  • It has been five months since I have sowed the current batch of seedlings. Well actually, there are two batches. One is indeed 5 months old, while the other is 4 months old.
    My echeveria seedlings are finally starting to differentiate themselves in terms of looks. Some of them are starting to form the rosette shape, while others are starting to get their markings. You can also clearly see them taking a shape similar to their parents.
    This experiment has proven to be successful. I'm very stoked by the fact that the tray containing my own hand-pollinated seedlings are more successful than the ones that I just left for nature to pollinate.
    I think I should move on to the frillies right away!

      Hi Patricia, sorry just saw your comment. If it is bright enough inside and it's not too humid, you can grow them there.

    I like your vedios ,after seeing your vedios of succulent I have purchased 12 no. of succulent sedums, Echeverias and other.I am from India ( Delhi).The plants are going well but after one month temp. will go upto 43* celcus where I should keep my plant,inside or in shade outside or in room .How much water I should give in summer and rainy season.please guide me .Any more precaution of Echeveria.please let me know.

      Hi Peeyush! I'm not sure who Kevin is, but I'll answer in his place.
      As you know, I have my plants outdoors. In summer, we also get high 40s celsius. What I do is install shade cloth on top of them as soon as we get a forecast of the daytime temps start going above 35°C. I remove the shade after summer when the daytime temps go down again. As for watering, just water whenever the soil gets too dry around the roots.

    I have a question- Is it possible to cross or breed succulents from two different families?

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 років тому +2

      Hi pank, depends on what you mean by "family". In taxonomy terms, the genus Echeveria belongs to the Crassulaceae family, and it has been successfully bred with members of the same family such as Sedum, Graptopetalum, Pachyphytum, Tacitus, Cremnophila, Lenophyllum. This results in hybrids such as xSedeveria, xGraptoveria, xPachyveria, xTaciveria, xCremneria, xLenoveria.
      If you try crossing it with a different family, such as Cactaceae (cactus), the seeds are sterile.
      Actually, many crosses result in sterile seeds, even within the same genus. You are likely to get something if you stay within the same genus, just use different species. These are called "infra-specific hybrids". You can also create hybrids from different genera, these are called "intergeneric hybrids". I don't think it's possible to create hybrids from different families though.
