lol Mattresses actually work really well. Back in high school my buddy played the drums in some band, and he would practice in a room on the 2nd story of his house. Every time we didn't put mattresses over the windows and doors the neighbors would call the cops. It made a HUGE difference.

I was on a really tight budget. So I built a vocal booth out of PVC pipe and moving blankets. I then filled it with foam. It gets hot. But it really was a great solution on a small budget. Made a huge difference.
I want to do the same thing, how did you use the foam? Did you fill the insides of the pvc so its not hollow? I want to try making a small one as a test to see if it works. I've heard moving blankets stacked on top of eachother works great and they're really cheap

Thank you for the videos! I've been learning a lot! I want to reduce low-frequency noise coming through existing walls. I was considering adding a layer of MLV and sheetrock. Then I noticed the gap between the sheetrock and floor. While the gap is needed for possible expansion, I assume it allows noise to leak under the walls. Is there any value to adding MLV to baseboards as well? If I decide to add a layer of sheetrock, I'll be replacing the baseboards anyway. Thank you!
Was testing today because i noticed echos when i clapped my hands. Used the large cushion from my garden bench, and it already got rid of 90%. Now to find a more proper solution lol

Hi, I have a question, is it possible to have the absorption in the room to be enough to weaken the sound wave travelling out of the room so the other room will hear significant lesser sound? Like putting up a wall of acoustic panels?

I need to soundproof a bedroom From sound AND vibration from road noise (cracks in the busy road and a gap in the retaining wall vibrate the house) I rent so I cannot get into the wall. Thanks for the video. I have a new renovation with painted drywall and vinyl flooring. I’m looking for something to reduce the echo down my hallway and in my bedroom. I’ve seen some polyurethane hexagonal panels on Etsy. What is your opinion of these for reducing the echo?

I've seen rock-wool used as acoustic paneling that I do believe does help sound-proof. Custom made with wood framing ofc but it does seem to work.
If the acoustic paneling is freestanding from the wall, yes it works absolutely. I built a timber framed wall just in front of the old single width masonry dividing wall in one room, while a different room I kept the original situation. My housemate never even hears a peep from the neighbors, while his room is next to their living room. At the same time I can literally hear them flip a light switch or type on a keyboard... I'm not sure about the economics of the material, but if you have some rock-wool lying around you may just as well put it to good use!

Soundproofing walls is a matter of putting a textured surface on the problem wall. You should seal it as well, so no gaps along the skirting, etc. It won't do much but it's on your side.
When we plasterboarded homes (sheetrock) the wood partitions walls around the toilets had rockwool type insulation within. That was the only thing that stopped your gf hearing your dad fart! ;-)

Two off my wall behind the drywall is Made of masonry Blocks and the other two are metal studs. Some people suggest MASS LOADED VINYL , Others 2 pieces of 5/8” drywall with green glue in between and others Resilient Channel with 2 pieces of 5/8” Drywall ( green glue in between)! Which of those is going to have the best STC RATING FOR LEST PRICE AND WHAT IS THE BEST CAN MONEY BUY ( 2 questions in one ) ? Thank you for the answer .

I have used eggcartons, in layers of 4 stacked (little bit of air between layers), and thick curtains around the room, eggcartons strategicaly, curtains all the way. And, it actually sounds a lot better to me, and dampens the sound to the next room (kids room) by a signicant amount. It does not help my neighbour 100 meters away much though (subs go down to 11hz).
I buy the cartons cheap at a farmer store, 30 bucks for 300 ish pieces. 30x30 cm aprox. I'm planing to build another layer of drywall the coming summer, to help my neighbour a bit.
Would you say that drywall+greenglue is efective, or is greenglue a vaste of money? So many different opinions on this 🤷♂️
Thanks for the great advice and invitation to write to you. I live in the UK in a 200yr old terraced / row stone wall house. A nearby road has become very noisy, as has an ajoining neighbour. It's the low pitched traffic noise that is the worst ..lots of self-centred guys (it never seems to be women) have changed their car and motorbike exhausts so they roar and pop like racing cars etc.
The problem with adding any form of cladding or extra material to the walls is that the walls have no damp course and need to be able to 'breathe' or they become damp and can cause conditions for mould and fungus to grow. You seem to be knowledgeable and have wide experience about these things, so I welcome any suggestions...?
It's simple, put a much louder exhaust on your car and go make noise by those that are irritating you, they'll get the picture.
Im in the phase of building a home theater and i honestly want to do something off color even if ot dosen't work so due to the fact my walls have holes everywhere already im going to use the rat poison spray foam against your advice since i have a lot, i do however respect your advice! but i will also be painting the wall with liquid flex seal and putting 2 inch thick aurelux foam over the flex seal after it fully cures! Will i get good results?... well idk but i hope it at least sounds a tick better! Please if anyone thinks they know what my results will be PLEASE feel free to be honest!
I've been in a sound proofed studio. They filled the stud walls and door with sand. It seemed to work really well.
best way to reduce sound is through mass, fine grain sand is as good as it gets really, except maybe just straight up brick walls.
What's better between, Scare and Round space to keep the sound inside ?
Well I mean 2-3dB is still very significant considering how the scale works (for those who don’t know decibels work on a logarithmic scale, every 3db is cutting the volume in half basically)

Egg crates work for small places if you cover the 5 walls plus carpet on ground. We had a jam studio for the band like that
Hi for budget reasons I was thinking of using 5/8 drywall with green glue between the original drywall. I would then use a window insert for the window. could this work for someone on a budget?

I heard paintings or blank canvasses. And thick rugs or thick wall tapestries. I once saw an entire small room walls covered in thick rugs, like Persian rugs. Would love to hear if any of that really works.
carpets work, except they're expensive per foot for wall coverings and heavy so you need something that can bear its weight.
What do you think about making acoustic panels with cellulose insulation batts for acoustic treatment?
We have a furnace / HVAC room that share a wall with a bedroom. So is it better to soundproof the wall from the side of the bedroom? Or add absorption or noise deadening material in the HVAC room?

egg crates don't absorb anything of consequence, but they can help to diffuse high frequency reflections.
That being said: they suck even at diffusing because of their uniform shape.
I’m trying to build a vocal booth in a poorly insulated garage. My main mission is to make it absorb the outside sounds (sirens, helicopters, and passing traffic) and contain all sound inside the booth. I’m going to build the booth itself out of lumber but I need to figure out how to layer my absorption and proofing to make it happen.
Btw the current booth is made of mattresses, other than outside noises it deadens the space a lot.
I can relate with outside noise. Building an acoustic booth requires various materials. It depends if you're working with 2x4 or 2x6.

Will carpet squares on the walls help with sound proofing? Or will it help with sound conditioning? Or none?
Great video, I live in a small condo. The hallways and staircase are covered in a thin carpet. No underlay and it’s very noisy. What would you recommend to put underneath the carpet that’s cost affective?
There are rubber underlay that works very well. Mass Loaded Vinyl also works well in deadening that footstep echo you’d be hearing on such floors.

Dark paint in theory should have an affect on sound level, just not one you would ever be able to distinguish with the human ear, you may not even be able to detect it with a meter unless you've got some expensive toys. The darker the paint the more pigments it has, the more pigments it has the more mass it has.
But... It should (in theory) have an affect.

It won’t really be that effective since you’ll need to cover the entirety of the wall and not leave any gaps.

Would you include saarpor soundproof liner as being useless? It is advertised to mitigate high frequency sound and doubles as an actual insulating/anti damp liner hence why i am considering it even if it does turn out to be useless. But ive not used it before so dont know if theyre just lying about that or not.
Ok so I install epdm roofing which is .045 rubber. I'm thinking of gluing that to 1/2 inch celotex fiber board that is also glued to the walls. Then after that building a room within that room using the drywall with the acustic block layer sandwiched between 2 dry wall layers. Any experience or thoughts on epdm ?

They do little at blocking noise from outside. It will help by a bit but it does a better job at absorbing sounds from within the room.
What would you recommend for soundproofing a ceiling to prevent high frequency noise (think vacuums, tools) from transferring through the air to neighbors above? Or do you think that’s even necessary? Would 1/2” dense carpet padding on the ceiling help in any way, too?
Instead of coating the ceiling with MLV and laying a drywall layer, and stopping short of reframing the room for a room within a room idea, what methods would work best to block the high frequencies from transferring to the neighbors above (in addition to of course covering vents and using your advice on the doors and windows :p). I have about 15 spare moving blankets, three long blackout curtain panels readily available and have added carpet temporarily to the floors as a start.
(This is in a rental property)

Another layer of 5/8" sheetrock.. Also use "green glue" between the sheetock layers.

Everything I've read states that each layer of soundproof paint adds about 2-4 DB of sound reduction. If I have to paint the walls anyway, 6-12db of sound reduction doesn't hurt if the alternative is zero.
If I'm gonna run mass loaded vinyl, additional layers of drywall with green glue, and buy acoutic panels... might as well "whole ass" the project and get that 6-12 db when painting my walls.
A second layer of 5/8 drywall with STC 62 rated floor Underlayment sandwiched between them. I don't know how effective it will be however it only adds $140 to the cost of the drywall alone (for my 400 square feet of wall). In theory with it's impact and transmission sound blocking values in addition to reducing vibration while decoupling the layers of drywall i hope it will do well. Thoughts or comments?
If you have 2x6 walls, 2” of closed cell on the outer wall serves as a vapor barrier and closer to air tight, you can then come back with the remaining 3.5” of open cell that is slightly better than the unfaced fiberglass insulation per the engineers up in north Texas that tested different insulation STC values. But you will need a separate second wall with the pink stuff unfaced insulation. Double layer 5/8” Sheetrock with green glue or mlf on inner wall and same weight per square foot exterior like 5/8” minimum OSB and Hardy board siding or brick etc… double 5/8” Sheetrock is a little over 10# per square foot. They do make 3/4” tong and groove OSB typically used in flooring then you could use the Hardy panels 4’x8’x 1/4” thick like for soffit as the exterior. But at least match pound for pound on your interior and exterior or more on exterior.
We live in a 2 story and the 2nd bathroom is above the kitchen, which is not a good thing. We are looking at MLV for soundproofing the floor but are hearing different feedback about it.
We understand that MLV will only reduce the air carried sounds like a tv or someone speaking, not anything like steps or dropping something on the floor.
We plan on putting MLV below the subfloor, then tile.
We also plan on putting new Vinyl in the upstairs bedrooms without removing the subfloor. Question - can we put MLV under the Vinyl?

I have a bedroom I’m trying to sound proof because I hear EVERYTHING from my room. I saw these foam decorative bricked panels , what do you think about those? Would they be effective enough or is it just marketing ?
Those are more for sound deadening the inside of the room and unfortunately won’t do much to soundproof a wall.

there's a video on utube comparing sound when there's a spray foam or not. 5-6 inches of spray foam reduce the sound by 20db. and it's tested with a device. so idk if it's completely useless.
You just saved me a whole lot of wasted effort and money. I wanted to keep outside noise out of my office. I guess noise-canceling headphones or white noise is the way to go.

My new home by Taylor wimpey is really bad for sound issues 😕 I can hear neighbors yawn, so I got soundproof boards over the dry wall on shared wall, but the sound seems to travel through the ceiling now and down the cavities of the walls that are not shared 😑😑😑 what should I dooooo 😭

Will Rockwool Safe and Sound do a good job of sound proofing?
It certainly will do a better job than your standard pink insulation. Couple that with 2 layers of drywall and you should be happy with the results!
Can I use mdf screwed to a internal wall to block sound?
If sound is absorbed - converted to heat - such as in a panel, how can it not also reduce sound? That is, why is it 100% ineffective as soundproofing?
I have a small closet I wanted to turn into a recording booth and I used styrofoam insulation boards on 2 sides of the wall that I wanted to soundproof. I haven’t seen a difference but what are your thoughts? Is this useless? Should I do another layer to get good results?
Styrofoam insulation won’t really work that well on their own, especially for a small closet. If you install 5/8” drywall on top of the insulation you should notice a bigger difference. Also, don’t forget to seal the electrical box. The holes on them and the gap around the box will let a lot of noise in and out of the closet. Hope this helps!

Yes, remove your hearing aid batteries.
I believe referring to spray foam as Cellulose is a major mistake. Cellulose insulation can achieve great STC ratings and as the name says it's made of cellulose fibers that can be sprayed...but do not confuse with foam.
I can't find soundproof wallpaper anywhere but I noticed that craft board has some kind of thickness and it is a bit spongy, would that help?

Also, I'm going to try rolls of foam flooring and Wooden plank flooring protector.

Hi, I would like some advice from you. I live in 5 apartments building. Have no money or space to reconstruct walls. My neighbors say that my familiy is loud but we are wery careful abot that. Even talking with my husband in heated dabate( not yelling) . What would be your adivce, to soundproof two rooms even a liitle bit in some reasonable price, the rooms are 20m2 and we share two walls. I wouldn’t worry about it if you’re on the ground floor. A drumming mat should be good to absorb the vibrations from spreading around the room and going through the wall.

Both. It does a great job in blocking sound and the rubber compound it's made from is a good sound absorber as well.

In soviet countries they used to put carpets against the wall because the walls were so thin that you could hear your neighbors, or so I've heard

It did nothing to the temperature, and nothing to the sounds in and out of the room.
Paint is paint, unless you change it's content.

All I really need to is sound coming out of my room, I used to drink a lot at weekends with friends till very late since I used to be alone in the weekends.
I get quite loud in the weekends because of it, when I wasn't home alone at weekends any more, people complain that I was loud.
I simply looking for a cheap way to make sure no sound go out of my room when I am drinking at weekends.
No one talks properly about it, they say it doesn't soundproof, but they aren't talking about it in detail.
Like doesn't it soundproof at all? it only doesn't soundproof from one side? like that's what I've been trying to look for hours and hours now, but no one gives the answers I am looking for.
Try not drinking.. that shit just wastes time and money while fucking up your liver and making you do dumb shit.. i had to quit myself.. was up to a damn 12 pack a day of some natural ice.. and i would drive where i was going no problem.. it just got to the point of i always felt like shit, even when i drank.. so i just started smoking more weed..

I need to stop the sound from reaching the neighbors as cheap as possible how do i go about this??? i was thinking of just putting a load of duvets on the wall? help from anyone that knows would be greatly appreciated!

the dark walls would changed the temperature of the room which would in turn affect the speed of sound... which in turn *might* allow for that +/-0.020Hz differential of that *one* low double 8th note bass hit that occurs once very four bars that causes your mum to come downstairs and nag "You're making that one creaky floor board make a funny vibration sound! Turn it down" which in turn would be your only evidence or source of awareness that there was indeed a difference between dark and light walls and the soundproofing qualities that they do now momma has proven do have...
But then again, if you knew about that type of shit to understand the time of day would also contribute to this potential warming/cooling causation of floorboard creaking phenomena - I doubt you'd be inclined to settle your soundproofing efforts at simply turning the lights off.
That said... vs "sound absorption", it could be abstractly argued closing your eyes makes the music sound different....
