Dan: This show is written in a way where it doesn't drag out those feeling of despair for the viewer. When you get to an episode that makes you feel that way you need to push on to the next episode because it will bring you back. When you stop after an emotional episode you are left with that feeling until you watch the next one... so don't drag it out over weeks, get into the next one ASAP. Look at how great you felt about 7x2... The Well, with Carol at the Kingdom. If you didn't get on with it you would have dwelt in the horror of 7x1. The writers know what they are doing and what we will be feeling... trust that.
The Walking Dead is my favorite show of all time and that’s definitely how I show people the series when I’m having them watch it with me. I use that same strategy.
I've seen people state (and I agree) that Rick doesn't just contact Negan to tell him about Carl's death. He is in a bad place, most likely blames himself partially for Carl, and wants to lash out at someone, so he calls enemy number one, knowing Negan (unlike anyone from Rick's side) will put some blame on him, giving him the opportunity to direct his anger towards him instead. Simon, I see him as a slightly, but just slightly smarter and barely more controlled, scheming version of Shane. Now all he can do is hoping Negan never feels the need to call on the garbage people until he can shift the blame on someone else.
I do feel Negans apology was genuine his facial reaction said a lot he looked actually upset. I can’t blame Rick for not wanting to listen to Carl and make peace he’s probably in an extremely dark place right now, he’s like completely dissociating right now, it hasn’t entirely set in yet that carls dead.
The bikers were off orders for sure when they attacked Daryl, Abraham and Sasha. Neagan has a logical strategy and plans to meet his goals but his men keep disobeying. Then everything turns bad to worse.
Dan, you absolutely get it. That's the frustrating part about casual viewers for me, they forget INTENT. They forget that part of what makes stories work is if they make you feel things, on a genuine level. If you wanted to stop after this, by all means, but that's the point. It's supposed to be harsh and unflinching, that's what makes is compelling. People complain when certain movies and shows don't take risks and do the unexpected, but they get upset when they actually challenge the audience. It's the challenge of all storytellers I suppose. Say what you will about Carl's death, but I think it was handled perfectly.
Yeah my love for the show has never been gone completely, but losing Carl caused a loss of love that has never been fully recovered. It felt so wrong & it always felt Carl was the main character long term & he was witnessing the hardships of the group & leaders, the ups & downs etc. and would become the best leader of them all but they snuffed that out seemingly for no good reason 😭

I like how, at the start of the episode, you don't even want to continue watching the show and by the end you are anxious to see what happens next.

This episode definitely has lots of things that help push the story forward. Hope it brought a bit of the mystery spark back!
