The Blue Nile. If you know, you know. Paul is a bit of Glasgow icon. A well kent face around the West End of the city and renowned for the generous and humble way he interacts with his many fans. Your tale of your message board link up is typical of him. A really lovely guy who along with PJ and Robert gave us an amazing musical legacy.

Saw them live in Manchester (UK) in 1990 - a gig that the BBC recorded. Grown men were in tears.

You should check out his solo album "Mid Air" is the . Saw him perform a few tracks at Celtic connections in the Glasgow Concert Hall a few weeks ago, 2 Blue Nile tracks, a brand new song and the title track of Mid Air. Never thought I'de get to see him live again, it was a special evening. I'm sure there will be footage on utube if you fancy checking it out.
Cheers for the video, it was well done.

This video made my day, seriously. Seeing someone else talk about this album as passionately as I am about it made me at least feel like I'm not alone with the idea that I truly think this is one of the best albums ever created. So instead of me writing a full paragraph about why I love this album to someone, I'll just send them this video from now on... 😄

I'm 71. I first heard Hats from a friend who had brought it along for our road trip from Iowa to Arizona back in 1990.
Blown away. The perfect road trip soundtrack. Atmospheric, melancholic, effervescent. Top 10 album of all time for me. Fantastic video.👍☕
    * My personal album is "Bookends" by Simon and Garfunkel. I first heard it as a high school Sophomore and it became the first album I ever bought. It has been with me my whole life My favorite lyric of any song, from "America": "...and the moon rose over an open field.." Sehnsucht!

thank you for that :) My favourite album of all time. i had the pleasure to see them live twice, his voice is wonderful to be hold live, the records don't do him justice. "the wires are down" - how the f**k was that a B-Side.
EDIT: did you ever hear this, ua-cam.com/video/_172cffdDJU/v-deo.html such a perfect duet, I always loved the original but RLJ is a perfect addition and completes the song in ways i didn't know it needed completing

One of my favourite albums and bands! Great to hear some love for this album, it's definitely under-discussed so I hope this video contributes to some people checking it out for the first time. I especially loved to hear about Paul responding to you, he seems like such a genuine and humble person. Would love to see some more content like this or would just be curious in general to hear about some of your other favourite albums and artists since you have such impeccable tastes clearly!

This is one the best albums I’ve ever heard If not the best. I was listening to the radio a Sunday morning back in 1989 when I heard a song, I believe it was “Saturday Night”. Obviously the song was announced probably at the beginning, it took me months to find out who they were. I bought after Hats the previous album.
Also, I saw them live playing in Washington DC at Georgetown University. The only time they performed outside of Europe
Long life for The Blue Nile and Paul Buchanan

I took my family to a holiday in Glasgow (from Finland) so that I could see them live in the 00's, so yes, I've heard the album. :)

I love Blue Nile/Paul Buchanan! Hats is definitely the best album, I adore it, and don’t understand why lots of other people don’t share our love. I did, once, get to see them and it was a beautiful evening. I overheard someone in the bar claiming that their shyness and lack of live appearances was a studied attitude that they had developed for publicity. If they felt that, why were they even there? I’d give my eye teeth to see them or Paul live again. I’ve never been to Glasgow, and not likely to, but that’s about the only place that you can see him perform these days, sadly.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with we other fans. I keep finding bits and pieces on UA-cam, which is so great,as I always fear the last thing I read/heard might be the last time I do. I always wonder if outright fame would’ve suited the band (hit singles, arena shows, celebrity, etc) but maybe that’s just me trying to pull every final piece closer to myself? They say that you should never meet your heroes, but I’d love to meet Paul, however briefly, just to see if he is as pleasant, self-effacing and wonderful as he seems. Take care.

Rod Stewart covered Downtown Lights.Paul’s worked with Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics and Charlene Spiteri from Texas. There is a video on UA-cam where Paul visits the small flat where they made a walk across the Rooftops .
I used to love The River Detectives from Glasgow and The Big Dish,Love and Money and Danny Wilson from Dundee.

I met them a long, long time ago. Lovely guys, and I adore the first two albums. I pretty much agree with most of what you say here. I really recommend listening to New Brighton by It's Immaterial. Just the one song. It's very similar, partly because it was created around the same time, with Calum Malcolm also at the desk.

You might want to mentions PJ's new album ""When a good day comes" By "PJ Moore & Company" which was released in 2023. It is his only full album after leaving the band and it is personal, beautiful and sublime. It is not a Blue Nile album but is unique and wonderful in it's own right.

For what it's worth, I much prefer The Blue Nile's 3rd album "Peace At Last" which is better for the added guitars as opposed to the prevalence of the synthesised sounds of the two previous two albums and they're better songs as well. "Peace At Last" is very under-rated.
