  • Watch me walk you through making a ceramic hanging planter that also has a drainage catch. A simple tutorial for all skill levels.
This video was originally made for Clay King’s “Tutorial Tuesday’s” on Instagram in September of 2019. Since it was originally for an Instagram TV upload, the orientation is in portrait mode instead of landscape (longways up and down), so it may be a little wonky on UA-cam. I tried to edit it to fit everyone’s screen ok, so we’ll see. If it ends up looking tiny, well...I tried! Hopefully you can still get something helpful from it. A lot of the techniques are the same as in my first video, but this one is much shorter. Feel free to ask any questions! The clay used is Laguna’s BMix 5.

Thank you!! I JUST finally upgraded to the new iPhone 13 pro max, which takes fantastic video (the biggest reason I upgraded), and plan on making more asap! I had no room on my old phone to take more than a few minutes of video, but now I have TONS of space, so more will be coming. 🙂

Wow! I love this tutorial! I'm subscribing 4 sure!
Is there any possibility you could trace the outline of that big clay thumper you made? Or even give us some basic dimensions? I'm really into making my own tools and I gotta make this one!
Thanks for sharing. I look forward to more great tutorials soon!

Thanks!! I can measure it at some point today and get back to ya. The shape can be whatever you want though, really. Just based on your own preference and needs. Unfortunately I made this in grad school where I had access to a wood shop and could use the banding saw to cut the shape, and an electric grinder to round it out. Sadly I don’t have these tools at home. ☹️ I bet with a really sharp pocket knife and some sand paper, and a lot of patience, I could whittle one though! Haha! I’ll have to give it a try some day because I do want to make a “make your own tools” video at some point.

@@loriphillipsceramics I wish someone would make that darn tool. My clay studio has one similar. She doesn't know where she got it and I have looked all over for one but cannot find. Attn: etsy woodshed makers!!!!

Now that I think of it, I do know a potter named Troy Bungart who makes/sells tools he makes himself. He is on Etsy and Instagram and should come right up if you search his name. He may be able to make a tool like this for ya if you shoot him a message. 🙂

@@loriphillipsceramics hi Lori! I'd love the dimensions on your tool since I have a few power tools I could attempt to duplicate it. I don't have a band saw... yet... lol. I could cut out the rough shape with a cutoff wheel or a jig saw. Then I could sand it with my sanding jig I recently made. I'd love to duplicate such a useful tool!
It would definitely add value to your channel to make a how to tool making video. This long handled thumper has many highly anticipated uses. Maybe asking around your neighborhood you might find someone with a woodshop in their garage? I use the Nextdoor App to ask around my neighborhood for random stuff I need...
Looking forward to seeing the dimensions! Thanks Lori!
