Mario Machi was my 6th grade school teacher he wrote The emperor's hostages. The Machi's have quite a history there in shelter cove. Mario survived the batan March and was an amazing storyteller. The Lost Coast is truly some of the last wild coastline along California.

There's no doubt you'll get up that sand dune with the right amount of momentum! At first, I felt so bad "sending it", but the sand was soft and it actually wasn't too bad.
Wow, that was quite the adventure! The Lost Coast looked amazing! My kids were actually down in that area with their mom during the last week of July and loved it. I love hitting dunes...playing in a vast roadless area is fun, but I think that little underlying sense of danger is part of the appeal as well, haha. I approve of the fashion statement at 25:58 :-)
Oh really!!! Well we were there July 30 to August 1st. I wonder if we ever crossed paths. I know how Lucy and Colin look from your videos, but didn’t see anyone that resembled them. I was so close to Oregon! I really wanted to cross over state lines and visit, but time didn’t allow. One day I’ll crossover into Oregon via automobile for my first time.
Love the video, always wanted go there. But heard bad things about it during weekends. Did you go on a weekend or weekdays? I saw a lot reviews saying it's very crowded and noisy during weekend.
We went there on a weekend. The camping area is a big open place, so there wasn't that much privacy, but there are other camping spots in the woods. I'm from Southern California, I'm use to sunny beaches. The Northern California coast seems to be a very foggy place. I wouldn't have great expectations, but if the weather is just right, this place could be a treat! I really enjoyed the hike.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Ha, Just went there anyway yesterday, Surprisingly there wasn't a lot people, and it was quiet at night after a group of people did some fireworks at around 11pm. Sound of the waves just covered all other noises. However, it was extremely windy from midnight to around 5am but I was fine sleeping in car and my friends had a rough night in tent. Our canopy flew around 500 feet away😂.

Driving on Usal Beach isn't allowed and you guys are lucky there wasn't a ranger - sorry if it's nitpicky but every instance of abuse gives the CA coastal commission even more ammunition to close the beaches to all driving. We've been struggling with them and Oceano dunes for a while. Honestly kind of a shame what's going on up there with the kooks. Incredibly disrespectful of the environment and of fellow campers to have loud music and shoot off fireworks. The only places you can drive on the beach in CA are Pismo, crescent city dunes, eel river, and Chadburne gulch if anyone is wondering :D all great places
We actually stayed on trail except for the recovery of the Tacoma. Choosing to recover a stuck vehicle, that shouldn’t have been in that area, was the lesser of two evils. Quite honestly, the trail was not marked (at least, not noticeably) prohibiting driving on the beach. Not unless someone took down the signs. If there’s a sign for no fireworks, there should be a sign for “no driving on the beach”. Glad we didn’t make any offenses though. I personally just use Gaia GPS to help me stay on trail. They're always cars out on the beach and I've never been issued or seen anyone issued a citation. To add further we had a rescue situation that required Cal Fire to come down, once all the authorities arrived including the California Park service who talked to me because I was the one who called it in. There were no citations issued or even warnings. There were several cars out there. Enough with the scare tactics

Usal has been notorious for attracting those with bad behavior and you guys behaved wonderfully in the vid - if everyone acted like you guys they wouldn't have had to be so draconian with the rules in the first place. Hey man, did you ever have issues with the rotors? I got my car in May and my steering wheel shakes when I apply the brake at speeds higher than 45 and apparently it’s a very common issue with passports. I took it to the dealership and the guy said this is normal so I wanna know if I should make them replace it or I’m gonna have the same issue when the replace it anyway. Thanks
Hey. It’s the future calling. Just a heads up: the Bunker boards don’t work as well as MaxxTrax on ice/snow. The tough thing about Usal is several sites still show it as okay to drive on, making it basically the only beach in NorCal you can drive/camp on, so it’s always super packed with… ‘the Pismo crowd’ who stand out like a sore thumb and ruin the tranquility. I really like beach camping but save the parties for the dunes. Meh.
The Sinkyone Wilderness rules; “ Driving on the beach is not allowed, and citations will be issued. Usal Beach is not an OHV park. Street legal vehicles are allowed on designated and maintained roads.” Please keep this in mind to help preserve this area, thank you.

Hello.. Jon. I was watching TFL and they were talking about you and overlanding and how good your Honda Passport is off-road. They made one-mistake... they don't know about it's electrically torque control rear diff (like a locking diff...). They claim other AWD vehicles may be better... I don't think so. I think you would be great as one of their guest and can educate how good Honda's i-VTM4 is off road combined with the 9 or 10speed trans 1st gear. They might be non-believers until you show them.

The rangers block the road with a pickup and hand out a ticket to everyone on the beach with a vehicle. CCC would love to shut down beach driving on the rest of the coast, too. Please don't help them close more. To add to Errhka's list of where it is permitted to drive on the beach in California, the south spit of Humboldt Bay and a short stretch adjacent to the OHV park on the north spit near Samoa are allowed. With the exception of the OHV park, stay off the dunes.

People shot a mortar that exploded directly above our camp site, and the Rave Party that was going on until 4AM that was deep in the forest had the music so loud that it reverberated throughout the beach. I've wanted to see the Redwood forest since I was a kid.
I remember just a few years ago (pre-pandemic) it was rare to see other vehicles or campers on that beach. Hopefully they continue to keep it clean.

I’ll go down to 15 PSI in deep sand. It really depends on tire size. Larger tires that have more sidewall could drop to lower PSI.
