Modern units need very little to keep them down at temp because of the huge amount of insulation in the construction and they are cheap to put up.

Bruce Dickinson it’s more about temp control. When underground temperatures don’t fluctuate like top side. So if you need to store stuff that needs stable temps underground storage is a god send. For cold storage if in a stable base rock it can be cheaper to just dig than build. Limestone is amazing for this as stable but easy to dig into.
