spikes? I just watched it and he looks... well... go see for yourself. lol
The Dro Aha Yes, They do look quite strange. My hedgehog is albino so it's quite easy to see her skin under her spines.
I have one and he never wants to leave my side. Every youtuber I see talks about how they don't like being kept and what not. Maybe I got a unique personality fox. Idk, but he can't get enough of me. I take him everywhere, he even uses a litter box.
when I got my fennec fox, it was over 15 years ago. I can definitely say that fennecs and other species of pet foxes have come a long way since then due to selective breeding but I can guarantee that they will not use litter box 100% of the time and fennecs do not do as well in homes as some other foxes can. especially if they are being kept in a cage or small enclosure. There's a lot more to this but I would love to see this behavior with your fox, do you have videos you can link? Also, is your fox still a kit? If so, this could be why. as they get older things do change once their instincts come in more.
He is a kit, yeah. He acts like I'm his parent. He can't even sleep unless he's ontop of me. Unfortunately I don't have videos, or I'd make a UA-cam like you. There is a farm here in TN that sells "exotic" animals like that. Luckily they take great care of them. Racoons, wolf hybrids, foxes, squirrels, etc etc. I had a red fox before, but he didn't like too much attention. I let him run around in my back yard and I guess he become more "wild"
You will see the difference as he gets older and you will understand what I meant.
Fair enough. Hopefully he doesn't change too much
You are a very cool person! I love that you care about and honor animals so much. Thanks for your heart. ♥️
what a cute little guy!
Looks like he is in good hands too, that's nice to see!

FUCKING ME! 😂😂😂
satisfiedjellyfish23 I SWEAR 😩
Awwww, I used to own a pet fox once, I still have videos of him on youtube, I know how hard it is to care about one, especially the amount of time they need, I had to switch to nocturnal, to be awake at the same time as him, then the right food is not easy to get and I had to walk him so often, and the smell is also a thing, but I handled it quite well. Too bad he died at the end, by an accident, but I was really happy I could have him (saved from fur farm) I considered getting a fennec fox, but I am not sure I want to, they are really adorable and I would be able to handle them, but my reason for not having a fox now would be my time schedule and my money ^^; I really love foxes though, they are beautiful animals
how do u get a fox pet?

OMG the lil Scout with Luna is just too freaking cute!!! Thank you for sharing about Scout and fennec foxes. I have wanted one for many years now. Right now I have two boxers and two cats so would not be a good idea to get one, but maybe in the future I will research and think about it.
OH THE BEGINNING THE NOISE IT MADE ADORABLE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
