No kits back then you had to make everything by hand…

I like your willingness to jump in and figure out the electrical. You might consider getting a two day access to the Toyota TIS factory procedure and wiring system and then download everything you might need. While you are online to TIS each procedure has links to common procedures as well. As far as the video, you might consider a tripod instead of the head mount. Most likely a Sony camera with optical zoom will be your ultimate choice but the gopro is good for the selfie stick. Finally, making a simple drawing with pin numbers and colors would help communicate things like your relay and connector wiring. Either cut it in with a little voiceover or make it a link in the description. Would really be next level. I would also use typical relay terms such as Common, Normally Open (NO), Normally Closed (NC), Coil + and -. Keep up the good work.

I normally don’t look out my car back up camera when the trailers connected. But I like to switch to the back up camera on the trailer when the reverse lights come on. Can you show me how to do that?

James Klafehn - Turns on/off the Birds Eye View for up to 7mph. That’s why I said would be nice if the 7mph restriction was removed. Putting it in reverse give the back up grid angles with birds eye on the spilt view
Try and connect a button to do that wire harness... that is the camera view button location in Rav4 hybrid limited, maybe it would turn in without backing up? Who knows

Actually, at least here in Scandinavia, you void the Toyota factory warranty by cutting (any) wires yourself. Tip; Use only reversable mods on new cars.

Could you not just avoid the relay entirely and just add another 12v positive wire through your switch to the input on the radio for the backup power? The relay seems pointless to me. I love your rav4 content!

I know, I was thinking the same thing. IDK what it is prewired for. I tested all the wires with reverse and none of the wires did anything when the car was put into reverse. So IDK. I thought it might have been for the camera button that I have seen on other Ravs.
The 2021 Prime XSE owners manual (Canada) page 22 shows these switches. The middle of the 7 switch block is a Backup Camera switch. My Prime hasn’t arrived yet, so can’t confirm it is actually there or works.
7:07 For a switch that fits exactly into the hole, go to the Toyota parts dept and get the same switch that is used on the left-hand side (it shows a car, wavy tracks, and OFF). You might want to change the face of the switch, perhaps by merely coloring it.
Hi James, I just got my prime and really not liking the video quality of the stock back up camera, I want to get a better after market rear camera and live stream the feed into my 9 inch display unit, also use it as a rear view camera ( I didn’t purchase the premium package with the digital rear view camera), how would you go about approaching this?
Is there a way to change which USB port I use for Apple CarPlay? In mine the only one that works for CarPlay is the one in the dash but I’d like to use the port in the glovebox instead (right now it’s charge only so it doesn’t work with CarPlay)
I imagine if you got a usb extension cord you could plug it into the front and use it in the rear. If you wanted to do the same thing and tuck the wires inside the center console that would do the same thing and hide the wire.
I'm trying to find the constant power wire and the ACC wire, but the internet doesn't have a lot of wiring diagrams for the 2019 rav4 that I can use. I am assuming that it's in that same block connector that has the constant power.

Where's the sim card that connects to the ATT network? I park mine on the street and vehicle break ins are common. I plan to install a dash cam that can use the car's wifi to alert me. Don't want to pay for ATT's high prices.
Very good question. I have thought about playing around with this too. Coming from a Tesla where they track and collect your data every second I kinda liked the idea of being in control of this myself. I also thought of trying to give the WIFI module constant power so I have access to WIFI when the car is off. Like when camping or at the beach. Currently wifi is only on when the car is on. It would also be nice for this to have constant power to always be sending data from a dash cam to your phone. However, the ATT plan is only 1 gb. I used that in a couple days when I first bought the car. I havent used it since. Its not very good.
@@JamesKlafehn I was hoping the wifi would not turn off when the car is off. Or at least some sort of motion trigger. That was wishful thinking since the beginning though. Yeah, I love the outside cameras feature in Teslas. I wanted to replicate that in mine but I don't have any knowledge with electrical wiring. So I opted for a 360 dash cam to lessen reliance on wiring the car.

Since it is connected to the constant, it would only be powered on when the switch is shorted(on) and not drain power when released (off). That way, you don't need to have the engine on to use it. Just curious about that.
@@MagicGate814 I had to have a relay. The normally closed portion of the relay preserves normal operation. When I push the momentary button it sends ground to the relay, activating it, opening the relay to position 2. That activates the camera. The camera cant operate without the radio/display on and installing a switch would take away normal OEM operation. I dont see any other way it couldve been done.
It has the noise maker when you are in reverse. Its the same the whole time, the sound doesnt change or beep. I didnt think of it until your question but no, I dont have rear sonar i guess. I havent heard any beeping. Maybe I havent gotten close enough to anything though. I really dont think I have it.

Hey James, loving your Prime videos! I just got a Prime XSE myself, and you've inspired me to look into swapping the order of the switches on mine as well. I also noticed the XSE has a row of 5 switches between the dimmer and tailgate button. I wonder if you can swap yours out for an XSE panel so you have room for an extra switch in there? When an error message appears guarantee Toyota will plug it into the mainframe and discover his stupidity. Do not do what he is doing. You will void the warranty.

I have an XSE Premium and the blank space in your button panel is used to switch on the inverter to use the 120V outlet in the rear compartment.

The extra plug? I tested it with reverse and it didnt test. Nothing changed. So idk what the harness goes to.
I think I would’ve put the button in the blank in the center console. That way you could replace the blank if you ever wanted to remove it.

Yes definitely. Normally that is exactly what I would do. But in this case getting 12v there was the easiest way to do it.

Only Prime XSE models have that. It may even be XSE with the premium package. I cant remember. If you have an SE you wont have the button.
If you were looking for a correctly labelled button, you should be able to order it from Toyota. And maybe that blank spot wire harness is the camera?

Does your SE have the reversing distance alert/sounds? closer you're to an object - its beeps

Im sure they wont even notice but if they care the entire plastic panel is only $50 through Toyota. I could buy one and replace it.

IDK If you have a rear back up camera in the Camry I bet your radio has a wire that triggers the display.

Hey James, loving your Prime videos! I just got a Prime XSE myself, and you've inspired me to look into swapping the order of the switches on mine as well. I also noticed the XSE has a row of 5 switches between the dimmer and tailgate button. I wonder if you can swap yours out for an XSE panel so you have room for an extra switch in there? This is total stupidity. The dude is tearing into the electrical connected to a computer and he does not own it.
When an error message appears guarantee Toyota will plug it into the mainframe and discover his stupidity.
Do not do what he is doing. You will void the warranty.

Hold my beer while I make this way more complicated than it needs to be......... Instead of just wiring a 12v supply from a switch to the reverse camera wire, I'll add a relay and multiple wires.
Yes you need a relay to be safe.
