  • Thirty years ago, Oldham Athletic were founding members of the Premier League, and they pulled off one of the league's all time great escapes in the division's inaugural season in order to avoid relegation.
Now, Oldham are the lowest ranked team in the entire Football League / EFL, threatened with losing their league status for the first time in 115 years, and perhaps even their very existence.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at Oldham's decline, the ownership of Abdallah Lemsagam, and why the Latics must be among the worst run teams in world football.

When people moan about their clubs, just remember, that Oldham have not had any promotions since the early 90's. The fans who are too young to have seen that last promotion, will have only seen two relegations and zero promotions in the last 25 years. That's proper rough. Think about it, most traditional football league clubs have had at least say 4 promotions during that time. Some serious loyalty to still be an Oldham fan and to stick with it. Respect to them all 👍

      Spot on.
I know no team has a divine right to be successful but with no promotion since 1991 and no top half finish since 2009, they have every right to moan and complain about the club. I would hope no one says otherwise because that is such a depressing record. All other football leagues have had their moments over the last 30 years, so why shouldnt they?

I remember watching Oldham in the 1994 FA Cup Semi Final. Seconds away from beating Man Utd in their prime at Wembley, then Hughes equalises. Oldham didn't win a single league game after that, and they never recovered. Very sad to see. You could argue the moment Oldham died was when Hughes' volley hit the net.

So sad to hear how this is happening at so many historic clubs, surprised the EFL doesn't have more powers to bail teams out.
Also, a "What is going on in Turkey video" would be super interesting. Fenerbache and Besiktas are 1 and 2 points off of third respectively, but Fenerbache is a whopping 20 points behind Trabzonspor, a club which hasn't won the league in over a decade, while Konyaspor has a 10 point lead over third.
Galatasary is seriously threatened by relegation, and the everything just looks wrong right now.

There are numerous players who don't want to hang up the cleats but cannot manage top or even second flight football. The wealthier clubs could even give fans to their games free admission to a Conference or League One game. It just seems wrong for people not to have a local team.

Wrexham have now spent 14 years in the National League, Stockport County dropped out of the league in 2011 and even spent 6 years in regional football, both now look to be on their way back but needed significant investment to turn things round, there's still Grimsby, Notts County, Chesterfield, Torquay, Southend and Halifax battling it out down there, while in the National league North you've got Chester, Darlington, York and Hereford struggling to even make it to the National League. Oldham are in for a massive shock, their crowds will hold up but even now they wouldn't be in the top 5 non league attandances, the overheads at a club like Oldham will be crippling. Seems clear there's a systematic issue in the UK where historic clubs are being run into the dirt by owners with no real love for the game or that are even fraudsters - maybe it shouldn't be so easy to buy and/or retain ownership of a football club. With situations like this the FA should have the power to force owners to sell up, allowing situations like this to carry on for year brings the English game into disrepute. Some kind of process or funding that would make it easier for fans to take over ownership of their club would help fix the system too

In theory, you're right, in practice, these people are so non-interventionist, they only see people with huge sums of money and don't do a more intensive background check. If they did that, you would hope that they could fish out potential fraudsters. It's never going to be a perfect system but you would at least hope for some semblance of integrity from the officials. Saying that, you look who's running the country and you start to think, well bollocks to tradition, send me the paycheque! English football is rotten to the core and if it keeps this up, swathes of locales will be left with either nothing or trying to resurrect phoenices over and over again. Bury is the worst, there was an offer on the table that would keep the club alive, but it was refused by Dale, who felt he could make more money from the club he had bought for a pound. The EFL should have the final say in selling a club if it goes into administration, and owners loans to a club should be a forced right off if the club is insolvent.
Bury had 1 million pounds owing in wages, 4 million in tax, 2.4 to other creditors, a 3.6 million mortgage on the ground and 10.7 million owing to Dale and his daughters partner. The tax and Other creditors had been negotiated to 25% payable, 75% written off, the mortgage debt didn't need to be paid off when the club changed hands So if Dales debt had been written off 2.5 million quid would have saved the club. C&N were willing to pay more than that, but weren't willing to go as high as the 7.5 m Dale insisted on.

Macclesfield, Bury, Oldham, Wigan, Bolton, it's a roll call of pretty much every town in the area - why is there so many like this in this area? Yeah, there are plenty of clubs elsewhere that are struggling hard, but it seems that outside of the very richest (Man United and Man City) and the very poorest (low level non-League), every club in the region is absolutely shagged.

Financial problems and liquidation have always been a part of football but the new English football landscape has ensured that MONEY is the only way to get to the top and is making clubs overspend or gamble too much financially just to get promotions.

Oldham was the first-ever football team I watched live in a stadium as a result I've already had a soft spot for them. I think they have been one of the unluckiest clubs going, have achieved next to nothing since they were relegated from the Premier League. Hopefully, the current Owner sells and a new one can get them back on track next season. Can't see them avoiding relegation this season even with the Miracle One that is in charge

I think there are rules that would prevent City or United intervening in financial matters, but yes, they could make it all go away. That wouldn't be fair on all the other clubs fighting for life though. It seems strange that it's gone this bad since FFP began though. Clubs have to speculate sometimes. It's like throwing overboard with rocks tied to the club, and then telling it to swim.

Great content as always. May I suggest you look into danish club Esbjerg fB? They came in third in the danish top tier only three years ago, yet this season they were relegated to third tier. That happened upon a season of six different managers, one of which were accused of physically punishing his players during training. All of this because new owners took over the club, without any idea of how to run a club in the danish league. Very interesting case of modern football gone really sour really fast, albeit not the most interesting of leagues. This phenomenon is a cancer to the sport we love so much, and I just want to shine a light on all the worst cases. Cautionary tales all of these stories.

Our owner owns the stadium we play in (leaving fans convinced he wants to just sell the land), sells our best players every transfer window and the attendances have dwindled to the lowest I've seen them in my lifetime. Used to be one of the most financially stable clubs in the lower leagues of England, now look destined for non-league obscurity for a very long time with great debt.

I know I share the same view as most of our fans, we don’t expect Premier League football. Most would be happy with bottom half Championship at best. All we want is a well run club that looks after it’s staff, giving youth players a platform to further their careers and a bit of excitement here and there.
What has gone on in the last 5/6 years has been disgraceful. Heart and soul ripped from the club.
IF we do manage to stay up, attention must return to sale of the club.
