I almost wish I hadn't seen the comparison between the tubes and the pan set. The tube colors are so much more vibrant. The pan colors almost seem dull. Will have to look into another botanical set I guess. Thanks for this comprehensive review. It is much appreciated!
@hberbac838 hello. You are very much welcome. It always appears that tube colors are more saturated than the pan colors since they're instantly activated and in liquid form. You i think achieve the same by pre-wetting or spraying the pans prior use. 😊
This is my favorite Paul Rubin set! I do agree with you about the Venetian red, but I do like the peach light as an alternative to opera. I wouldn’t rely on it heavily, but it is a wonderful color.… I’ve looked online and this set is no longer available anywhere which is really sad because I got it because it had tubes and not pans, so I could do refills in my pallette… Wonderful review as usual Alan!

Hope you are doing well and that you will be posting videos regularly again. 😀 I really like Paul Rubens watercolors. I have the set with 24 halfpans and I am super happy with it, the quality for the price is amazing. I was also planning on buying this tube set, but just before I got around to it it sold out and it's been unavailable since. All the other Paul Rubens products are still available here, but the tube artist's watercolors have been unavailable for such a long time, probably 8 or 9 months already, so I doubt that they are even coming back. 😕 I will probably end up buying the 48 pan set as an alternative.

I also like my flower set very much, I just think it's a pity that a few colours are not really light fast, including magenta and violet with only 2 crosses. The rose is at least a good substitute for magenta as the primary colour. I think the set is put together quite well for me, there are some 24-color sets that have more colours that are also composed of different pigments and also do not contain my preferred base colours that I use as primary colours. I would still exchange the cobalt blue for something else, it is too similar to ultramarine for me, cobalt blue always looks like a greenish ultramarine to me. In my own homemade set, I also have a greenish ultramarine inside, because it's just a cheap pigment and I have enough space at the moment. If other shades of blue are added later, it may be that I take it out. Not only that, but I only have to add very little to the set for myself, e.g. a yellowish earth tone like natural sienna. By the way, hookers green is my absolute favourite green, a very intense and dark PG17.
I couldn't agree less! Yeah, i forgot not suggesting a yellowish earth for this set! 😅 at the back of my mind, i was saying this set has too many blues for a floral set.. 😊

I just noticed that you haven't tried Daler Rowney watercolours yet. Maybe it would be interesting for you to take a look at it, because it is also a traditional brand from England.
It's a very good selection of colors for florals. They would not want opaque earth tones. Opera is extremely popular with floral artists as well so I give them credit for finding something with better lightfastness than opera even if it's not LF1. Paul Rubens Artist is a very good paint, just under the "big boys" in watercolor brands... and you can't beat the price of the sets at least in the US. I purchased the 48 pan set for about $60 in one of the nicest tins I've seen from any brand. If they could get individual tube/pan distribution they would be a real contender, that is the only downfall for me, I cannot purchase colors to refill without buying an entire box.
Yes, i definitely agree. These are i think the most affordable artist grade paints, so making solo colors available will make it even more appreciated. Recently I see sellers of solo pans here in the Philippines but I'm not sure if the distribution has reached western countries and the US.

Hii. That is a very valid and underrated question there. 🤔 hmmm. In my opinion and so far based on my experience, lightfastness of the paints really depend on the pigment chosen, how they're processed, quality and type of binder/media and at some point, at how thickly they're applied on surface.. while the type and quality of paper may not affect the lightfastness of the paint, it may affect however the overall appearance of the artwork in the long run if the paper is of low quality,.. say for example it's acidic, or if the paper gets molds etc. I think, this is the reason why many artists suggest to prioritize highest quality paper over prime watercolor paints..

I just bought this set and they changed the colors a little bit there isn't Cobalt blue, Cyprus burned umber, umber and olive green instead there is Ultramarine Violet PV15, Burned Sienna PBr7, one Black something PBr11 and another brown that I can't remember

I believe winsor newton China can be more reliable as it states the pigment codes it uses. With that, we have a clue if colors will fade in time or not.. but in all honesty, the colors and texture of Superior is better. Just don't use these 2 brands for professional outputs or for paintings to be displayed as these are not tested to be lightfast.
Maybe i can show longer cuts of the painting process next time. But cant put the entire duration as it'll make the review video reach 1hr or more. Thanks for the suggestion. 🙏
Isn't this the same paint as meiliang, etc. It's all manufactured by lightwish manufacturers isn't it? So why would anyone pay more for the same thing they could pay less for? How does this paint differ from their other paint lines?
Yes, they're made by the same company.. but i feel that these are done with better quality and presented with more data for professionals such as lightfastness ratings and pigment codes. These are 8ml tubes and can roughly make 3x the amount of the 'pan' size of Meiliang. So that should also be considered.

Paul Rubens in Deep Blue tubes are the artist grade. They have student grade called caroline something.. and tube color is sky blue. Shinhan has 3 levels. Top grade/Artist grade is the "PWC" or "SWC". Their mid range is called "Professional" and their student is called Shami.
Yes. There is. This is a floral set to be specific. Sadly, according to one of Paul Rubens' suppliers, this floral set is now discontinued. So if you find stock of this online, get it. It might be one of the last remaining stocks. 😊

Low quality paper will also turn yellow or brown over time, which would affect the color.

Hmmm. Maybe they omitted one expensive blue (cobalt) on exchange of a violet that will be 'more useful ' for florals.. interesting.
