Not so many people know but 3 Turkish immigrants, Arif Mardin and the Ertegün Brothers have shaped (black) music forever and made so many legends we know today who they are. They helped find their sound, their image and give them a platform with (including but not limited to) Atlantic Records.
he started as studio manager (had grsduated from Berkeley College of Music) and worked under Tommy Dowd - next thing he's being asked to write strings - then strings to Dusty Springfields Dusty in Memphis and produced the Rascals "Good Lovin" - and the rest is all AMAZING American contemporary music history!!
I had the pleasure of working a few times with this man & loved working with this genius every minute that I was in his company; and yes, he did indeed have 'the greatest ears in town' Arif was like none other in the business he was the greatest.
I think of everyone he's worked with he had a pure deep passionate love for Chaka. He did all of her stuff in the 80's and really put her back on the map!
@Miss Myasia This comment wasn't for a debate about Chaka's success. I am one of Chaka's biggest fans and the youngest fan that have travelled the entire country to see her probably more than anybody outside of one other person. I say all of that to say no one can "school" me on Chaka and her career. Chaka has even stated out of her own mouth that had Arif not been with her through the 80's she would not be who she is today. I Feel For You album was the crossover song for her that gave her the commercial success as a solo artist. That was my point of saying "back on the map". Prior to that she was obviously known for her work with Rufus. So, if you were stuck on me saying "back on the map" let me correct it to "kept her on the map" if that helps you to feel better. I didn't ask for a lecture.
As a kid, every album I liked (and mind you, this was by DIFFERENT artists), HE produced. And the productions were always, warm, yet intricate...smooth....and FUNKY! He was the ONE, y'all.

I knew - I've always thought it was an amazing story -
I worked for this man. He was a Giant, and was as humble and anybody I've met. I miss him. a GREAT doc
He had the ability to take average and turn it into extraordinary. He heard what was and got creative people to be clearer. The results were magic.
INDEED! Well said. I was honored to work for him and call him my teacher and friend. He brought out the best in the artist!
How did he come to do the work he became famous for?

So his main skill was knowing how to arrange music to achieve a mood.
