Totally agree with you. I play most of my instruments with the exception of french horns and bassoon lol. But I do use many of the tools as creative tools. Good creative music will always shine through.
lets not forget everyone starts off as a novice. this drummer program does make things too easy and what not, but it can make a new comer feel less overwhelmed. he/she can use this to learn how drums are played and as he/she progresses on he/she can learn to program drums him/herself. u get my point
Wrong! This is such a smart tool to bring up a great drumtrack for your song. Love the way you can sync it to any track in your song. Mess around with it if you're a songwriter. Impressive.
Once I was a skeptic, but now I believe! Glad that we're moving away from static (or granulated) drum loops. This sounds great and seems genuinely useful :) I wonder, is this like Apple's version of Native Instruments STUDIO DRUMMER? Thanks for the video :)
No you can't use your own samples, but you can send the channels off. I printed the kick to an audio track, which left it open to use any plug-in I wanted. You could always line up your samples the old way :)
You've never used or given FCPX a chance. The multicam is unbelievable. It takes a little while to learn but once you do learn it, you'll never go back to any of the other editors. I've cut my editing time in half. What exactly do you not like about it and think it can't do?
it is the full program with all the extras as in 35gb of option downloads including all the jam packs and loops and more for the old upgrade price. So again you get the full product for the old upgrade price. this is very cheap when you download it there are tons of extra stuff and it is in no way garageband pro it even does what Melodyne does
Some nice new features. I wonder how stable it is though? I recently mixed some projects in Studio One 2 because I got fed up with Logic constantly system overloading and refusing to run!
Thanks so much for this insightful demo. Cool function.....not necessary IMO though. Any serious musician should be able to do some of these things. I was looking at major sound engine upgrades and other significant changes. Have those been made? Those should be the focus. That is why i love my protools...though they are also always digging the pockets of users...LOL
you can easily convert the "drummer track" to a midi track in it's own arrange window and from there insert your own samples, you just can't do it in the Drummer app itself.
nice man, liking the look of drummer! 1 question though, hows the layout compared to older versions? is it quite similar & therefore a seamless switch? & dya have to reinstall all your pluggins?
Can you A) use your own samples for the producer kit? I've built up quite a collection. B) You mentioned you can control the individual volume levels of each channel. Can you send these channels off to be processed individually? So I could use different compressions settings or reverbs for example.
Thanks for this video. I have been a Jamstix 3 user for years now, which is not yet available on OSX, so I have avoided buying Logic Pro 9. It's such an important piece of my workflow that I couldn't live without it... Drummer seems to bridge that gap, but Jamstix still has more flexibility and depth (at least at first glance from this video). Question for you: does Drummer create any sort of midi? And if so, can I export that MIDI?
In the mixer view, can you copy over individual plugins from one channel to another? In LP9, only moving was possible by holding down a modifier key. Have you been able to test out the infamous single core bug when using multi outs etc.? I have questions that date back to July 23rd 2009 - when LP9 released :-/. Thanks once again!
ah sweet, i looked at the apple site and i must say im sold on it already! i got logic pro 9, will i be able to open these sessions in LPX? sorry for all the questions... ill get into an apple shop sometime and have a blast for myself!
As a pro using this software, and many other tools, anything that helps me do my job faster is a good thing. So while you think drummer is solely for "novices" I can tell you when I'm juggling multiple projects, time is money. Can I write out fully original drum parts? Sure! But if I can get it done faster via a tool - why not? To be honest, I'm not even sure I'll use it but it's nice to HAVE it. :P
Thank you for this video - the first on Logic Pro X! I'll probably get it today but I can't use it on my macpro tower which is too old to run Snow Leopard (I also can't upgrade to Reason 7). I can run it on my macbook pro until I upgrade. Also wondering about the xtra apps that came with Logic 8&9, I still master with WaveBurner. What about the gigs of loops & instruments w/ Logic 9? Are they still accessible from LPX? Will it run in 32 bit mode as well so I can use my UA & Powercore cards? Hmm
OMG that's freak in awesome man ;). i'm downloading Logic pro x as i speak. but i will always stick with Abelton as my producing speed was a lot slower in pro 9. but it's nice to have the flexibility of both. :) great tutorial
Thanks for the video. Question: Is Drummer just a loop based plugin and we'll still have to use something like Ultrabeat ESX24 for manual playing beats, or can we create a custom kit and play all the individual pieces manually? Also, do you know if there is any round robin going on with the samples when played manually? Thanks!
I love how all these 'pros' are commenting across the web about Logic not being pro. Bet none of them have a commercial release between them!! Most real professionals welcome stuff like this. Can't wait.
Is it possible to edit the fills the drummer makes by any chance? For example, I would have loved to throw in a crash at the beginning of one of the fills in this video, but I didn't see a way to do that in the video.
I use BFD 1.5 on a weekly basis, and have been doing for the past two years... but i still don't know how to use the inbuilt rhythms/patterns/fills -- what next? guitar rig that comes with pre-recorded riffs? my point is a musical one. although the soundcloud one i can understand, i'm just sceptical about how well integrated it is
got this this morning for garageband, i think its a pretty good idea, though a little odd in that it sort of reduces musicianship, the role of the drummer, and people actually meeting up to play. anyway ive been using ultrabeat on logic using the same old crappy kit, my question is, can you fine tune and edit these kits, for instance in piano roll?
Long long shot, but I don't suppose they've given us the opportunity to organise third party Audio units by more logical user friendly layouts like "compression, EQ, etc" - having them arranged by company name is horrible - especially when you've got a ton of plugins! Id pay for Logic tonight if they added that feature.
Hi, nice review. Can you tell us, by intelligent, will it also sense the tempo of say a bass track and adjust to it automatically and or a bass pattern adjust to the drums or adjust to eachother and, is that also tweakable real-time as you showed? thanks
I tend to agree with you, there seems to be something way too 'easy' about some of this shit. Sometimes resorting to more hands on methods probably gets more interesting results. Something about these canned loops that can be tweaked a bit, but not completely, rubs me the wrong way. I have a feeling we're going to start hearing a ton of tracks coming from people using Logic that sound the same. Sometimes doing things the hard way is better than having it all laid out for you velveeta style
you can shrink the drum regions correct? For example if I wanted just one bar that was heavy on toms and fills but wanted my other 7 bars bass, hh and snare and pretty straight forward I can do that right?
never mentioned the editing of FCPX, i'm just not a big fan of the new file-less file system... i do a lot of saving with and without assets in Logic 9 -- which helps when working with one set of audio files, and knowing exactly where they were being referenced from etc.
I tried this and loved it. But I'm not ready to jump ship to Logic just yet. So my question is: Are there any similar plug-ins to VST based DAW's? I mean with this random function?
Does anyone know how to change the speed of the drummer? I have a guitar sample which is 140 and the drum is 120. WHen i change in the tempo to 140 wel than everyhting changes to 140. How is it possible to only change the drummer tempo?
Well it just so happens that all the lenses i bought don't have auto focus... of course you want a machine to make the job easier, that's their whole purpose right? but there's a line between making it easier and dictating what you should do, how you should do it and what the final product should look like. When already so many artists (whether in cinema, music, photo...) are doing almost the same, if you add those features to it, farewell creativity.
i do alright for myself yeah, although, unfortunately there aren't as many jobbing bands wanting to cut a demo/record an album in the north west of england as you'd think... and the development and advance in the technology of DAWs like Logic is responsible for that i believe. Why spend money for a weekend in a studio, when i can just get Logic to be my drummer? :/
Is the timeline still only bars/beats/ticks-based, or does it finally have samples as an option? Fine-grain audio editing is tedious in Logic compared to Pro Tools for this reason. Fingers crossed.
Can I use my Roland td-30 midi interface to play the samples/kits in Logic pro drummer? If I connect it, it doesn't trigger the Hihat and cymbals properly... Thanks!
doubt away, a quick scan through my personal youtube uploads is a far cry from my 'dayjob' shall we say. I've had the luxury of working on a consistent basis in certain studios, with logic, and my time efficiency comes down to being able to produce and compose at speed through skill... not some machine like quick fix. it's the production equivalent of 'guitar hero' and if that makes me come across as pessimistic and even a little dated then so be it (i'm only 24 btw)
TheThetruthcanhurt And how do you do that? I'm kinda new to logic and I need to know this. Drummer patterns sound excellent but I want to create my own patterns.
This is a great tool to use for preproduction, and this is coming from a drummer. It will never take the place of a good drummer recording in a studio, which it isn't trying to do. Take it for what it is and stop complaining.
A true creative can utilize the technology to make totally original and interesting sounds. BUT, there's always the danger of things becoming too easy..that comes especially with a lot of music production that employs the use of loop packages, preprogrammed bars of music where people just layer them to make their tracks. Some rely too heavily on them, you can hear them distinctly if you've used particular sample packs. They're completely obvious, and it's why so much stuff sounds canned.
I had no idea you could do this this is awesome man. check out some of my tracks I've made with guitar and bass on my channel. thanks for the vid take care and peace
yeah, I know, I want Logic X, I just don't want to put it on this 2006 imac I'm using with an older operating system, .. still using Logic 8 pro. .. I'm just trying to convince myself I don't need it, because I'm going to need a new computer.. and that sucks. This one I'm using is dying.
presonus are affordable and work well. So does focusrite, aardvark and m-audio. I have even used digi 002 pretty well. Logic has preset setups for most interfaces.
I've been longing for this feature for such a long time. Such a simple adjustment that would make the workflow so much easier!
you are the very first with a tutorial logic pro x youtube, a few hours after its release.
that means a million views soon :-)
Totally agree with you. I play most of my instruments with the exception of french horns and bassoon lol. But I do use many of the tools as creative tools. Good creative music will always shine through.
Great review Jim - right out of the 'gate' - thank you!
You can find Logic Pro 9 instruments in the library and ES1, ESX24, etc are in the track inspector ;)
lets not forget everyone starts off as a novice. this drummer program does make things too easy and what not, but it can make a new comer feel less overwhelmed. he/she can use this to learn how drums are played and as he/she progresses on he/she can learn to program drums him/herself. u get my point
Wrong!
This is such a smart tool to bring up a great drumtrack for your song.
Love the way you can sync it to any track in your song.
Mess around with it if you're a songwriter. Impressive.
- producer kits are different mix configurations for the drums ( mix levels, plugins and such )
Gah! This is bloody great! Purchasing the moment it shows up on the Canadian App Store.
yes you can even use your electric kit on it. sounds amazing.
evidently you don't know much about FCPX, because it's a monster. The best editor out there.
Once I was a skeptic, but now I believe!
Glad that we're moving away from static (or granulated) drum loops. This sounds great and seems genuinely useful :) I wonder, is this like Apple's version of Native Instruments STUDIO DRUMMER?
Thanks for the video :)
Great demo mate..Can you tell us the details on what signal chain was for that guitar tone-it's awesome!
That's amazing. That is, until "Kyle" starts showing up late for rehearsals and spends the entire tear-down hitting on your girlfriend...
No you can't use your own samples, but you can send the channels off. I printed the kick to an audio track, which left it open to use any plug-in I wanted. You could always line up your samples the old way :)
Very cool video Jim. If I may ask, what are you using for the guitar in this video? It sounds great too!

Wow this is a really cool feature, I'd heard mixed reviews but seeing it in action makes me think getting x will be worth it, for me at least.
nice man, liking the look of drummer! 1 question though, hows the layout compared to older versions? is it quite similar & therefore a seamless switch? & dya have to reinstall all your pluggins?
I'm not sure about the kits, but it will read any GM MIDI groove.
Yes, it's compatible for a number of versions back.
Can you A) use your own samples for the producer kit? I've built up quite a collection. B) You mentioned you can control the individual volume levels of each channel. Can you send these channels off to be processed individually? So I could use different compressions settings or reverbs for example.

- yes you can manipulate every instrument in the drum kit by applying different plugins to the snare, kick, etc...
As a pro using this software, and many other tools, anything that helps me do my job faster is a good thing. Could you do a video showing all plugins
Nice guitar tone. Is that Apple's? Can you automate drum patterns? Would hope so..
OMG that's freak in awesome man ;). i'm downloading Logic pro x as i speak. but i will always stick with Abelton as my producing speed was a lot slower in pro 9. but it's nice to have the flexibility of both. :) great tutorial
This Drummer thing is good BUT IS IT POSSIBLE TO EDIT EACH MIC SEPARATELY? I mean like real recorded drums that you have Snare, Kik and etc.
Thanks for the video. Question: Is Drummer just a loop based plugin and we'll still have to use something like Ultrabeat ESX24 for manual playing beats, or can we create a custom kit and play all the individual pieces manually? I love how all these 'pros' are commenting across the web about Logic not being pro. Bet none of them have a commercial release between them!! Most real professionals welcome stuff like this. Can't wait.
For $199 this would be a great drum program on its own!
Is it possible to edit the fills the drummer makes by any chance? For example, I would have loved to throw in a crash at the beginning of one of the fills in this video, but I didn't see a way to do that in the video.
I use BFD 1.5 on a weekly basis, and have been doing for the past two years... but i still don't know how to use the inbuilt rhythms/patterns/fills -- what next? guitar rig that comes with pre-recorded riffs? my point is a musical one. although the soundcloud one i can understand, i'm just sceptical about how well integrated it is
Your guitar track has a nice crunch tone, is that an amp or a plugin?
wow, crazy! lots of inspiration is about to flow.
got this this morning for garageband, i think its a pretty good idea, though a little odd in that it sort of reduces musicianship, the role of the drummer, and people actually meeting up to play. anyway ive been using ultrabeat on logic using the same old crappy kit, my question is, can you fine tune and edit these kits, for instance in piano roll?
Monster Guitar Sound!!!!! Nice!!
hi, i could'nt see how activate the producer kit to change the tons and cymbals
thanks
Long long shot, but I don't suppose they've given us the opportunity to organise third party Audio units by more logical user friendly layouts like "compression, EQ, etc" - having them arranged by company name is horrible - especially when you've got a ton of plugins! Id pay for Logic tonight if they added that feature.
Can individual hits be added or removed? Suppose I like the basic pattern, but need to add a cymbal hit or a snare at one precise point.
Hi, nice review. Can you tell us, by intelligent, will it also sense the tempo of say a bass track and adjust to it automatically and or a bass pattern adjust to the drums or adjust to eachother and, is that also tweakable real-time as you showed? thanks
its in the canadian app store already!
eyy! the second drummer he picks has the same name as myself! :D
You are very good man, thanks !
sir i couldn't agree more with you.
I tend to agree with you, there seems to be something way too 'easy' about some of this shit. Sometimes resorting to more hands on methods probably gets more interesting results. Something about these canned loops that can be tweaked a bit, but not completely, rubs me the wrong way. I have a feeling we're going to start hearing a ton of tracks coming from people using Logic that sound the same. how do you get the producer kit?? i cant work out how to get the extra features....
you can shrink the drum regions correct? For example if I wanted just one bar that was heavy on toms and fills but wanted my other 7 bars bass, hh and snare and pretty straight forward I can do that right?

could you tell me one thing?
Is it possible now to "arm-record" tracks or to add plugins while recording?
thanks a lot!
Isn't there any button named "Make the hit of da year"?
So if you record a guitar track in, will they match the drums automatically?
Awesome
Can you create your own beats and patterns using Drummer? or input midi into it?
I tried this and loved it. But I'm not ready to jump ship to Logic just yet. So my question is: Are there any similar plug-ins to VST based DAW's? I mean with this random function?
is it possible to write in midi, like in superior drummer and using the sound only, ?
Did logic pro x keep the environment feature ?
Is there an option for double kick drums?
Does anyone know how to change the speed of the drummer? I have a guitar sample which is 140 and the drum is 120. WHen i change in the tempo to 140 wel than everyhting changes to 140. How is it possible to only change the drummer tempo?
can you write a midi channel a put this in logic drummer x?
So there's no way to just drop drum sounds into a track and create your own beats that way?
great !!
can you synchronize the kick with the bass and guitar? I'm kinda of a progressive player... or a metal layer, with the bass drum and guitars lined up
What about workflow and new synth?
hey dude, do you know if Logic pro x will open Logic pro 9 projects?
Silly question but how did you get the half time in last section
He set the little floating ball closer to "Simple."
Well it just so happens that all the lenses i bought don't have auto focus... of course you want a machine to make the job easier, that's their whole purpose right? but there's a line between making it easier and dictating what you should do, how you should do it and what the final product should look like. hahaha. You sir, are a legend.
i do alright for myself yeah, although, unfortunately there aren't as many jobbing bands wanting to cut a demo/record an album in the north west of england as you'd think... and the development and advance in the technology of DAWs like Logic is responsible for that i believe. i still hear cymbals aldo you uncheck them...howcome?...
how do i use my old plugins from logic pro 9
Can I use my Roland td-30 midi interface to play the samples/kits in Logic pro drummer?
If I connect it, it doesn't trigger the Hihat and cymbals properly...
Thanks!
Every DAW has had pitch correction for some time now.
How did u record the guitar????? Direct or m
doubt away, a quick scan through my personal youtube uploads is a far cry from my 'dayjob' shall we say. said so because of lower window. Just confused by Kyle drummer options)
can you create your own beats from scratch? as in use like midi placing to put down what drum should play where? i.e. tom, snare, symbol
Yeah, you can in all versions of logic, this is a shortcut.
TheThetruthcanhurt
And how do you do that? I'm kinda new to logic and I need to know this. Drummer patterns sound excellent but I want to create my own patterns.

I AM GIDDY WITH JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is it possible to upgrade to X from 9.1.8? or do i have to spend 180€ again?...
I don't see how to explode the drummer producer kits into separate channels - anyone?
will logic pro X work with windows or is it Mac only?
A true creative can utilize the technology to make totally original and interesting sounds. Does it have chinas and splashes?
s.r. mac 10.8.4 - muck! Snow leopard the best and i want it on sl.
What audio interface do you use? I'm shopping around for one that works well with Logic 10.2.4
presonus are affordable and work well. So does focusrite, aardvark and m-audio. I have even used digi 002 pretty well. Logic has preset setups for most interfaces.
Russ Faraci
cool thx
