Thank you for this video. Made me get my Amex Cobalt card... only thing I wish was it had the airport lounge benefits but on the other hand if we r buying business/first class tickets we get the airlines lounge access.
The reason the platinum is worth it with 3x points is because the platinum has no limit on amount of money that can be used to redeem that 3x. For the cobalt per year you can only receive 5x point upto 30,000 dollars spent on dining and groceries etc. so if you are more wealthy and spend 100,000 plus per year. The platinum gives better rewards for the rich.
You would still use the cobalt for the first 30k regardless of how much you spend because you're always 60k MR points ahead, which is well worth the annual fee of the cobalt.
The footnotes on the Amex site continuously talk about the reward multipliers for eats/drinks/gas etc when in Canada…. What about when traveling abroad? Do you still get the multipliers?
Heard that the Cobalt's welcome bonus was devalued this month. Any thoughts on whether it's worth waiting to see if the bonus will return later this 2022?
so excited! I've had my cobalt card for 10 months and already accumulated 120k points.. can i transfer these or just the points i've earned after august 16?
So excited about this change! Glad I applied in May back when they had the 45K bonus points + 120 GCR. Probably brining in about 1K in effective net benefits with this card this year!
Q: You recently suggested applying for tbe gold amex for the welcome bonus before its phased out.. What happens to cardholders once it is removed, and can the points be transferrrd to
Good question. I called Amex about linking membership reward points for two different cards and the agent seemed very aloof. He said the two card reward programs aren't quite the same so basically I could not currently accumulate points under one account. He did kind of hint to call them back after card changes on August 16th and that seems to give the impression that they would be able to do it after that date. I suspect you won't have an issue if both cards are the gold and platinum as those two card programs I believe are the same just different earning multipliers. Other than linking cards to collect under one membership reward account I believe you would have to transfer the points out to an airline program to ensure you don't lose out if you cancel the card.
Now that the changes have occurred I spoke to an Amex representative. What was told to me is that the cards have to be in the same tier in order to be able to pool points under one membership rewards account. Platinum is a notch above Gold so you can not combine, Gold is above Green so again you can not combine. Apparently the Green, Colbalt, and Business Edge are all the same tier level so it is possible to pool points there. Seems a little ridiculous on Amex's part. Given that explanation, if you are a churner, it is best to transfer out your points to an airline or hotel partner program.
I know Amex is re-introducing the Green Card in Canada but I believe it will be a credit card and not a charge as it is replacing the preferred ones. The Gold Amex is probably the one that will get a retool as the benefits seem weak now compared to the Colbalt. I can see a metal Gold Card as they do that in US. Hopefully whatever they do to it does not result in a huge bump in annual fee.
Aren't they also upping the redeem ratio for statement credit from 7 to 10, making it basically a 5% cashback card optionally(provided you get 5x on most things)?
@@PrinceofTravel you're right, between this and the changes you laid out, this card outcompetes every card and you don't need an arbitrary income level to get it
Love the channel! Quick question, are you able to breakdown the actual "grocery" stores that count for credit card bonuses. Things get confusing especially for AMEX where wal-mart doesn't count as a grocery store and it's not accepted at zehrs...no frills...freshco and so on. Thanks!
I found this as of Feb 2021. Food Basics, Longo’s, McEwan, Metro, Pusateri’s, Rabba, Safeway, Sobeys or Whole Foods, you’re golden. Loblaws banner stores, including No-Frills, do not accept AMEX
@Prince of Travel, so if I apply for an AMEX Cobalt with your referral link, will I get a 30k welcome bonus on top of the 50k amounting to a total of 70k?
I cant use Amex at Costco or no frills. pretty much the only 2 stores I shop at lol. But I do go out to eat alot. Would this card still be worth it for me?
@@Eric-hz4cm Love this idea, but Costco online doesn't accept amex and to my knowledge you can only buy Costco gc at Costco - unless you have a work around you can share? :)
My Gold card fee is in January, might seriously consider switching to Cobalt if Gold not updated by then. 5x on groceries is nuts. At 2 cpp you need only $130 per month spent on 5x category to recover the fee, and only $163 to put you back on par with most free 1% back cards
Easily the best credit card in Canada. I've had mine for around 3 months and have already accumulated 21k MRS points. Now that those are going to become regular MR points and I can transfer them to Aeroplan. My RBC Avion Visa Infinite (previous go to CC) is a joke by comparison. My only question about the changes are about the mobile device insurance. I need to find out if it applies if you switch your monthly financing/billing to the card or if it has to be charged from the start of the finance charges/purchase date. That's the only fuzzy part because insurance companies like to be sneaky about that.
So as an update to this insurance question I had, I got my answer from American Express. The phone needs to be purchased AFTER August 16th, 2021 which also means that the monthly billing charge needs to be put on your AMEX on or after that date as well. Sucks for me for the next two years...
Very informative video! Just applied (and got approved) for my American Express Cobalt® Card, I’ve had the shitty RBC Rewards+ Visa credit card for 2 years now and it was about time I upgraded lol. Can’t wait to receive it, thank you!
what do you think is the best card to pair this with? for some places I'm dining they dont accept AMEX and I need a mastercard/visa as a backup. What do you recommend?
so I'm new to all this cc stuff. Being a recent graduate I've only had two credit cards. I am currently using RBC Avion Visa Platinum with an annual fee of $120. I was thinking of changing it to the Avion infinite but even that i do not know the difference between the two. All I know is that in order to get the infinite card, i would need a minimum income of 60k. So if i were able to apply for the American express cobolt card. Would i use that card as my main? what about my rbc cc? Would i just cancel it? But it does still have all my points accumulated over time. and is there a reason to have two credit cards? I need some help lol thanks! This vid is amazing!
Great card…until you have to call customer service. AMEX will always take the merchant’s side. Don’t know how to handle basic situations. I’d hate to be in a situation where I’m travelling, loose my card and then have to call customer service. Instead of helping, their main concern, why I didn’t contact them before I traveled. I also paid for a service I never received. The merchant sent me supporting documents to forward to AMEX, proving they didn’t receive the payment. AMEX closed my case saying, we paid them. AMEX did not make it easy to cancel after the second situation. I had to talk to an agent who begged and begged me to stay, however would not resolve an easy issue.
Excellent video. I'm in a pickle debating whether to apply for the Amex Cobalt or Platinum. I do have a Gold Rewards Card and I love it but I definitely want to add another card to my arsenal of Amex cards.
Sometimes I wonder how Amex affords such generous 5x points. Considering Aeroplan is valued at 2 cents each, they're giving like 10% value back in rewards. I know they charge higher exchange fees to merchants but damnnnnnnn, they're generous
They are also probably buying a shitload of points in bulk from Aeroplan. It's how Safeway and other retailers are able to have crazy Air Miles on stuff they need to sell.
Its a fair question, my completely baseless guess would be Amex can probably buy them for 0.70-1 Cent Per Point or less. Meaning that the interchange fee between 2.3-3.5% would cover it.

Hi Bro is the American Express Cobalt Card in Canada a Charge card or credit card? Can you pay monthly minimum balance with the card or you need to pay the full balance every month?
Does the Cobalt have trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance? On their website they list everything else, from flight delay to hotel burglary insurance, but not those two things.
