Started collecting US coins because I live there... Shifted to Germany because my family was predominantly from there before we moved to the US in the 1700's. Ended up focusing on paper currency from Eastern Africa and Central/South America in recent years. It's always shifting for me, I never put down a collecting niche, but I often shift focus every few years. Gotta keep it interesting!

Collecting German coins, particularly anything before WWI, can be challenging, to say the least, with every separate kingdom, principality and even town or bishopric issuing their own. Later paper currency is also fascinating. Most collectors have heard about the post-WWI inflationary period bills (about 1923) with crazy denominations in the billions of marks, but some of my favorite are the colorful small denomination bills issued just before that, during and just after WWI, issued by localities, usually worth less than a mark--similar to the "fractional currency" once issued in the USA in the 19th Century in denominations like 3, 5, 10, 15, 25 or 50 cents. But the German stuff is often colorful and beautiful and filled with folklore, poetry and charming illustrations.

It's also amazing he's so generous with his time with you. I collected both coins and basketball cards. Only 2 sets of my hundreds of sets of cards did better than the coins over the 20 or so years after. Fleer 1988 1987. They had a subset that were stickers. All my friends would ruin those and stick them to whatever thing they thought would be funny that day. I started telling them I'd buy all the good ones like the Jordans and such. I had almost 50 of the Jordans. And I found my old card collection a few years back. I was so stoked when I looked up those sticker sets . It was like winning the lottery. I was way surprised at how easily I sold them all and how high the prices were at the time. I guess people buy a bunch and send them to be graded. I guess if you get a perfect ten grade they are worth a mint

I enjoy these videos immensely. They combine the rare qualities of being entertaining, informative, and well edited. However, I feel compelled to respond to the video beginning at the 31:00 minute mark approximately. I am both a numismatist AND a beekeeper in equal measure. Of course, the bees THEMSELVES don't feel the "sting" of inflation but, beekeepers DO. Like all others, beekeepers have seen a dramatic increase in the cost of their inputs as well as the costs of production. Lumber used to build the boxes which hive our bees has gone through the roof. A portion of every beekeeper's apiary must be replaced every year (more or less due to environmental degradation, et al). Similarly, the cost of sucrose (sugar) and other feeding supplements have seen a sharp increase. This additional feeding is necessary to prevent our bees from sickness and starving in times of dearth. Bees also must be treated for a really nasty, destructive, and persistent pest known as the Varroa Destructor Mite. The treatments utilized to control the mites have skyrocketed in price. Most honey is supplied by one of the many larger beekeeping operations which requires the hives being transported several times per year to the areas where the bees are able to locate the best nectar sources. This requires the beekeeper hiring a trucker and rig, paying for the associated fuel costs, and of course the labor in loading and unloading the boxes. Harvesting honey necessitates lifting 100+ pound boxes of honey, removing the frames, uncapping and spinning the honey. This process requires yet more labor, the increased costs of electricity, and specialized (and expensive) equipment. Further, it is becoming harder and harder to locate our hives in areas that are relatively "safe" for our precious bees. Pesticides and the loss of floral sources have hit the bees hard. Landowners are often forced to charge the beekeepers more because THEIR costs have risen too. In the final analysis, it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and money to bring honey to your table.

I have a complete dansco 7070 for example and it took many years to complete it… I also have always enjoyed raw coins mostly… I am a MS collector and not a fan of proofs…however, in the last two years I started collecting certified coins and I think my next collection will be a full type set but graded.

I am a fairly new collector. My goal is a balance between types of coins and numistmatics so the silver value and gold value are about the same. Mixed with stuff I enjoy holding and thinking about the history. It is becoming more difficult to find silver and gold within my budget. American Silver Eagles are great, but the premiums are too high at times. Good luck with your stack.

Pick a few types of Silver and a few types of Gold Coins.
Some rare and some common, over time you'll notice one or two of your selection selling cheaper than usual this is the time to buy.
As time goes on, slow down on the ones that didn't do so well and buy more coins that did better.
Secondly ensure you have a high number of Silver coins that have done well, this will give you options and more potential sales in the future,
The art of buying coins is learning how to sell them first.

I visit my local estate auctions and pick up coins whenever I can. Beware, that auctioneers have no idea what they're selling. I have found loads of counterfeit Morgans and Trade Dollars. Always bring a scale and calipers to any inspection. Just because an auctioneer claims something is a Trade Dollar, doesn't mean it's not a Chinese fake.

Hello Mr. SpegTacular! (Notice I remembered to capitalize the "T") I have a question for you to ask Coin Guy.
Question: If a guy walks into your shop to sell you a gold coin, what do you do to make sure that it isn't counterfeit?
Do you weigh it, measure it, put it on a machine that analyzes the metal? Or do you have a secret HOT list of all the counterfeit coins that are currently "out there?"
I think all of your followers would want to learn the ways that Coin Guy uses right there in his shop.

I just bought $10k silver bars, cash from an LCS in Tampa and they guy who sold it to me, never asked my name. That's the way I like it. The 4$ premium sucks but it is what it is.

Australian coins have the Queen on them from when she first became the Queen up until the present constantly updating her image with age.

Hey Spegtacular. I really enjoy the CoinGuy videos. Would you clarify which coins can be sold without ID? Does this include American Eagles? Also, is this state dependent? Thanks man!

I just started stacking a few months ago. And have so much to learn still. Stumbled on this channel and would like to ask if pocket pinger can detect silver plated copper coins? I have read that copper can mimic silver in some ways, and also has a ringing sound when pinged.

Where can I get a lacquered case/folder like the one Coin Guy brings out at 4:33? I can't find it on the googler.

I wouldn't say I'm a collector of foreign coins, but I have a lot of post-WWII German and Austrian coins just because the designs on them are so intricate, especially the Austrian ones. Maybe next time Coin Guy can show some Austrian coins to see what I'm talking about.
