    A friend and I were watching the Orange Bowl (American college football) years ago, featuring 2 teams we didn't like. It was one of the worst games I've ever seen. At one point, I remember my friend saying, "This game is such a spectacle of ineptitude, they should declare it a loss for both teams and toss the trophy into the Gulf of Mexico."
    That is how I felt about this story. Immensely entertaining and informative, thank you!

    The saddest thing for me was watching the whole situation create a rift between Gary's sons, Luke and Ernie.

    • @Shakeshift
      @Shakeshift Рік тому

      Because Luke is hardworking, and Ernie is lazy, thoughtless, and lives in denial about reality and what happened with the game.
      Luke is a worthy successor, whereas Ernie is a family embarrassment who really shouldn't ever show his face in gaming ever again. Ernie partnered with a man who attacked his brother Luke by emailing Luke's wife suggesting infidelity, trying to get Luke's military pension revoked, and tried to take out Luke's convention which had been going on for almost sixteen years.
      Ernie Gygax willingly threw in with him, knowing that he was trying to attack his brother. To me, that is spineless and disgusting. Ernie is a shitty human being.

    Brand recognition and nostalgia can get you really far in today's market and there are fans who miss the old TSR era so a revival of 2E would have been hyped as hell.

During that section we watched the movie "Black Robe". This is a practice done all over the world through out history to assimilate other groups by the genocide of the male bloodline and erasing their history, It's happened in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, etc. The problem is he didn't give that kind of context so it made it sound like something only Native American practiced EDIT: remembered the movie we watched

    Hi. I enjoy watching your podcasts!
    I was with TSR1 for 5 years and tangentially involved with TSR2 (God, you *do* need a program to tell the players!) and would like to offer a small clarification.
    Top Secret is the 1980 game from TSR1, designed by Merle Rasmussen and edited by me. To his credit (at least for this part of the story), when Jayson Elliot (TSR2 aka Solarian) decided to produce a new game with the Top Secret trademark, he got Merle again as lead designer, myself as lead editor, and we and others as part of the design team. Over two years of discussion, development, and playtesting, TSR2 came out with Top Secret: New World Order, which had entirely different game mechanics and content and is enjoying pretty decent success with fans. TSR2 at least understood that claiming a trademark didn't mean you owned any Intellectual Property associated with it.
    Thanks,
    Allen Hammack

    That pull quote from the new Star Frontiers reminds me of an old televised debate on racial differences that aired on the CBC, here in Canada back in the 80s, that we discussed in college. In our college discussion we talked about how the racist lost the debate, miserably , and then blamed his loss on the racially superior intellect of the other party. Not his real words, but to apply an apt WoTC style disclaimer, his actual words were just as wrong then as they are today, and of yes he double down on a live TV broadcast and made himself both irrelevant and a loser at the same time with his most brilliant bit of multitasking. I see the various "new" TSRs the same way and am always amazed they cannot figure out the simple trick of shutting up before they dig a deeper hole for themselves.

    Goddamn, that was an awesome video. 1st: Grits are like porridge but it is made from a puffy white corn called hominy. They used to use lye, the active ingredient in drain cleaners, to prepare the hominy and they still might. Grits can be served with butter, jelly, syrup, sugar, cream, crumbled bacon, cheese and shrimp (prawns). Living in the Mid-Atlantic/East Coast of the US offers me the option of having them if I want to, but never having to have them if I do not.

    • @havokmusicinc

    Wow ... Just Wow. That is a lot of truly abhorrent behavior and craziness.
    On a more positive note, for those who don't know, grits are one of the best things about Southeastern US food culture. It is a savory porridge very similar to polenta. The main difference is that polenta is made from corn meal while grits are made from ground hominy corn. Hominy corn is corn that has been treated with an alkaline solution to cause the nixtamalization reaction - a tradition going back to pre-columbian times which makes the nutrition more available and changes the flavor profile slightly. At its most basic it is usually served for breakfast with butter, salt, and pepper. It is very good with cheese mixed in and can also serve as a good base for shrimp or grillades (a stewed meat and gravy dish, pronounced gree-ahds).
    I have no idea why someone would waste perfectly good grits by wrestling in them. That is most definitely not a normal part of Southern food culture.

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB Рік тому

      Why would they? Remember, TSR was a fucking dumpster fire when Wizards bought them, and my understanding was that dumping the name was a measure of goodwill towards the hobby. @@Dakarn A great many people, especially if they played across multiple editions or saw the unending treadmill of worse and worse content, were aware of what was happening with the company. It was coup after coup and weird design choices affecting products, such that anyone playing for any length of time would have at least been aware of what was going on. But even if you didn't, Wizards did, and the TSR name was cancer. The company was 90s Marvel levels of dead when Wizards came along and bought it up. And when 3rd edition came out, they did a lot to distance themselves from anything TSR had done. Maintaining the name would have been cute, but even just from this video, you should be able to get a picture as to why Wizards chose not to.

    To be honest, it seems like the people at the new TSR had sime serious mental issues, the way the blew up on people, the constant defense, the conspiracies and straight up lies all seem like whoever was doing this needs alot of help.
    Personally its clear that this company should be taken out, its revenue says it all, however i still f**kin hate WOTC for all their shenanigan bullshit the last 20 years as well. Popularity isn't an indication of quality, lol. And yes, WotC has been on my badside since the mid to late 2000's when it dawned on my what a grift their whole business model was, MtG and D&D both. Glad everyone else is waking up to it as well. I appreciate them for getting me in the hobby, because 3rd ed was my first (1 session of 2e doesn't count imho, lol) but that is as far as it goes. Not bought a single thing from them since the supplement about the weapons that grew with the characters... can't remember the name atm, but that was the last one I picked up, lol

      Nah, this isn't mental issues, it's just some assholes getting in way over their head and then getting put on blast by the internet.
      As to WotC... It's a mixed bag. On the one hand, their are times where they do incredibly creative stuff and I honestly feel like 5e is the best the game has ever been with how it keeps classes relatively balanced and provides players a lot of freedom with character development between backgrounds, classes, powers, feats and races. On the other hand, WotC has also been driving up the price of the modules to the point where I can't justify spending money on them (In my native canada modules have gone from around $60 to 90 with apparently another price hike in the works), the relative quality of those modules has largely collapsed (Spelljammer's only redeeming feature was it's monster manual since it's the only thing I can that feels like a completed product) and races have been made actively more bland so as to not offend anyone (I could probably swap the descriptions of half the races in Mord's and they'd be about as meaningful because that's how generic they've been made) and also re-termed as "species (because that is somehow less othering then race).

    About the WotC content statement that shows up on older books on places like DMsGuild: a lot of people seem to think the statement being placed on stuff they like is calling them racist/sexist/whatever for liking it or having written it. However, what the statement actually is is a blanket statement WotC puts on *all* the content they released before a certain date. It also appears on 3e, 3.5e, and early 5e content [at least up to the first season or two of adventurers' league iirc] on DMsGuild as well. If you look at enough older TSR/WotC content, this becomes apparent, as it's on both modules with things some would find genuinely offensive but also on deeply benign dungeon crawls. All it really seems to mean is "this was published before we realized we should be using sensitivity readers, so caveat lector."

Cream of wheat is to avoided at all costs, grits on t'other hand is finely ground cornmeal cooked up like a porridge rather than into pone or hush puppies. Then I heard the name "Star Frontiers" and just said "Oh no." Then all the other stuff happened and I shook it off, assuming I must have mixed up my space games... until chapter 5. I assumed that WAS the scandal, not that it was the cherry on top of the giant sundae of litigations.
    I'm most fascinated by the repeated mentions of "Chad's Revenge" in the enemy list. I can't find anyone by that name involved in all this, but they seemed to be insanely paranoid that their company was full of revenge spies. Always a healthy work environment.
