I doubt this will be seen, but Matt, I was an Army EOD technician. I can provide some insight (this is before watching the other vid). The suit and helmet look to be last gen - EOD8 . They have been updated a bit with the EOD9 which costs about $80k if memory serves (been out 2 years). That battery pack is primarily for running the fans (which you desperately need to keep your profuse sweating from fogging the visor. We typically don’t take comms down to an IED as the Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) can set it off. The primary purpose of the suit is to protect against blast over pressure, with shrapnel being secondary. Everything is supposed to be very tight so a blast wave can’t propagate in the suit and liquify you. After you are safe from that, then you worry about frag. That black plate can stop a lot, and the Kevlar can as well, though I’m not sure about bullets. Any questions feel free to PM me. Edit: Also the Hurt Locker is BS.

The main damage of a bomb comes from the blast: shock wave + heat wave, differential in air pressure ... that's why there is so much padding and only kevlar, no hard steel or ceramics. Absorption / dampening of the initial shock being the main goal. The shrapnel is only really effective against human tissue / clothing. The plate armor up front and face shield are there for the shrapnel.
The suit can protect from lower impact shrapnel. It’s not meant to protect from direct bomb blast. It is designed to protect from the pressure of the blast tho. Typically the concussion of the blast is what will kill them not the shrapnel. My cousin is E.O.D. and 90% of the time he never wore his suit when going in to disarm or check if there’s a bomb. He said if it’s going to explode he rather go quick then suffer.

It could maybe protect from shrapnel if you make the choice to run at the last second and are far enough away for it to slow down. But if youre holding a bomb or are right next to it, your chances of catching it in your body are raised. But they're definitely not designed with a person shooting at the wearer in mind. So a claymore or something else that shoots smaller objects out with more force become more of a risk than just a pure blast.

You're not walking away from a bomb blast in your face for sure but at least your chances of ending up in ICU is better

The SRS 5 is a suit designed for searching, it allows more mobility by sacrificing protection (less weight). DoD and Civilian bomb techs use the EOD series of suits, the most current being the EOD 10. The EOD series of suits provide maximum protection to the user and has a much thicker visor.
What EOD does, is train to not have their face or front pointed towards the blast, and to tuck and cover. Shrapnel moves quickly but is significantly slower than a bullet. Most of the pads on the helmets are to prevent EOD guys from getting concussed by the overpressure of the blast, and not to absorb but to deflect shrapnel. The visor is either made from UHMWPE, Acrylic, or from Polycarbonate (PC) all of which of which are strong and impact resistant.

With the amount of resources you are able to put into this testing, I think it would be awesome if you could incorporate some ballistic gel so we can see how effective anything that ever slips through could still be. Keep up the great work!
