    And that’s why it was genuine. Because that friction was there and it was real and then the chemistry grew. Classic movie for a reason. That connection resonates and is forever captured in the hearts of so many.

    Patrick knew she was uneasy around him because of their time in red dawn, but one day while they were rehearsing he told her, "I will not let anyone or anything hurt you here, I will put my body through the ringer, I would throw myself in front of a train, I will do anything and everything to keep you safe." And after that, we got the movie performances that we know and love now.

    The fact that Patrick wasn’t your typical slicker, he had this genuine moody darkness and earthy charm, that’s what made it work! Their initial adversarial relationship came across so real on screen- because it was. And with the director being a documentary man, he knew how to pick up on genuine, interesting dynamics, no acting required. All of that makes this movie so enduring in a way that transcends it’s apparent limits (having an outspoken feminist screenwriter probably helped too!)

      Yes, she is SO different than she used to be. It’s sad, someone (or many someone’s) somewhere along the way convinced her she wasn’t beautiful. When she had the money, she got “the work” done…she went from such an amazing looking woman that SO MANY of us guys had a huge crush on, to what she looks like today. Not that she’s NOT good looking, but as you say, no one recognizes her. She’s just another woman in the world - she USED to be “the Jennifer Grey”. I crushed on her so much, especially when this movie came out. Lol.

    • @kathleenwarner5183
      @kathleenwarner5183 2 роки тому +14

      I read that it wasn’t so much that they hated each other but Patrick was quite the lad on the set of RedDawn, which they’d made not very long before, playing mean pranks, constantly being late to the set and she’d already been cast as Baby and she had no interest in going through that again so she said not Patrick. He knew that he had to have her on board or he wouldn’t get the part. He apologized and said we can do this. Patrick was a trained dancer, she wasn’t and he’d get impatient with her because she was ticklish. They had no chemistry off screen but boy did they on screen and they got along a lot better. He said in one interview that he realized he was being too hard on her and was more patient.I can’t imagine anybody else playing those roles.

      The movie worked because Baby is a relatable character played to perfection and the romance was believable because of the growth of the characters. Don't disrespect the woman that gave us Baby like that. "There's no movie without Patrick" should've stopped there because there wouldn't be chemistry and this classic wouldn't have been born without Jennifer in it.
      Thirsting over Patrick Swayze is understandable, but he's not the sole reason why this movie is timeless. Case in point, in the widely panned 2017 ABC remake, Abigail Breslin, despite being a good actress, received the most backlash for not being able to be THE Baby. This was Baby's story after all. So if anybody could've played that character then why didn't that remake work and why was she particularly slammed? Colt Prattes as Johnny was also unsatisfactory but not as slandered as Breslin. Well men can get away with being mediocre more, I give you that.

      She's stated that was her biggest regret. That she wishes she had never had her nose job. She thought at the time it would make her have more jobs since she always hated her nose. Afterwards, all it did was take away her distinct look that everyone loved about her and caused her to not be cast. It really is a shame.

    Patrick made the movie work. His personality, athleticism, energy, sexiness, acting, passion, and insane dancing are the reasons the movie resonated with so many people. Always felt she was miscast, there was no chemistry. The movie also had a boatload of talent. Her nose job altered her appearance so dramatically, noone recognized her so she couldn't get acting jobs any more.
    Demi Moore showed how great acting with passion & chemistry on both sides make a big difference (Ghost).

      Well…NOT quite real there. It is her that me, and every guy I knew at the time, felt that she carried the movie. That’s what made it work so well; women loved Patrick because… well, he’s Patrick Swayze, guys loved Jennifer (she truly was so beautiful before her cosmetic surgery). They got both genders right where they needed to, and still do today! My adult kids love this movie now, and my boys thinks she’s gorgeous and my daughter thinks Swayze is too. Personally, I think they nailed it with these two, can’t imagine any other actors replacing them - which is why the sequels didn’t do well.

    You don’t have to like a person to have chemistry it’s just something that happens and cannot be explained. It’s the tension between her and Swayze and Johnny and Baby made it so realistic because it was really there. Swayze himself talked about it there were times that she drove him crazy and it was real and it made the movie believable. It’s why we all love it so much. I lost count how many times I’ve watched it from beginning to end lol when I’m not doing well I just pop in the dvd and watch it always makes me feel better:)

    Patrick is a perfectionist and remember at the time that he was irritated Jennifer wasn't prepared for scenes & didn't take the dancing seriously. It was a serious craft to him taught by his mother in her dance studio in Houston (he also played sports & worked on the ranch for his Dad ... balance).
    He didn't like having to reshoot over & over & her dancing ability was subpar with no passion. HE made their scenes & the movie work because of his dancing ability and total open passionate big Texan personality to be himself & naturally sexy, unpolished, & workaholic to perfect scenes.
    Jennifer was Joel Grey's daughter (Cabaret), very New Yorkish, and it showed. The rest of the actors in her family portrayed a suburban family quite well. The storyline & Patrick (with his blonde dance partner that would have been better suited as Baby) made it work. Now they had insane talent and chemistry in their scenes!! ♥👏😊
