Dear Mike, thanks for the video. Just revived my Casio databank after 25 years with new battery, but the AC shortcut did the trick!
Hi Mike. Since i am going to start my new watch repair hobby I wanted you to know I am no longer afraid of these digital watches now. Yippee!
I recently repaired a Casio databank like that but in silver, without the speaker. It's the DB-510 model, it is an amazing feeling resurrecting an old piece of technology, giving it the chance to be used again
The game is great. It's also in the Casio MG-880 calculator. I think it's Number Invaders or something. You have to match the approaching numbers with the number before the 3 hyphons and press enter to 'kill' the approaching numbers. Hard to explain, used to love playing it when I was young in the 80s.
Me too, I had one of those calcs in school.
The most interesting video I ve seen this week! Thank you so much for an exciting content! 👍🙂
Hi Mike
Normally I use to put electronic circuit boards with leaky battery acid in vinegar, to neutralize the acid before I begin the cleansing/restauration of the device ( radio, remote-control etc.).
Regards Henrik
I recently watched My Mate Vince do it on his channel for a different item . Sprayed white vinegar over it.
Will try it next time. I think the ipa does a good job along with the ultrasonic
@@MyRetroWatches you are probably right, but I have had some bad experiences with circuit boards, where the acid gets under the solder mask and continues to eat the cobber traces.
Yup the point is to neutralize it in places you can't see it alcohol probably only dilutes it
Enjoyed that, I love working on old quartz lcd's I have just brought a early 80's Orient quartz back to life it had corrosion on the traces but now works fine. fiddly work but very satisfying when they fire back into life. Cheers Retro
Thank you for making these Videos, i like casio watches because they are very durable...at least more than others...
Nice dive into the 80’s. I had a friend with a similar calculator watch in 82. It was all metal if memory serves. I appreciate your side steps into non mechanical watches and your taking the challenge to get it working. Very interesting and good advice too. I have an old battery watch that I should take the battery out of!!
Cheers,
G.
Great video Mike, love to watch any videos where 80's digital or lcd watches are being brought back to life. I Look forward to any future digital greatness.
Definitely not a fail. Very nice video and it's always nice to see something be brought back to life. Good job.
Well done, congrats Mike. I enjoyed every minute. You really stuck with it, far more than I would have been able to do. These module watches were quite a treat.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome as Always... Really enjoyed this one .Thank you
That pressed plastic is referred to as heat staking in the plastics industry. I use to have a partner that was an engineer and his specialty was injection molding. I learned a lot about the plastics industry and their terminology. I am about halfway through the video but I have faith that you will fix at least one of them
Well done Mike 👏👏 thoroughly enjoyable video .. great work .. restored a Casio WV-M200 yesterday myself brings so much satisfaction when they light up 😃 .. keep up the good work 👍
Amazing! I had no idea these could be fixed!
Thank you for doing this. I've managed to repair the forward/backward buttons not working because of your help, so it's been much appreciated.
Your welcome
Great casio watches Mike I remember as a kid using the phone dialer wach on any land line place it over the receiver it would send a dialing sound of the numbers stored in the watch then your phone call was automatically made and I I have the other watch CA 86 this one I think it has a numbers game in it
Great video Mike, I love your enthusiasm and resilience. I'm tempted to try some of these digital watches myself.
Thank you.
Go for it!
I am amazed and impressed with the outcome you got, great work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Persistence pays off. Great wins on both watches. Interesting and very educational video as usual,. Thanks Mike! Cheers!
Great video much enjoyed it thanks!
Hi Mike have followed for last 2 years imagian my surprise when you can have a chat with a Northumbrian nurse knowing how you are doing. talk about watches and the nurse is going to go through the same but still looks after you total support for the nhs
Massive CONGRATULATIONS !
I had F-14 and AQ-8W repair recently. AQ started but second hand keeps falling off ,F-14 case exploded in pieces while opening.
I had similar satisfaction when it started :D
It's very nice to see something can be still operational and not thrown away like smart watches/bands now...
What text you will input in scroll? I have "Hello, nice party!"
All best!
Bravo Mike, and thanks for the vid!
My pleasure!
Loved this vid. Please do more on didgital watches. I know all vintage watches matter but there is just something about getting an old didgital watch working again. As always I will be looking forward to your next vid 👍
Very very interesting. Thank you.
As always you've delivered a great informative and entertaining video Thank you !!!!! keep Cracking on !!!!!!
Pleased you enjoyed this. It’s proving to be not popular this video so back onto the mechanicals next
Great video, really enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Have a calc watch in a job lot I bought, should be here soon. Keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍
Interesting video, they turned out well (so far). I still like digitals, I wear them now and then in my random watch rotation.
Great job Mike. I enjoyed this in full. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, not been a popular video this one sadly.
@@MyRetroWatches that's all right, it will be later on a bit. 👍
I enjoyed watching that Mike, it's really good to do quartz done a few myself not LCD though, expanding skills, cheers Mike. Dave UK
Love digital repair and your failures also! By the way, I did not know we could be the IC board in the alcool for ultrasonic, I thought it would damage them... wow, you prove me that it is not the case. Thanks
Thanks. I found out you could to this to boards by just trying it once and it working so I have done it ever since.
Well done
Although they're not perfect, it's a nice trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing
1:24...I saw the tiny spring in the pot of parts you put to one side on the data bank watch....
Yes I only found that this morning in the pot with the leaky batteries! All a bit late 😂
I had a very similar Casio watch with a number pad. But the number buttons were rubber. They lived for quite a long time, but the buttons just wore out, probably on the sleeves, and it became problematic to press them.
The problem with the missing segment is most likely related to the contact strips of the conductive rubber on the indicator. It is necessary to carefully check the cleanliness of the surface again, it is possible to shift or turn over the rubber strip.
Thanks . It’s not the zebra strips or the contacts . They are spotless. Ive had this in the past and it’s just errors in the chip probably wire bonds lifting.
you can try to unwind the leftover wire on the coil by one revolution that should give you enough length, and then use high temp soldering tip and gently touch it in flux bath with a bit of solder on the tip and it will solder the very end, alternatively you can scrape the enamel with a blade and then solder it. I would instead look for similar item that has small speaker like earphones etc you might be in luck finding the right size :) good luck, the wire is called enameled wire, or mod wire in listings.
don't forget to short AC after LCD replacements
The phone diallers still work even now - certainly with landlines - I have a few of these. The only thing that lets it down is the lack of water resistance. It mat be worth a go to attempt a fix on the wire with some thermal paste, but still a fiddly job never the less. If you're at a loose end for ideas. One of the main problems with old Seikos is the balance wheel. Once the watch is all serviced - it still runs like a dog, So just how to change, set up and repair the balance wheel/hairspring
Great job. Do you have a video fixing the speaker? I have a Melody 30 and the speaker went dead. I found some micro speakers at Amazon, but 2 mm bigger than the case space.
Unwind the broken segment of coil to get more length of wire. Lean the ends with acetone. Then reassemble speaker. That should due it.
I hope you can appreciate the advancement in your skill level. You have really accumulated some abilities in this hobby that are not easy to achieve without the benefit of an apprenticeship program. Plenty to learn but, take an attaboy from time to time. Well deserved. 👍
Thank you for this compliment
what a great video...I have a casio dbc-32 data bank and there is a spring that I don't know where it belongs it fell out...😀 any clues?
Michael Reflective backing plate had a slight Film of IPA on it, You witnessed the instant evaporation !!!!!!!
It was really bizarre and I swear I’d not put any alcohol near it
I have just managed to get a ca901 back running again but I can’t seem to get the buttons to work . Any tips or ideas what to check
Hey! Nice video !! Would you know how I could fix my EL on my Casio? Thx
Very good job. Have you links or informations about Casio like straps? Having many old Casio marlins needing new straps....
I buy all my stuff from Cousins Uk www.cousinsuk.com/category/rubber-casio-styles
At 11:05 Your fingers are in the way! Have you considered doing the repair hands free via Bluetooth. 😇
haha! now theres an idea!
Might sound silly, but maybe put a piece of polarizing film in front of the display and make sure there's absolutely nothing. Just as a troubleshooting method.
Hey man, I have a Diesel DZ7130. It saved my life back in 2014; I was on vacations, scaling on a ladder through a narrow rock. I lost my balance at the top and hit my wrist against the rock. The watch took the hit and I could steady myself and not fall 8 meters down, and probably hit my head midway. The screen cracked a little but the watch kept working up until this year, when it burned out. Took it to a local jeweller/watch repair and the technician told me the internal circuitry is rusted, and there’s no way of refurbishing it because it’s a digital screen and those are difficult to deal with.
I don’t think anyone around is able to even find spare parts for it. I really like this watch. Could you provide a light for me?
Sadly not really. Digital modules are usually specific to the watch they are in. I would say there is a good chance if you set up a saved search on eBay eventually something would be listed for you to pick up a running version.
@@MyRetroWatches I see… I found out there’s an online official repair platform for Diesel watches, but it’s only supported in certain countries. I’ll keep trying though. Your input was very helpful! Thank you.
Hi, the ca 86 was not properly assembled that's why the segment is missing, also the battery holder is damaged. Other thing, the module was not properly installed, that's why the numbers 1 and 2 do not work. Needs a little more of work and patience and will work 100%
Trust me I’ve had this apart more times than I care to mention off camera now and it’s nothing to do with zebra strips . I’ve cleaned them , swapped them , re cleaned the board. Board only goes on one way so it can’t possibly be installed incorrectly?
I’ve had other digis like this where segments have failed. I have a friend who repairs digitals for a living and he says it’s probably in the chip. Wire bonds can come unattached.
I’d love to get it going given all it is is segments but looks like at least two are out and I can’t seem to find any more ways to test to solve
Pretty sure I saw you leave the little spring missing from the Databank in the pot containing the leaking batteries at the start of the video
good spot.
Great job. Shame about the segment! The game on the calc a nice bit of gaming watch history :)
Thanks, Im still annoyed both do not work as they should. Trying to source a speaker for the databank!
On the other hand, just went to the recycle shop and bought an "oozoo" watch, quartz,,, because I like the dial, got a battery and a NATO strap for it...NATO was too short :( they usually are too short...they make those for Hobbits??? And looked up that watch, turned out to be a 50€ watch...found a lady's watch for again 2€ or was it 4€, because it is still running, that one was still running, and had a okay strap, red fake leather.... that one was a "Q&Q" , quartz, looked it up it's a 30€ watch, my daughter and wife don't want/need it... But still, next time I'm browsing through those shops, looking for binoculars and astronomy books.. I'll have a look in the watches basket again :)
Can anyone help me with the manual how to set the time and date. With the help of your video and 3h I really managed to get my new flea market CA-50 (which is similar to the CA-86 that you repaired in the video) working.. thanks in advance!
P.S.: Got it. It's the module 134, manual can be found online. Time is set by typing in 4 digits and date the same "menu" but in 6 digits "yymmdd". Crazy complicated and not self explaining but now everything is going smoothly. Year has to be shifted in the years before 2000 though. I live in 1995 now 😅
Sorry I dont know. becuase mine does not work right I have not tried to work out how to set but I am sure its not that complicated but it will involve using the calculator to type in the time correctly.
I like to think of it as delayed success. Not only that, but you've got the world's first 26 hour watch!
haha
This casio is named Casio DBA800 phone dialer seiko made the same which James bond wear but its just a Casio
Can anyone tell me where i can get hard case for King G-Shock gx-56
Wish I still had those, threw them all away probably... or broke them..
Hi. Did your Zenith episode eventuate?
It’s coming. I’ve so far filmed the disassembly and now just cleaning the parts ready for assembly.
Cheers. I thought I might have missed it.
Why did you store the pieces of the watch and the battery inside that plastic container. It looks like the batteries leaked on everything and you could have kept them out of the container. Maybe I’m missing something.
That’s how they came to me. I said at the beginning that I had forgotten about these and found them when I was moving stuff about.
My friend sent them to me like that. I had just put them to one side which ended up being 3 years
Watching the video now, but restoring old Casios is a bit hit and miss. I have a few that have parts from 2 or 3 donors (case, module and bezel/strap)
I know you don't take on work unless it's something you want to work on but I'm looking for some help getting my dads seiko navigator working again.
Sorry I no longer have the time to work on other peoples watches. It also kind of ruins the hobby for me.
@@MyRetroWatches I know you had told me that in the past but I just wanted to ask if you knew someone who would or if you could help with some information as to finding parts.
A would have been swearing but they are usuable so a would say it's definitely a win
I was annoyed that I could not get the speaker going but I am determined to replace or fix that now.

Can a digital watch be repaired if pixels seem to not be showing up?
Possibly. it would depend on what has failed. Could be a capcitor or just dirt on the zebra contacts or on the board. I have had screeend fail completely and there is nothing you can do.
The boiling point of alcohol is.... 78 °C (173 °F), so that's not it...
:)
Get it to show real time, and not am/pm...
Makes even worse
