  • Forbes' Randall Lane discusses new reporting on why employers souring on Ivy League graduates. Forbes surveyed nearly 300 subscribers to its Future of Work newsletter, with three-fourths of respondents holding direct hiring authority. Among those in charge of employment decisions, 33 percent said they are less likely to hire Ivy League graduates than they were five years ago.

    When I hired for IBM in the 1970's in San Jose, I prefered graduates from Santa Clara U. and SJ State over Stanford and the Ivys. The reason is that graduates from "elite" universities often had a sickening sense of entitlement and arrogance, and could not fit in well with the working environment. On the other hand, graduates from less "elite" universities came with a desire to learn and a motivation to work hard. It was an easy choice.

      All the big high-tech companies interview at U of Waterloo and 99% of people have never heard of it. Why? Because Uni level academics is a pure meritocracy in Canada to get in and stay in. After all, would you rather hire someone with a legacy / sports entry into Harvard who has a BA. or someone who fought their way thru a well-regarded comp sci, engineering school with a two thirds attrition rate.

      Those “non” Ivy Leaugers have to prove themselves … I can say as a Gen x’er with no college degree. Grateful for my success, but I had to work harder to prove myself, because in the back of my head I always felt “less than” due to my insecurity about people with degrees, that drive gave me the fire in my belly. To this day, most people think I have a degree, so I I never sit back and cruise, I’m always learning to stay relevant. Interesting though to see the changes in the new mindset about higher education.

      I completely agree, which is why I prefer delegating daily decision-making to an investment coach. It is nearly difficult for them to perform below par given their specialised knowledge, extensive research, and the fact that every ability they possess is focused on maximising risk for its asymmetrical potential and minimising it as a safety net against certain unfavourable turns. I've worked with an investing coach for over two years and have made over a million dollars.

      You mean: with no internet, 3 channels, a population 4/9 as large as now, with an average of 9 acres per person, instead of only 4, fertility rates that were actually *over* replacement levels in most countries - in contrast to now - no confusion on which gender was which, machine intelligence but a faint premonition, gas station attendants, people who actually *walked* outside, obesity a rare phenomenon rather than *half* the population, with colleges that were $100 a semester? It all looks the same, just like that? Yeah, that's what we call being a Boomer, or in your case, early-stage-X-cosplaying-Boomer. That's practically a Boomer trope, "everything's the same as it always was", which is just a fancy defense-mechanism way of expressing head-in-the-sand denial and Future Shock.
      As for the "Why can't we learn?" trope (i.e. "Those who don't learn from history repeat it"): history is nothing but a self-contradictory jumble of unrelated facts. Example: "Never fight a land war in Asia" ... Alexander The Great: "Hold My Beer. 22-0, the Rocky Marciano Of Warriors!" [and Kandahar - in case anyone forgot - *both is and means* "Alexandria".] Those who walk backwards in time looking at history for guidance shall suffer the curse of being blindsided from behind by the future. The future is not a logical consequence of the present or past and can only ever be accurately and correctly seen by precognition, such as may exist, and by no other means, whatsoever. And those who derive "lessons" from the self-contradictory hypothesis of history are committing the p-hacking form of deception known as the Lie By Omission.

    As someone who went to an elite school (not Ivy League, but still quite prestegious), I can say from experience that you get the same degree for the same job and the same pay no matter where you go. Yes, class sizes were smaller, and some of the programs were legitimately better than at a state school, but it was also my experience that the quality of the class depended largely on the effort of the teacher. I've taken amazing classes at the local community college where the professor put a lot of thought and effort into creating good discussions and content. I've also taken sub-par classes at my prestegious school where the professor just lectured from the textbook for the whole time. Where you go to school is less important than who does the teaching, and while I do think that my prestegious school had better classes and better overall programs, I also know that you can get a quality education elsewhere if you do your research and pick the best professors. There really is no reason why Ivy League has to carry more weight in terms of who is the best educated or the most hard-working. I think every school has those students. Employers just have to be willing to look past the name on the diploma and ask the important questions about how someone can actually do on the job.

      I agree. Even if I don’t agree with the message (regardless of whether it is hate-filled or not), as an American I strongly defend their write to speak their mind. The only time I don’t support that speech is when is ceases to be speech… violence against others and property damage are not “speech.” But as long as the kids on college campuses are doing what college kids always do in times of war (see Vietnam… it was literally the exact same thing), I’m fine with it. The only reason this is in the media is because both sides want to use the spectacle to rile up their bases and turn it into some big political opportunity. It’s very self-serving. The kids are protesting because they feel passionately about this stuff. MSNBC and Fox only sound as much air time as they do so they can selectively show the few bad actors and sew anger and among their viewers to keep ratings high. I’m a capitalist just like most other Americans, but the desire for profit really seems to far outweigh the goal of creating and keeping a happy, satisfied, respectful and tolerant society. How long before we can vote out the extremists in Congress and get younger, better options for President? We’re due a reprieve from all this political nonsense.

    • @jasonswitzer1748
      @jasonswitzer1748 Місяць тому +6

      @@Reserch.and.qustion.everthingI’m not entire,y sure that’s accurate. For sure, some people were protesting the war because they didn’t think America should have been there and didn’t want to get sent to war themselves. But many also protested because they thought war in general is a senseless act that just leads to death on both sides, both soldiers and civilians alike. So in that respect, I think the Israel protests are similar to the Vietnam ones. Interestingly, you don’t really hear about college kids protesting about us funding Ukraine so it can defend itself against Russia. I think the reason is because in the Israeli conflict, while Israel is literally defending itself after it was attacked, the response has been pretty disproportionate and there is a lot of coverage of Palestinian civilian deaths. I would be curious to see if the protests would die down if Biden said that we’re cutting funding and military aid to Israel until is provides a written and enforceable agreement that says that it will carry out its military campaign in a way that will severely reduce the amount of civilian casualties. Israel can still go after Hamas, but it will have to do so in a more targeted and deliberate way. This will undoubtedly take longer for Israel to accomplish its goal of completely dismantling Hamas, but it may quell the protests and get people back to supporting Israel. Either way, I’m looking forward to all of these global conflicts ending. Hopefully that will be soon. We’ll see…

Because after my bachelors, I’m going straight for my PSYD degree and I was wondering if it would be better to go an Ivy or regular college. And I’ll tell you guys exactly what he told me! Whether is an Ivy League college or regular college…. We are ALL trained the SAME WAY learning the SAME material! Ivy leagues are basically for bragging rights! I’ve spoken to a couple of therapist when it comes to my mentorship and supervision in psychology! Believe it or not…. One went to a regular college, and the other went to an Ivy League College. It's a narrow view. If you use 1968 to compare you better preface as a historian the huge differences here.
    And what about these protests? HOW do they really compare with 1968? The United States can't bring anyone back from a war, it's not our war. US gives funds on both sides of this horrible battle (humanitarian aid) in Gaza and other countries do as well.
    In 1968 students were protesting a forced DRAFT, bodies coming home in coffins... and what as a country we did in Vietnam. It was beyond inhumane.
    Atrocities in Gaza need to stop but how will accepting the demands of a few who are not protesting an American war and its ravages? How do the students request to divest, for schools to divest funding, figure here? The protestors are making some bold demands that seem out of context. Like forcing the school to change where they invest money?
    It's not the same. As as for voters running to Trump? Are you kidding? Soon as Trump was running for president the protests began and they never stopped until he left office against his will.
