Nice review, thanks guys
Great review!
Great comparison!
Very good points!
thumbs up for that last part alone!!
My 2010 F800GS far exceeded my expectations for some serious trail/backroad riding through the Gifford Pinchot National forest near Mt. St. Helens in Washington totally stock with street tires. I can't imagine a better bike to ride 50 miles on road carving pavement to get to those rough roads. The engine is sooo smoooth, sounds great, and lasts like a Timex. I'm big and tall, but 85 horses makes this seriously fast, hit 125 with lots of throttle left. My only complaint is the seat, or I only have a 100 mile ass. Throw it around and it's the only bike you'll ever need.
I have a 2003 F650GS Dakar. I've been thinking of switching to the 690 R.
I tend to do more off roading than on. With coming in at 320lb that's about 100lb LIGHTER!
To me it looks like a winning battle for the 690R.
P.S. If I do get the 690 I would fix all the discrepancies such as fuel and lights. Add a Safari Tank and HID lights... ect.
Great review. Good to see open minded reviews
@stokos2005 no problem. exact this it is. you are completely right :-)
Yup. Mine does. Great bike. It's a favorite.
Nicely done
The bmw seems great for my type of riding. I love to trail ride but to get their requires 50 miles of highway to get to them. This is where my current dual sport (wr250r) is lacking, in highway and long distance comfort
The KLR is a nice machine. I agree. But once I threw my leg over a KTM, there is no going back. The KLR feels tired and sluggish by comparison. Sometimes, it's worth spending a little extra money on the machine. The KLR though does have the larger fuel tank, which is something the KTM really needs.
I like em both. But for someone like me who wants a street legal dirt bike, the KTM is perfect! The BMW will be nicer on longer trips but that's not what I plan to do. I just want to ride from my home to the local trail, ride , then ride it home. :).
I had the 640 enduro, back than at 1999-2002 and i've ride the 800 of a friend ricently.
Never riden a 690 but i like it very much.
I thing that they are very different bikes with the 21'' front as the only common.
The 800 needs a very good rider to get into serius dirt. I believe that it's a better Transalp 650.
The 690 can teach the beginer (not of course the racing demands).
Anyway. Very nice presentation guys. Thumb up from me.
Greetings from Greece.
+1 for the 690 with the 640 Adventure styling. Everyone wants that..
Great video...was kind of disappointed that they didn't create a stand out verdict but I guess I understand what the point of their conclusion was...oh, and best part of the video was the truck taking a swim. LOL
That's the problem with dual-sporting. Compromise. Off-road vs road capable. Light vs heavy.
I wish KTM would make a 690 ADV .I own a KTM 640 ADV.I love the 500KM between refills.
Very informative...and all these years later the penny still hasn't dropped and KTM still doesn't do an 'Adventure' bodykit on the 690.
Since middle weight adventure bikes like the BM and the Tiger800s are selling really well, KTM are really missing a trick by not adventurizing the 690.
Fast forward 4 years and they have. Enter the 1090R, which can electronically be dialed back in HP closer to the 690.
@@jaypuck6912 1090R is not middle-weight no matter how you look at it.
@@ggelhsva Maybe you don’t know the facts. The KTM 1090 Adventure R weighs 15 lb less than the Tiger 800. The Tiger was mentioned in the original comment that I replied to. I don’t disagree, but the person I’m responding to brought it up.
@@jeremiahpuckett5836 Fair point. I, too, agree that Tiger 800 is too damn heavy to be considered middle-weight. For me, anything that tips the scales at over 200kgs wet IS NOT middle-weight.
i find on the 690 the gas cap positioning a bit stupid. I was looking into buying one, but 'cause i had to take off the luggage to be able to refuel made me look towards other manufacturers. For me, that would be the only downside on the KTM.
So it's like:
Get the KTM if you don't mind hopping off a few times a day for a rest because it's not comfy.
Get the BMW if you don't mind hopping off a few times a day for a rest because you're about to pick it up, again...
I'm talking stock weight. What is carried on the bike is up to the rider.
4:10 wtf, the ktm have the exhaust on the right side? O.o what have you done with the camera..
If 2010 BMW F800GS weight 152kg (wet) like KTM, the winner will be obvious. It's 55kg difference! My vote goes to KTM 690.
the bmw is 200 kg wet the ktm is a lot lighter
Yup! The weight is what's keeping me from going toward a Tiger, BMW, or even a KTM 1090R. When I lay it down, I can pick up my KTM 625 SXC "(same weight and HP as the 690) with just my hands and arms. For road riding and true dual-sporting, the small tank sucks. The lack of cruise control sucks. THE SEAT SUCKS.
They didn't make the G 650 X Challenge in the U.S. in 2010.
I want that KTM!!
grate Motorcycle bmw f800 gs i have the same in greece
0:41 It's Francis from Deadpool!
I dont think these bike are meant for the same purpose...am I so wrong?
A fairer comparo would've been F800 GS vs Triumph Tiger 800 XS for obvious reasons. Then compare the KTM 690 vs similar thumpers: 650 Honda, Suzuki, KLR 650, Husaberg or Husky and see how they fair. Otherwise the comparo is nearly worthless. Beautiful scenery though!
I disagree completely. This is the compromise every dual-sporter has to make. Better off-road at the cost of comfort on the road, and vise versa. His comparison was perfect. I have a KTM 625 SXC, which on paper, is essentially a 14-yo 690R. Same HP, same weight. It's a freaking torque monster and nearly unstoppable off-road. I've ridden up Jeep trails I wouldn't take a Jeep on. When I lay it down, I can pick it up with just my hands/arms. But it is AWEFUL on the road. Vibration, hard seat, small fuel tank. My KTM might be street legal, but I'm not comfortable on the streets with it. This video basically said everything I just said, and concluded with "it's up to the rider." That's 100% accurate. If I buy anything heavier and more roadtrip capable, I'm not going to be doing some of my favorite rides off-road. If I stick with what I have, I'm not going to be doing any weeklong trips to Yellowstone and back.
They both look like awesome bikes to own. I need to win powerball...
i agree, very different bikes, cant compare
The BMW800 is a great bike but I reckon this trip we did through Kaokoland (Northern Namibia) in September 2015 would be a step to far for it. Six KTM690R's and a KTM990R took up the challenge and handled with ease. The big surprise was the 990R that handled all the tough stuff and blew us away on the open stuff. We got virtually no video footage of the 990 because it stayed so far ahead.
Check out how the 690R's handled the tough route. UA-cam ua-cam.com/video/-SbTGs2MZo8/v-deo.html
That KTM looks like my kid's dirtbike. No thanks.
Bring Back the 640 body with the 690 guts...yeeehaw
As amazing as these two looks it still cant beat Yamaha XT600 and Honda NX650 for 700$ I just found in ads :D
German heritage (german and austrian) sure is great for valey riding a mountain climbing, but still cant beat todays discount price of 90's japanese world crossers. They would need to offer much more bang for the buck to beat this competition.
i hate the dakar ferring one of the reasons why i like the 690 is it dosent have it
The 800GS is about 170-180KG. The 1200GS is 220KG ish.
Anyone who rides off road does so without a tail box. That is even stupid on road..they change the handling of the m/c. A bag is much better but for comparing why the bags?
I thought that strange too. Even if the boxes were empty, they're still adding about 50 lbs to the bike.
How the hell do you get your truck in the middle of that river!? Wtf.
Kids. Dad's NOT gonna be happy lol.
I would have offered to warm up that chick in my hotel room. :)
I want to know how they got their truck in the middle of that river.
They used four-wheel drive.
4:50 OMG!
Orange blood flows in my veins! :-)
In french Nez Perce Pass means
Pierced nose pass lol
@JETZcorp Not for their purpose.
That Cummins probably fires right up out of the river
interesting comparison . i like it. on another note ...... those kids are in trouuuubbbleeeee. lol dad is going to be pissed
Meh, yeah individual rider...I hate windscreens with a passion. Yeah, air off your body, fine. Then you get turbulence on your helmet, your neck gets tired, and it you get a ton of wind blast noise. Give me a naked bike anyway, I'll ride it 12 hours and hop off with a smile.
These motorcycles can not be compared with each other.
KTM 690 can compare with bmw x 650 x challenge (category hard enduro), BMW F800GS Adventure can compare the KTM 990 Adventure (category enduro).
It is more than obvious.
F800gs just about does the same as the 990 not quite . But costs less uses less fuel.
Both of these bikes have too many strokes.
bmw ktm best bikes BUT enduro long dist bmw...
my ke100 wins BY FAR! :P at least in pricing....
multistrada!
its kinda strange, that u compare the gs 800 with the ktm 690, but ok, its the american way i guess..
full trip f800 gs got more than 220 kg for sure
f800gs vs ktm1050 instead of whatever this is
the best...t p on t river...
the ktm weights about 50 kg less than the beamer.
can´t compare in this modifications. the big thing about the austrian bike is that you can drive it as dirtbike and modify it as an adventure bike. add a bigger tank, a windshield an of course a better seat and you can get anywhere you want.
That single is really going to piss you off on a really long ride. Also the lack of weight means the bike is nowhere near as stable
@kennyMoto650 lol grammar
To tour long dist BMW end of story for gay 100 km rides ktm...
There's no such thing as a dual sport. If it's good on dirt it's gonna be a loser on the road, and vice versa. If I'm going off road I'm gonna take a dirt bike with knobbies. If I'm going off road I'll ride my GS on the way, and get on the RM 250 when I get there. We swap out riding and driving along the way, it's a nice back road ride most of the way. And it's nice to have a road bike while we're at camp. A 500 pound "adventure" bike is a real adventure to try to pick up when you're 63 years old. LOL If you see me taking my old R/100/ GS off road I've over cooked a curve and in the process of crashing.
505197 is an idiot.
You are exactly right. When I go to Black Mountain ORV park, I take my Honda Helix for running into town or riding over the hills into West Virginia. The other guys love the damn thing. When you get wore out from riding 50 off-road miles there's other things to do, like ride 50 miles to the next county that's not dry, to fetch libations. Then if you're like me, 63 years old, the second day of riding doesn't appeal to me, my thighs hurt like hell. So while the youngsters are out I go sight seeing. As far as 4X4s are concerned, fuck them, I'd rather walk than ride one.
ktm 950se
***** I have a Geo Metro that I'm turning into a motorhome. I've removed the pass seats to provide a sleeping area. I bought a bumper-dumper for my sanitary needs, and can pull a trailer with two bikes. Finally I can camp in style, free from the limitations of a motorcycle. Now I can have a camp stove, a large cooler, air conditioned comfort if I choose to leave the tiny engine running. I have two that I'm making one from, I could add a roof and make it a two story and rent it to a Mexican. I've made quite a bit of progress, I have quite a few bolts removed from one of them. By spring I hope to have all the bolts removed and most of them put back. If I'm still alive then, I intend to go camping on the Tail of the Dragon once again. When you reach 441 in dog years, you never know what tomorrow brings.
I realize your post is four years old but things have changed. The KTM 1090 R !!!
bmw has 220 kg, ktm 150 kg
Dat sentence structure. If you've got nothing good to say then dont say anything at all. Comparing these bikes is like comparing apples and chickens. KTM are not "gay". Why don't you watch this /watch?v=NkWExBMv0cg. you'd never see a BMW rider ride his bike like that. I'll get a BMW when I'm too old for enduro riding, until then mad KTM's!
Sense of this = 0
