The tomato (see pronunciation) is the edible, red fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant, which belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in Central and South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato originates.
Numerous varieties of tomato are widely grown in temperate climates across the world, with greenhouses allowing its production throughout the year and in cooler areas. The plants typically grow to 1-3 meters (3-10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that often sprawls over the ground and vines over other plants. It is a perennial in its native habitat, and grown as an annual in temperate climates. An average common tomato weighs approximately 100 grams (4 oz).
Its use as a food originated in Mexico, and spread throughout the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
    Derivations
The Italian word, pomodoro (from pomo d'oro "apple of gold") was borrowed into Polish, and via Russian, into several other languages. Similarly, the now rare German term Paradeisapfel, which means "apple of paradise", is still heard in the form paradeiser in the Bavarian and Austrian dialects, and was borrowed into modern Hungarian, Slovenian and Serbian. Tomato plants are dicots, and grow as a series of branching stems, with a terminal bud at the tip that does the actual growing.

i grew this two years ago, and it was not only a very heavy producer, it was a very disease resistant plant; maybe the most resistant variety I grew, and I grew 28 different verities. i loved the color. I cannot recall the taste very much, considering I grew 80 plants, 28 varieties! But I’m growing two of them this year, and can’t wait to see how it goes.

One of the absolute best tomatoes out there IMO. I always overplant this variety because of how good and versatile it is. Also tracked down and am growing the pink, red and orange variant growing this year because of how fond I am of the black version. Can't overstate how good and complex this particular heirloom is. Also, to my knowledge it comes from Russia, not exactly sure where the name comes from. Possible guess would be that the work crossing and stabilizing was done in Russia with possible genetics coming from Japan. Like I said, just a guess though.

I have a very small plot where I grow my tomatoes, and I usually can only fit three plants. What would you suggest as your top three tomatoes? I know that this one is definitely going on my list for next year.

If you want a cherry, go for Sunsugar, a dark yellow, orange color, perhaps the sweetest and best cherry of them all. If you want heirlooms, I would really encourage grafting them to Supernatural rootstock. This makes them much, much more productive in my experience. Have you grown heirlooms but only gotten a few from each plant? Try grafting.it works. Paul Robeson is a consistent taste test winner. Any hybrid, medium sized variety will generally out produce an heirloom..so if you only have room for three, it really depends on what you want to use them for. I’ve heard San Marzano Redorta is a terrific paste and sauce tomato.

They actually originated in Russia, I don't know why they were named Japanese. They are beautiful tomatoes and grow well here in Japan. I grow one plant in a raised bed that's 6'x8' and the plant will fill the whole box. I have had them grow 7' tall and produce over 100 tomatoes on a big plant like that.
