Thanks Jim I can't imagine life without one. I hope people give the marketplace a try, if people do use it I will spend the money and upgrade to the best looking boxster marketplace available, with video links, independent dealer links, car meets, all that good stuff.
The Boxster was my first Porsche many moons ago. I was sold on it when going round a 90° bend flat out without lifting and there was virtually no body roll. Absolutely loved the car. Fast forward to the present day and now on my fourth Porsche, a GT4, I still hanker after another Boxster. FWIW: I wouldn’t have any issues with high mileage Porsches as long as it has a FSH with a wad of invoices to back it up. For 986, 987 (and 997) series cars high mileage cars with FSH should have had the IMS, RMS, bore scoring issues already sorted.
Thanks Eddie great to hear stories from people like yourself, cornering in a boxster is very special indeed, im glad im not a boxster tire. I'm a huge fan of the looks of the GT4, and off course the fact that you can drive to the track and home afterwards, which many owners do. Thanks for commenting, many more Porsche videos on the way, 987.2, 25th anniversary boxster, 992 targa.
Brilliant car I bought my first Porsche a 987.1 2.7 back in 2016 paid about 8k for it , totally loved it , spent all my time on drive outs with mates in there 911s who had paid 5 times the price , we all drove across Europe France route Napoleon down to Monaco , col de Turini , san Bernardino pass , Germany autobahns , to name a few , never missed a beat 5 speed , epic fun in the ttwisty , it had to be driven very hard , it's was the do everything car roof down mid engine boot and frunk ,I was probably having more fun because I had to always give the car everything , entry and exit on the bends , it tought you how to carry speed and get the most out of the car , it's easy going fast in a high power car , but in a 240bhp car you really got to work at it ...
@@thedrivebygg Window regulators breaking , not having cruise control on long road trips , standard cd radio head unit was crap , lights weren't great , you could tell there was room for improvement with handling when on the limit even though it was great I.e fitting cayman R rear sway bar and lowering car putting spyder / cayman R springs on 20mm lower .. brakes were good but again room for improvement, don't get me wrong they handle amazingly out the box but I can see the springs and sway bars sharpening everything up and sway bars and springs aren't massively expensive... I'm in a 987.2 3.4 now with PASm which is great on smoother roads , the 987.1 with standard set up was actually better on the bumpy back roads with 18" wheels over the 19" on my 987.2 ....
Great comment, lots for readers to think about. Window regulators on frameless doors are a problem after a certain age, my BMW drivers side went after 9 years, cant blame it, goes up and down every time you open the door. I'm lucky I have the cruise control option, although haven't had a long journey yet to experiment. I agree the brakes are not as good as modern cars, but the feel is better. Interesting about wheel size, not driven a boxster on 19" wheels yet.
The front of the original Boxster looked EXACTLY like a comparable 911 of the day. The 987.1 looks more like a Carrera GT…IMHO! I’ll take a 987.1 any day!
Nice car! I have an 06 987.1 - a 3.2 S - and it has been a fantastic car. It was at the other end of the mileage/price spectrum to this one and in 4 years it's cost £1k every other year at a specialist for servicing and, some tiny bits that were needed. It's just a wonderful thing to own, it feels so special, designed from scratch as a mid engined, open top sports car with a flat 6 engine. I think they're a total bargain, and given 911 prices they will not stay this cheap forever. My daily drivers have had nearly twice the bhp the whole time I've had this car, but the feedback it gives is second to none, its an analogue driving experience that is lost in modern cars. BTW the very early 987 that were the lower tax bracket, are also said to have the same external, single-row IMS bearing that was in the last 986 and the worst of the lot. By some point early in 06 (I think, check sources!) that had become a double row IMS bearing mounted inside the engine shell and a lot more reliable. Bore scoring is as bad an issue as IMS with 987 as well, and the 2.7 engine up to 2008, and the 3.2 up to 2006, are not considered at risk for this as they had the older piston coating. Later 2.7 and the gen 1 3.4 engines both suffered this. So a 2006 987.1 with either engine is a sweet spot, and loads were sold up to the 2008 financial crisis, so grab a bargain!!
Thanks James, I think the length of your comment confirms how passionate owners are of these cars and for very good reason. I've heard so many different opinions on bore score and IMS im completely lost with what's good and what's bad, but I'm sure your comments will be appreciated by others watching this video. I've driven cars with over 500 BHP, it doesn't make them great, it takes alot to design a car that puts the driver at the centre of everything, and I feel this was achieved in this generation of Porsche Boxster. Honestly apart from the rear spoiler I love everything about this car, it's brilliant and makes being alive even better. I would love to drive a 997 cabriolet, I think they look quite good in 2024. Thanks for commenting.
@@thedrivebygg Cheers - agreed - I bought mine in late COVID times when stuck in the house all the time, just driving it relieved the monotony of WFH, and makes the world a better place like you say! Plus its a car you can enjoy at speeds that don't risk losing your license.

Thanks appreciate the comment i'm glad someone likes my videos. The effort that went into making this video was crazy, doesn't justify the return from UA-cam unfortunately. The Prices in the UK are much lower so it's hard to compare but i like that colour combination of blue and tan. They are great cars just make sure its got lots of history and receipts.
Love my 987.1S. Late 06 has the 3.4lt motor. Had it two years now. Its been faultless, and I like to drive it how it should be driven. Onto my second set of Michelin PS4s already :). Unfortunately, here in Australia, you won't get much change from Au$60,000 for a good one. Besides that, absolute driving ecstasy. To all the knockers, EAT MY DUST!
Lovely video really enjoyed it. I love my 987.2. Ok it’s not perfect but has bags of character and we really enjoy taking it out. Have a Tesla for daily use which is brilliant but not lovable. That’s the difference.
Thanks I really appreciate the feedback, I was hoping I got this video right, it took me long enough, about 10 attempts, and close to 1TB of footage all together🤣. I haven't driven the 987.2 yet, looking forward to it though in a couple of weeks. Im hoping it has more low end grunt from 3rd gear when cruising. Following the 987.2 video will be the 718 25th anniversary model, should be a good couple of months ahead. Thanks for commenting.
Nice video! I bought 987 Boxster last month, and yesterday I shouted driving at winding road, "What a wonderful sports car!". I think 987 exsist 3 types of year model, 2004〜06 GH-98725 gen1 2006〜07 ABA-98720 gen1.5? 2008〜 ABA-987MA120 gen2 When I was looking for 987 gen1, I noticed gen1 has much louder engine and exhaust sound, compare to gen1.5 or gen2. So, it's why I chose "gen1" Boxster!
Certainly brave to buy a 170k mile car, good for you. As a Lotus Elise owner, I laughed briefly when you said "this car really isn't about top speed, it's about agility" and at that very moment the video cut to an advert for a Lotus. 🤣 Anyway, I have considered getting a Boxster as a stable mate for my Elise and a car that I might actually allow my wife to drive - glad to hear that high mileage Boxsters are out there without too many gremlins.
Thanks appreciate the comment. Basil the boxster does have a few gremlins, but nothing that stops me driving him. I wouldn’t recommend what I have done, buying cheap with high mileage, but at least you know it’s possible if you really want to. I would suggest spending £10k, full history, documentation to support major jobs, and make sure front subframe in good order. If you buy the right boxster they are normally very reliable, but things will brake that need replacing.
