This is one of the best-known Shima-uta folk songs, celebrated by everyone in the Amami region, because students have had many opportunities to learn this song in school and other places from long time ago. The lyrics basically say, in the first part, “Are you going? Are you leaving here, forgetting about me? I don’t want to leave without you, but I must go. It is so painful to leave.” The song goes on to another part, that is a love song between a man and a woman, singing, “I was thinking about you and it kept me up; I couldn't sleep.” Several decades ago, it was talked about how this song sounds just like a Tibetan song used for sky funerals.
